OFFICIAL AP Chemistry thread

Ahhh, this was a hard test. Perhaps I would have done better had I not self-studied everything. I omitted about 11 on the MC, missed a good amount, and probably didn't do so hot on the FRQ. I felt like crying after. I think I got a 3.

^^ well, if it's consolation to you...self-studying a science takes quite a lot of talent

OMG I just read that putting 4 and -1 is right! That makes my entire day!! That means I got one right! Thank you if that's right. Because I basically failed all the other FRQs. I think I got almost full credit on 6, maybe 1/4 on 5, maybe half on RXNs, maybe 3/4 on 2, and probably less than 1/2 on 1. It was a mess, I blanked so badly. I feel really bad because my teacher always has a 100% pass rate, with most getting 4/5s, and I did really well in the class.. Sigh. I think I got around 65-70 on MC if I'm EXTREMELY lucky.

Were we allowed to use pencils on the FRQs? I used pencil and I'm kinda worried because on the ap english test today only pens were allowed on the essays. Someone please tell me pencils are okay for the open ended on chem.

yes, Pencils are allowed; no need to worry.

Hey everybody!

Has anyone worked through the 2008 AP Chemistry Free Response questions after Collegeboard released the questions? If so, maybe we could work through some of the questions to see how we did.

My thoughts on the MC questions: I answered 65, and I know of 1 that I answered incorrectly -- probably due to my nervousness and/or rushing. But, I still think I did okay.

My thoughts on the FR questions:

I thought this question was pretty straightforward.

On part a, I said something like that as the hydrate is heated, the mass decreases, indicating that the waters of hydrate are coming off. I can't remember if I said that the hydrate is heated a sufficient number of times because the mass stays relatively constant towards the third heating, suggesting that all of the waters of hydrate are off. : ( Finding the formula of the hydrate was pretty straightforward. While checking my work during the no-calculator part, I realized on the last section of this question that the mass percentage I calculated was not for the original mixture. I sat up the problem and everything without my calculator, but I'm not sure if I will receive credit since I did not have a simplified, numerical answer.

I thought this question was pretty straightforward.

On the reaction between sodium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide, I predicted that the product would be Al(OH)6 with a charge or -3. Now, however, after looking back I think the product is Al(OH)4 with a charge of -1. I'm not too sure if Collegeboard will accept my answer or not. After all the charge is correct. What do you guys think. The other two reactions were pretty straightforward.

During the test, for some reason, I could not figure out the ionization equation for atomic fluorine -- so hopefully that will only be worth a point! Aditionally, I'm not too sure if my prediction and explination for whether Xenon or Fluorine has the higher first ionization energy is correct or not.

Parts c and d of this question were a little weird, but I think I said a few things that could potentially get me partial credit.

Post any comments if you would like!
Thanks!

Well, I was self-studying this, so I wasn't expecting to do well. The multiple choice was OK. I left two blank, both experimental chemistry (which I didn't know well). I'm hoping I got 65 right.

FRQs were easy, except one of the reactions, and the fourth part of question 2. I also missed part of question 5 because I didn't realize that xenon was in period five. bangs head against wall

I'm hoping for a 5.

yeah i was self-studying this as well, i really don't know what i'll get..

and lollllllll at sapience.....lmao so funny!! whats wrong with him?? :) :)

and omg thats a swatsika? just noticed..haha :p

oh darn...its been deleted...i was looking for the nazi post :p

So was I...oh well, it's up there anyway.
