***OFFICIAL AP Art History 2015-2016 Thread***

I’m not taking the traditional AP Art History class, because my school doesn’t offer it— but my teacher is going to help my friend and I study for the exam. We’re using Khan Academy, but I’m worried that it won’t be enough prep, since we’re only meeting once every two weeks. Do you think I should buy the Barron’s book?

@bfc2017 I am taking an online AP Art History class and we use Khan Academy a lot. I have the Barron’s book and would suggest you getting it too. I’d study outside of your meetings too.

Compared to the old test, the redesigned one seems a lot harder. Would you recommend memorizing the required image sets?

Can someone give me an overview of this course? I’ve considered taking it for QuizBowl and other reasons, but what is the structure like? What is on the exam?

@jswani Culture. In AP Art History, you most learn about the development of culture throughout different social and geographical regions in various time eras. It’s not just memorizing art in separate art periods, you have to understand the politics, philosophy, religion, economics, and society at the time. AP Art History taught me about a lot about the Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islamic religions. I also learned about the history and culture of the Pacific Islands (polynesia, micronesia, melanesia) which receive almost no attention in any other class. It’s a very fun class, and, unlike World History where you learn the events, causes, and effects, in APAH, you get to visually see how society causes events and how events affected their ideologies. The exam covers 250 artworks from time eras and regions such as Classical Rome, Egypt, Pacific, East Asia, Middle East, Africa, Native North America, Mesoamerica, Medieval, Renaissance, Modern World, and Contemporary! Highly recommended.

Anyone got he released exam?

I am just reading through the barrons book for the new curriculum. Hopefully the MC will not be as hard for this curriculum. I am scared because we have to know more. The old format was facts, now we have to more. Hopefully the test will not be as hard as the barrons because the practice tests are very weird. Good luck to all on the art exam? Aiming for at least a 4 but I would cry for a 5.

OH MY GOSS! The multiple choice was nothing like any of the Practice Exams! I hate getting redesigned tests sooo much. I guessed on maybe, hm… I don’t know… 75 of the questions. I only felt sure about 5 of them, the easy ones like “Who painted this?/ What culture is this from?” and whatnot.

The free response was so much easier. I feel confident about all of my answers except for the last one. (which I will discuss tomorrow) I hardly studied any Contemporary artworks, so I’m hoping that my BS skills are on point. I wrote 4 or 5 paragraphs on each long response and 2 or 3 on each short response. I hope that’s enough.

I think I did alright.

so i took it just a couple of hours ago! i feel pretty good about. the mc has me a little worried but the frqs were easy for the most part! hoping for a high score

I took the exam as well! I thought the MC was alright hoping for a 60/80 and the FRQs were a blessing.

Do you guys think that the curve will be bigger or smaller?

I don’t know-it is standardized. I am hoping for a bigger curve

THE FRQs are OUT!!!

Yep  They were easy to me! Way easier than calc :frowning: I think I got a 4 on calc… The only one that was weird was the Monet question.

I think they were pretty straight forward.

For 1, I talked about Hokusai showing the relationship as more violent, both used natural features of mountains and waters and drew your eyes to the top of the work. Also Japonisme and mass printing.

For 2, I said that Chartres used glass (Lux Nova) and compositionally religious images like Notre Dame de la Belle Verriere centralized that light and led to spiritual enlightenment. Also, Chartres was a nun school at one point, and that the flying buttress and quadripartite vault made more windows possible. Cult of the Virgin, yadda yadda yadda, you get the point.

For 3. Colosseum, Imperial Roman, concrete more lightweight, practical, and Roman, vomitoria, sand pits, a hierarchy of seating, all that you know.

  1. Paris underwent urban replanning, development of Salons avant-garde, cultural center, transportation, Monet liked that, feathery brushstrokes and exterior view of train station show that, and he demonstrates 19th-century Parisian innovation through impressionism and urban excitement---dissolves form, brushstrokes.
  2. Both figural in the round all that, compositionally spiritual characteristics cross on ste foy, androgyny, and hairstyle on fang byeri, Different in that one was hollow and stationary and large, other was smaller and portable for Fang were migratory. Gold encrusted wood for Ste Foy equals reliquary.
  3. Faith Ringgold, Willa Marie Simone, fake art career, cultural appropriation, and well narrative quilting made quits art and quilts were traditionally African American women work, also women artists and social critiques in global contemporary era.

So yeah that’s my paraphrase. What do you guys think? Am I 5 worthy?

@silverhawk5 It depends how you did on the MC

@KG5APR I think I got like 65/80 at least…I got 71/80 on the practice exam I took so…

@silverhawk5 You probably got a 5 then! I aced the FRQs but was iffy on the mc…
