***Official 2011 Siemens Competition Thread***

an unexpected Semi.

@omgitsbenwang It’s on the competition website below the lists for Semis and Regionals.
https://www.siemens.be/cmc/apps/frmgen/index.asp?c=1516-N3S2J-en</a> .

heyy guyz do you know if mentor recommendations mattered? My mentor wrote like a 5 word sentence for each question… so i’m not sure if that could have been an issue. also can we write to them asking what went wrong?

breaker746, so do we just register and show up? are there any instructions they will be sending us?

Thanks!

^ I heard that they will send us a call sometime tomorrow to give us information etc. Our team actually has no idea where we’re going yet (disqualified from the local university due to conflict of interest stuff).

I’m on such a high right now. Congrats to all semifinalists and regional finalists!

Semifinalist!!!

Finalist!

Anyone else in region 3?

In the past, regional finalists have gotten a phone call to arrange for materials to be shipped overnight. Start thinking about your backboard!!! Also come hungry. They feed people CONSTANTLY.

The Siemens folks will not tell you why you didn’t advance. Odds are that nothing was “wrong,” but that there are 1400 applicants for very few spots. S1’s mentor letter was rather brief, but he did make his point rather clear. :)

Congrats to all who participated!

ETA: the link looks like it’s an invitation for folks (NOT the competitors) who want to see the exhibits or formal presentations.

SEMIFINALIST!!! I’m HAPPY!!!

@Newton same here. $%$#*#& didn’t get anything. One day I’ll do some really awesome science experiment…
And good job to those who won

Yeah I didn’t get anything either with an aerospace/mechanical engineering submissions. Possibly the typos in my abstract and summary.

And as far as mentor info goes, they say they just read the report first without any personal background. If your report is good then they probably read the mentor comments and personal stuff.

Anyone know for team submissions how much it matters to show how the team collaborated? I just added an appendix at the end which was like a paragraph/half a page on team collaboration really, but I couldn’t get into specifics because it says not to mention names.

How did people format their reports btw- did they follow the rubric in order? I included all the stuff there, just not in that specific order (I’ve won another STEM contest in which I followed the rubric cold and they told me that was really good, but I didn’t think it was necessary for only a 18 page report)? Just curious because I’ll be hoping for something at my local ISEF affiliated fair and I’m sure the judging processes are similar.

so anyone knows what semifinalists receive as a prize?

the best mindset to take with these competitions is definitely dgaf mode, and if you win something, its a pleasant surprise. semis :)

ditto, semis here  anyone know if the school receives a banner or something?

Thursday: Found out I got a 2390 on my SAT
Friday: Found out I was a regional finalist

in summary, it’s been a pretty good couple of days =)

Congrats to everyone who won, and to those who didn’t - don’t take it personally! You never know what will happen, and there are plenty of other things that you will or have already gained from your research experience.

I heard they send prize packs in November. Past CC threads talk about random goodies plus a big thing, like an Apple TV (what do those do?), a camera, iPod, or a digital photo frame in past years.

Does anyone know what kind of recognition semifinalists get?

As in, does Siemens contact school administrators or local press? Or as hellohelloo posed it, do we get a banner for our school?

I’ve seen banners for both semi and regional finalists in the past years at my school.

wooooooooooottttttt!!! I don’t think my school has had a semifinalist in the major STEM competitions since like 2003…I bring honor to my school!!! WOOT

When do phone calls for regional finalists happen? My team doesn’t know what region we’re in and we kind of need to in order to schedule and make plans… (Our mentor disqualifies us from our local region.)
