*Official* 2011 transfer chance!

@nujabes29

If you TAG into SD, you should be golden. It’s very, very rare for a student applying to UCSD with a TAG to not get accepted to their major, so long as it’s not impacted.

@izmeben

You’ve got a good shot at UCLA thanks to TAG, but Cal is a bit of a reach. Definitely possible, but Cal isn’t a safe bet. I don’t know a whole lot about USC, but I think you have at least a shot there.

Try and work on some ECs, and write killer essays.

My turn…

Schools: UCLA, UCI, UCSB.

Major: Geography/Environmental Studies @ UCLA, Econ or Business @ UCSB and UCI

TAG: UCSB, UCI

Pre-reqs: Completed as of Summer 2010

IGETC: COmpleted as of Summer 2010

GPA: 4.0

Non-traditional Student

Essays: Will start working on them soon, but I’ve got essays from other schools I need to work on first…

Haha, is that a joke? You’re in everywhere you’re applying. Geography-environmental studies doesn’t have a particularly high average admitted GPA. Just don’t completely screw up the essays somehow.

Also been a lurker for a long time… also been waiting for the last year to post this!

Applying to: UCB, UCLA, UCI, University of Chicago, Columbia, NYU
GPA: 4.0
Pre-reqs: Completed by Fall 10
IGETC: Completed by Spring 11
EC’s: Volunteer: Big Brother Big Sisters of America ( I have a little sister ), Deliver food to ill/low income families through the Foodbank, beach clean up. Two prospective things I’ve been working on is volunteering at the library, they’re taking forever to get back to me and an internship at a local paper. If both were to start before applications that would be nice… Work: Work 40+ hours during Spring semester as I work at a tax office and this is when tax season falls, work 20-30 hours during the rest of the semester. Come from a low income family. Dealt with several hardships, mostly family related which is why I moved out on my own when I was 18 and have supported myself fully.
Personal Statement: I have yet to write it… I’m an English major ;)

Waiting for a solid “overall” transfer thread to be started… so maybe you guys could spread the chancing over to my non-UC universities I’m applying too… I’m mostly posting this as recommendations for what I can still improve now… thanks!

CrownOfTheSea: Agreed… in everywhere you apply, but what about EC’s?

Indie: TAP? Are you a CCC student?

Honestly, you can’t do better than a 4.0, you’ve got your prereqs and IGETC, and some good ECs. Assuming you’re a CCC student you should be golden, and even if you’re not, you’re probably still good for the UCs you’re interested in.

As for the private schools you’re applying to, I don’t know much about them. But, again, you can’t do better than 4.0. If you don’t get in somewhere, it’s either because of the “coin flip” factor (simply too many highly qualified applicants), or because you missed a required course or something.

Yeah I’m a CCC. I’m in the process of doing TAG, I guess. Never really considered TAP… See this is why I did this. Not to reaffirm what I already know, but to actually get advice about what I still need to do. I will definitely look into TAP. Thanks.

Irvine is supposed to be good for English-related stuff. Also TAG into San Diego, which is the best of the UCs that offers a TAG.

TAP varies between community colleges. You might consider finding a community college that allows honors contracts–these turn any standard transferrable course into an honors course though the completion of supplemental work. This makes it much easier to complete your TAP units–you don’t need to work around when standalone honors courses are offered.

TAP won’t matter much for you, since you have a 4.0, so don’t make any big sacrifices to try and complete it. Its most useful for borderline students. If you were applying to Biz Econ or something, I’d recommend it a bit more strongly, since the average for that major is 3.9+.

CURI0US - low if you maintain that GPA, 50-50 if you knock out a 4.0 or close to this fall. BS some extracurriculars. Just do it. Talk about how you’ve applied psychology to your job or something like that
kobeftw - in everywhere or almost everywhere, solid. LA might be a bit of a reach but in everywhere else.
christian612- in everywhere
UCLAudia - 40-70% for both. chances are you’ll get into at least one of them
simplistical - in at UCI and UCD, solid shot at UCLA

nick_scheu-in at SD, good shot at LA, apply to UCB too.
KidKrasher - odds lower due to downward trend. Do well next term and explain you had some crisis you had to deal with.
Ella89 - in at lower UCs, ok shot at LA and B, probably in at least one.
la4ever09 - in everywhere/almost everywhere but LA, ok chance at LA
PerfectSky - in everywhere but LA and B. Prereqs will kill you, try to get those courses online somewhere. Can be ANYWHERE in the nation.

@Xelink

BS some EC?

O_O

i think i’ll take my chances and not…

does fall quarter GPA help my application?

i’m pretty safe for SD. if something horrible should happen i’m still good for irvine. maintaining a 3.0 isn’t hard. -_-

Hey guys, started working on my TAG for UCSD and thought I might as well throw my stats in here for review. I also wanted to mention that this forum has helped me out tremendously over the last 2 years as I tried to learn about college and transferring. Thanks!

Essays
Planning on starting them this month before fall quarter starts. Not too worried since UCSD doesn’t factor personal statements into their admissions process and that’s where I really want to go.

Personal Story
I was the guy in high school who never showed up, but did okay on tests. Barely graduated with around a 2.0 and had no idea what college was about (my dad got an A.S. from Heald and my mom never went to college, but both of them graduated from continuation high schools). A recruiter from DeVry convinced me I would do well there, but after 2 semesters I decided it wasn’t the place for me. I enrolled at De Anza for spring quarter '08 while starting a full time year-long temp. job at Google. I put work before school and ended up not completing the quarter, earning a W and 2 F’s on my transcript. Over the summer I had one of those epiphany moments where I realized I wasn’t going to make it if I didn’t focus on school and got my act together. In the fall I retook the 2 classes I got F’s in and started super remedial math (beginning algebra). For the last two years I’ve maintained a 4.0 at De Anza while finishing IGETC, 1st year Bio, and 1st year chem. This fall I’ll be starting calculus (finally! after 2 years of math) and ochem. I’ve had my heart set on UCSD for years and would probably turn down LA and Berk for it (I’m just applying to see if I could get into them). If they count my DeVry units and non-UC transferable units, however, I’ll be over the 135 unit limit for TAG’ing UCSD. I’m also worried about the Bio dept. being impacted and only accepting 200 transfers for fall 2011. My fall-back would be the Biochem major in the chemistry department. Oh, and my long-term goal is to apply to pharmacy school at UCSD once I graduate, or continue on there as a grad student if I don’t get in.

@SDhopeful

how did u land a job at google with that work ethic from hs?

@nujabes29, It was in their book-scanning department for that “digitize all the books in the world” project. We had a separate building and our badges wouldn’t allow us entry to any other building on campus; in fact if our ID came up as attempting to enter, we would be fired. Entry-level was simply identifying certain pages in the book like Table of Contents, Index, Title Page, etc. I managed to move to a special team that dealt solely with finding the copyright dates to help them avoid lawsuits. They hired from a local hiring agency that I signed up with to find a job, the only requirement was computer literacy and they hired tons of people. =)
