off the waiting list

So I found out today that I am now accepted into Williams after being on the waiting list.
Has anyone else gotten off the list yet?
Also, I am having to chose between Williams and Vanderbilt. I've already invested so much into Vanderbilt--I've told everyone that's where I'm going, I've sent the money for the matriculation fee and this pre-orientation program, and I've gotten an e-mail address (and I'm now on thefacebook.com as a Vanderbilt student). These schools are so different, one's a more social, southern school, and one's a more intellectual, new england school. If anyone could offer advice I'd really appreciate it--I'm so confused right now!

I'm reasonably familiar with both schools. I don't think they are that different socially, other than the fact that one has more "yankees" and the other more "southerners".

All things being equal cost-wise, I would choose Williams. On average, the small size allows it to offer a high-quality academic experience -- smaller classes, more interaction with professors, etc.

Just my two cents worth.

When and how were you contacted to get off the waitlist??!! Congratulations, by the way. I am on the waitlist and I am dying to get in. Sorry I can't help you decide!

Thanks. They called my house today at around 10 when I was at school. They said that I'd receive a package in the mail in a couple days. Good luck, hopefully you'll hear soon!

kayvee--

I have a cousin at Vanderbilt who really didn't Vanderbilt at all her first year. Southern culture can be shocking and abrasive to one not used to it, and it's hard to get much more Southern than Vanderbilt.

Williams is more prestigious among top grad/law/business schools nationally. Vanderbilt's going to have an edge in the south, and will probably have slightly more street-name recognition.

Academically, I think that Williams is hands-down a better option. There are several schools and programs at Vanderbilt that may be exceptions (education possibly for one), but I've always been of the belief that picking a school based upon your prospective major is a mistake. It's not like you won't get a good education at Vanderbilt, though.

You're choice shouldn't be based on what seems easiest at this point. It should be based on which schools seems best for you. Forget the waitlist and imagine that you were deciding RD. Which school would you choose?

If you're hesitating to choose Williams only because you've already set up shop for Vanderbilt, go to Williams. In the scheme of things, your deposits, email address, and facebook profile are absolutely negligeable.

Kat!! Choose Willy for old times sake ;P

hey,
I was in a similar predicament last year....except my choice was between city (UPenn) and rural (Williams). I had also sent in my deposit, bought the T-shirts, and received housing from UPenn. I felt that I could experience a big city with grad school.

Aren't you from Austin? heheh.. I heard vanderbuilt feels lot like UTAustin. I just thought school like Williams could provide challenging, different atmosphere than ones i am used to. As far as academic expereience is considered, I think Williams is better than Vanderbuilt.

If you want to have a future of being SOCIAL go to Vandy...If you want a future of being INTELLECTUAL go to Williams...My daughter is on the waiting list at Harvard and has pretty much decided she wants a school where she is NOT a number and can seriously make a difference. Pick Willams..it is # 1 how could you not...
HB

oh la la, tu as de la chance! What'd they say in the phone call? How long do you have to decide? Is money an issue? Vanderbilt seems like a nice place to go to school, but so does Williams...you've got a tough choice.

isn't it weird only one person on here has been accepted off the waitlist? please for my own sanity.. let me know if you or anyone you know has gotten in... I want to see if there's any hope out there... thanks.

I called today and was told something along the lines of "We picked __ (small number) of people to admit from the waitlist and have mailed them a packet. We cannot release names over the phone just yet."

It was a very small number :( and this thread doesn't make me hopeful at all...

ahhhh this isn't offering much hope to me either. I called yesterday and got an even vaguer response--something along the lines of "decisions will be made very very very very soon". schmod, do you know if they called all the waitlist-acceptees to whom they sent the packets? As in there's still hope for some very wonderful snail mail? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of us.

no, they said they weren't going to release names...

and when I visited a few weeks back they said that they would call all waitlisted acceptees, so i'm not very hopeful at the moment...

however, they did say that the mail should get there by the end of the week, so I suppose we'll know by then. Siiigh. not lookin good.

They sent a letter, not a package (although the woman who called me said that they would send me a package).
This is what the meat of the letter said, "The return on our initial acceptances came in so strongly that we have been able to admit fewer than 20 students from the waiting list so far."
It goes on to say that I only have a week to decide because "there are other students on our list to whom we have not yet been able to respond." So to you guys who haven't heard yet, it's not over yet. You may still hear from them if most of us decide to go elsewhere (though at the moment I'm leaning toward Williams).

does anyone know if williams' waitlist is still open? or did they close it?

i haven't gotten any messages closing it, but its certainly not active. im still praying though.
