OFFICIAL AP Chemistry thread

Ehh, I don't know if you can discuss the specific answer, I would suggest deleting your post just in case, I'd hate to see someone forfeit their score for something as silly as that. It's probably not a problem, but I'd do it just in case.

also it said that it smelled like banana..... esters smell like all different scents (wintergreen, pineapple, etc.). so if you didn't know the exact structure you still could have gotten it probably.

my teacher makes esters and then asks us what we think the scent is all the time. if we get it wrong she gets offended and thinks she is a bad organic chemist =(!

It's infinitely simpler just to memorize the formula. Just know carboxylic acids and know that esters are carboxylic acids with the H bonded to the O, or vice versa.

it is easy to memorize but a lot of classes dont emphasize the organic chem (it shouldn't since there are courses dedicated to the topic....) but may have been exposed to it in a lab.

I feel really dumb because we did the same lab that was on there in class....and i kept getting the wrong answer. I thought i knew how to do it then after i had done a bunch of work i realized I messed something up and I didnt have time to go back. So i kinda screwed that up. So I just figured i might get some credit and i moved on. I thought I would be able to get more points if I just went on and tried doing all the others. I am kinda nervous that doing that was a dumb mistake

We didnt even do ANY organic stuff....so ya.....

i remember my dad going "you're eating banana oil that's an ester" or something

...

Oh, it was an ester? Oh well... I can't believe I missed the smell clue...

Oh, and it is 4 ligands. The question was a special case. We got a practice sheet made by Flinn Scientific that had that exact question on it and the answer had four ligands.

Hm, your right. I just looked it up. Special case. How were we supposed to know that? You think I will still get credit for putting 6 ligands? I got a different charge than with 4 ligands of course, but I balanced that charge that I got. Sometimes for complex ions the grading rubric is like between x and y # of ligands.

^ I sure hope so! I can't believe I was fooled by CB

Yeah me too. I guaranteed missed one of the other net ionic product predictions also. This sucks.

Someone kill Sapience and throw his body in a ditch - all he's been doing is spamming for the last few pages.

I heard that the ligand one was a special case... but perhaps 6 OH is acceptable? I have no idea.

Also, watch out on discussing MC questions/answers (like the organ chem one) - aren't they getting extremely harsh on that?

putting 4 or 6 is CORRECT...you just have to make sure the charge on the complex ion is the right one, so 4 would be -1, while 6 would be -3

Yeah! I hope your correct because thats exactly how it went down on my paper. I furthermore balanced it with 3OH- reactants to balance the charges as well.

When can we start talking about the answers we got on FRQs?
Thursday?

I omitted 4 or 5 on the multiple choice...I'm praying for like a raw score of 60 lol.
I don't know. Some of the questions were ridiculously easy and some were like "***" because my teacher never really covered some of the MC questions about labs.

FRQs were so much easier than I expected them to be.
Thank Godddddddddddd there were no acid / base problems.
Part 2 was surprisingly easy as well [usually I'm really bad with conceptual stuff] but they kind of just asked about the basics, which I'm thankful for.

ban? (10char)

^Regardless of what I am, that was going too far. I'd be really be upset if a moderator didn't do something about that one. You took me too seriously.

er...i think "seriously" is an understatement, lol.

Gahh
I was this close to missing the exam. Good thing I wasn't too late, but the day started out pretty badly.

The test itself was alright, multiple choice was much easier than expected. I'm aiming for like 40-50 because I have pretty much been failing all of my practice MC tests.

The Free-Response was easy, thank god. Finished everything with time left for spare and the only hiccup was the descriptive chemistry

I answered 41 questions on the multiple choice and I only skipped wo to three letters on the FRQ. I was making up answers for the harder questions.

Hopefully, I get a 3 because I think I might be borderline 2 and 3.
