Official Class of 2014 Pitt Decisions Thread

Always always email …always ask! What do you have to lose? OOS S has 1440 SAT, 800 Math II/800 US His/5s in APs/ 3.7 unw/4.25 weighted and received full ride (Faison) and invite to apply for Chancellors which we waived. When he was accepted we received a first letter that said nothing about Honors, nothing about merit aid and nothing about invite to Guaranteed Admit Medicial. All of that came after in drips. The money letter came early AFTER I sent an email just asking if his admit letter with no mention of money meant he was out of luck for merit money. I was told NO! that is not what it meant. These letters come in separate envelopes staggered… I suspect we would have heard in Jan/Feb instead of Dec 24th if I had not inquired. We are going up for the Honors College Presentation in March.

pinknpreppy216: OK so interesting news from my college counselor:
She called the head of OAFA and asked about their procedure for scholarship awards this year. He told her that they review scholarship applications in order of decreasing SAT scores (or ACT scores). How does that even make sense? The people who have received scholarships have not followed the trend of decreasing SAT/ACT scores, and how could you possibly determine an order like this in a rolling admissions pool?

IMO this really doesn’t make much sense at all. I’m quite frankly sick of being given the run around. It seems like every time I call or email them it’s a different answer, depending on who you are. Not to mention the fact that everyone who is a pharmacy major has not received scholarship news… coincidence? I think not…

Sorry about the rant, but I just think this is all a little ridiculous.

I couldn’t agree more! Of all the schools, Pitt’s admissions was the most unorganized and rudest. Overall, I’m satisfied with choosing Pitt, but you just have to get through their bureaucracy. That’s why I try to help people out on here. Don’t be discouraged because it’s worth your while to attend Pitt. Just understand that nothing is 100% perfect and their admissions is an example of that.

“Of all the schools, Pitt’s admissions was the most unorganized and rudest.”^^

I’d have to disagree with you. The Pitt application process was the easiest one of all the schools that I applied to. The application format wasn’t complex, I got my acceptance letter within a month of applying, got my scholarship info 2 weeks after my acceptance and then got a honors college invite 1 week after.

“Of all the schools, Pitt’s admissions was the most unorganized and rudest.”^^

This goes to prove that each family has its own experience. When S was trying to track down a problem with transcript receipt at YALE the response was abyssmal and the woman incredibly rude. At Pitt anytime we had questions–admissions, financial aid and the medical school all responded within 48 hours.

I also had only good experiences so far.

When I e-mailed OAFA re Merit money I heard back the next day. Emailed a department head yesterday to make arrangements to sit in on a class and see the facilities when we come in for Honors day, and he got back to me the same day.

rmc: If you’re in college (at Pitt), why are you still talking with your high school counselor about calling OAFA regarding scholarships? It seems all you post about is how incompetent you find OAFA is.

Can you share your stats? Rec’d invite to Honors College a month ago, but no info re aid money…

There are lots of stats earlier in the threads

schrizto: rmc was simply repeating pinknpreppy216’s post from earlier.

My dad has called Pitt several times and has been communicating with the same woman from admissions sporadically for several months. Last week I received a scholarship for $2000/year so today he called and asked her if there was a possibility of any more money. She said 697 of the approximately 700 full rides have already been given out and the average SAT is 1515. Guess I’ll have to be happy with my two thousand.

I think you mean full-tuition scholarship. There are only about 15 full rides given per year.

I assume those 15 full rides do not include the Chancellors (I Hope)?

Yes, the full rides are the Chancellor’s. According to this link, 10 to 12 Chancellor’s Scholars enter Pitt each year. I don’t know how many full rides are given out.

[Chancellor’s Scholarship](http://www.honorscollege.pitt.edu/opportunities/chan-scholarship.html)

And actually, it is very interesting if Pitt is giving out 700 full scholarships each year. That’s quite a lot, even considering there are about 4,000 entering freshmen.

Forgot how slim the odds were on the Chancellors. At least we haven’t gotten the No Interview letter yet.

Fingers still crossed.

Everything changes from year to year, but last year they were still finishing Chancellor’s interviews in February–or maybe even later. DD turned her application in in late January. I think the numbers admissions is giving out is for the tuition scholarships. Often people refer to full tuition as full ride, but generally people look at full ride as including room and board too. The 700 number does seem high, but perhaps that is all tuition scholarships. When people are on the phone they misspeak and hear things incorrectly as well. Best wishes to all of you who are waiting.

oh, whoops. thanks for pointing that out.

@ LurkNessMonster

700 full tuition scholarship is actually not that high. Last year, the school admitted 12,722 students. 700 scholarships means that people have no more than a 5% chance of getting a full tuition scholarship. IMO, that’s a pretty small amount.

Yes, you’re right, even if Pitt gave out 700 scholarships a year, many of them might have been unused by students who chose to matriculate elsewhere.

accepted, 27 act 3.11 unweighted gpa

i was accepted into honors college!

Scholarship info came today. FULL TUITION SCHOLARSHIP!! Holy craps.
I was terrified by heartmoonstar’s post about 697 of 700 being gone. I thought I wouldn’t get one for sure. But I did! So happy!

Also got invite for Chancellor’s! I’m not sure if I’m going to apply, since the odds are so slim… My family is encouraging it, though. I’d do it in a heartbeat if it weren’t for having to bug my teachers for LOR’s again and the interview in person (don’t want to have to pay airfare + hotel to visit if there’s such a tiny chance of receiving it). I’ll have to think about it some more.

Still, though. Exciting!!
