There will be room. Keep your hopes up folks.

Last year three students from my college got wait listed, and from the wait lists one of them got accepted in mid June. So, we have some hope. Though, it’s terribly slim!

Huh. Okay. I read somewhere that about 33% of college students make it off waitlists (can you tell I’ve been Googling this all afternoon?) so that seems about right.

And now we wait. Again. Whoo!

Sorry to add another post, but here are some stats for those who are interested:

Accepted: Brown / Waitlisted: Harvard
Current GPA: 3.93
SAT: 2250 (Critical Reading 750, Math 740, Writing 760)
Major(s): Environmental Studies, Economics
Other: VP of on-campus environmental club, member of orchestra, intern at small law office, semester abroad

To be honest, though, I don’t think these are all that important. Sure, you need the grades, but plenty of people probably have more impressive number than me. In my opinion, the key is to write essays that convey maturity, academic focus, and ambitious goals. That doesn’t mean that you need to aim for the Nobel Prize, but colleges want to see that you will bring something valuable to their student body. Their expectations are higher now that you’ve experienced a year or so of college, but you have also changed during that time. Demonstrate that you have a clearer sense of what you want from your education and why being accepted into that school will be mutually beneficial. Be direct yet humble. Be confident, yet shy away from absolutism. Impress them with your tone, not just your words. Give yourself plenty of time to develop your ideas and rework your essays, but know when it’s time to let go. Like others have said, college admissions is often more of a lottery than a measure of merit. At some point, you just have to do the best with what’s provided to you. I was pretty blown away to have been accepted to Brown today. It was my dream school in HS, and I had given up on it after being rejected the first time around. But I don’t think my academic standing compared to my peers has changed very much; rather, I have changed as a person, and they seem to have gotten a sense of that through my application.

I didn’t have much guidance going into the transfer process, so I hope this helps. Best of luck to y’all.

@kevlarmusicmojo, great words and advice!

Hello everyone! Just wanted to drop some stats in case people wanted them.
Accepted: Brown, Bryn Mawr, Kenyon Rejected: Swarthmore, Bowdoin
Current School: Columbia GPA: 3.51
SAT: 800 R, 730 M, 710 W ACT: 36
SAT IIs: Lit 780, US His 800, Math 1 730, M Biology 730
Major: Undecided, probably Classics and pre-med
Other: Stage managed several Classical plays, EMT-B on volunteer ambulance corps, worked as camp nurse, editor of literary magazine, president of QSA

Look, guys. My GPA was bad. Or, comparatively bad. In fact if you look at the transcript it’s worse because I got a C+ in Calc III and OH MY GOD A C+. But if you manage to look weird enough on paper and write some essays about Ancient Greek plays, sometimes that helps a lot. And really it’s all just lucky, because come on, I got rejected from Bowdoin. I got into Brown, but rejected from Bowdoin. That is how weird this all is. So if you got rejected, even if you got rejected from a bunch of places, it’s not your fault. This whole thing is just… extremely unpredictable.

Thanks for the stats! Where are you all headed?

@angrycreature

When and how did you hear from Swarthmore?

I am also waitlisted. And I am so anxious right now since I only got 2 waitlisted and no acceptance. It seems that there are a lot of people in the wait list? I really don’t want to stay in my current school…

My stats are earlier. Basically 4.0 and no fin aid will get you most of the way. I had good recs, good ecs, and average essays. My freshman essays were the strongest part of an otherwise mediocre app, I was rejected. Now I’m in at least!

Probably going to go to Edinburgh, then brown in spring

Accepted! After being rejected as a high school senior, this was a pretty great surprise.

Anyway, here are my stats:

Race: Asian American
Gender: Female

College: Wellesley College
GPA: 3.74, no ranks
Major: Computer Science
Minor: Applied Mathematics

High School: Public
GPA: 3.84, no ranks
SAT: 2320
SAT II: Biology E 800, US History 740

Extracurriculars: Volunteering at a soup kitchen, hospital; High school volleyball team, academic teams, Odyssey of the Mind, Amnesty International, various honor societies

Job experience: Summer internship at Wellesley College CS Department, research within the CS Department during the last school year, tutor at Kumon

Essays: My supplement essay was decently written, in my opinion. I wrote about overcoming my hearing disability (deafness in one ear) and stated that Brown was “louder” than Wellesley in many ways. I connected the two by saying that I needed an environment that was more vibrant and robust than Wellesley’s.

Recommendations: These were probably big factors in my acceptance. I had two professors who really admired my work, knew me well, and who put in a lot of effort to write them for me.

I also didn’t apply for financial aid, as I knew my family would probably be declined and that admissions were need-blind. This probably also helped my chances. How much, I’m not so sure.

is a facebook transfer group a good idea? i would love to know a few of my fellow transfers before heading out in the fall…unless brown does their own FB group. just a suggestion. :)

I was also waitlisted. How many people get on the waitlist? I was expecting to get flat out rejected so even being on the waitlist makes me happy!!

Congrats to all admitted students! You are all deserving.to those who were rejected or wait listed,you still have a bright future ahead !:)

@sleepytransfer I got a letter in the mail this morning. It was a kind of comical turn of events - getting a rejection letter and an acceptance in the same day :)

Hey guys, I’ve followed this thread for awhile now, and I truly admire the camaraderie formed here. Anyways, I was admitted and am wondering if there’s any sort of facebook group? Thanks guys. :)

@angrycreature

Then congrats and condolences at the same time. :p

I think Swarthmore is good but Brown is better.

Mygeeto: There isn’t at the moment, but I’m sure one will be formed soon. If you want to form it, I don’t think anyone would object. As of right now, I haven’t heard of any groups. Welcome to the thread, and congrats on your acceptance!
