Official Carleton 2013 Transfer Thread

Hey, everyone! This is a thread for the transfer applicants to Carleton for Fall '13. I just got my acceptance letter today (apparently less than 10 students from over 200 applicants were chosen, so it's a HUGE honor and I'm really excited about it) and I'm looking to talk to other Carleton admits. Congratulations to all who were accepted!

Here are my stats, if anyone was interested in applying next year:

Intended Majors: English (Creative Writing) and Linguistics
3.62 GPA, Emory University, strong upward grade trend (Dean's List my last semester). I took large course loads and I got an A- in a 400-level, advanced literature seminar my sophomore year. I took a medical withdrawal after my 3rd semester to seek treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction.
3.75 HS GPA, strong upward trend, 23/297, Full IB Curriculum + AP Calculus AB and a few language electives
32 ACT (34 E, 34 M, 35 R, 28 Sci, 10 Essay)
IB Scores: 5s in Psych HL, History HL, Biology SL, and Spanish SL, 6 in Math SL, 4 in English HL.
AP Score: 4 in Calculus AB

Extracurriculars: published writer (Atlanta-based lit. mag, Emory lit. mag, twice in Emory newspaper, and I had a short play produced professionally)
*Theater: Acting since high school; lead/supporting actor in over 15 shows, including some professional theater. Tech/stage hand in over 7. "Best Actor," HS District Theater Awards, VP of HS Theater Club. College credit for professional theater shows and special directed studies projects.
*Languages: autodidact. Fluent in Spanish (emphasis Mexican dialect), proficient in French and Italian, conversational in German.
*Trained Healing Minister
*TED X- I gave a Ted talk my freshman year on incorporating a guide into the public school system to educate others on alternative cultural, ethnic, lifestyle, and religious practices
*Work experience: a couple of jobs, one for 2 years with a performing arts studio while in Atlanta.

Recs: one from my CW professor and mentor, excellent. Talked about how a liberal arts college was the best thing for me and that I deserved another chance after I messed things up at Emory with my drinking. She knew me very personally and academically.
The other was from my Italian professor and really fleshed me out as a person. I read it, and it rocked! I love her. I got the chance to know both professors very well, and this definitely helped me in the process. I also submitted a supplemental recommendation from my manager at a Salvation Army thrift store about my work ethic and skills and translating for her, her customers, and her Spanish-speaking employees.

Why was I accepted? I really made a close connection with Carleton. I filled out part 1 of the application in September and requested materials from them multiple times during the process. I had a campus visit, overnight stay, and interview in November of last year and had my application materials submitted long before the deadlines. I fell in love with Carleton. My interview was with a senior student and it was one of the best interviews I'd ever done. On the application, I mentioned very specific things I loved about the school: I had hour-long conversations with two people who will probably advise my research/writing projects if I attend Carleton and I mentioned them by name on the application, along with a few other quirks I loved about the place. Bust of Schiller run across the field by shirtless men during a football game? Hell yeah!

Other applications/considerations: Rejected at Rice and Amherst; Yale and Swarthmore are coming soon. I expect Yale to reject me tomorrow night, but I honestly don't care. Swarthmore and Carleton were my top two choices during this time, so if I get the go from Swarthmore, I'll have to make a serious decision.

Finally, I got great aid from Carleton. I'm an independent student and got everything covered (tuition, room, board) with only 5K of loans. Swarthmore's might be better, so I'll have to consider it, but anyway, thanks everyone, and good luck!
