General Comments:
dont really know much about the school, other than location and that someone my mom knows that goes there loves it. I didnt expect them to give me my decision with 2 weeks of sending out my app lol. I sent out the app on like January 12th and got the letter on the 28th or so.

How long should I expect to wait for financial info?

Your CR/M SAT scores have to be at least 1450 to get scholarship money, and even that is not guaranteed. ACT usually needs to be in the 33, 34, 35 range.

Not necessarily true. There have been some URMs that have recieved full tuition scholarships with less than 1400 SATs.

First off congrats on the scholarship pink!

And, yea, I have a 1450 CR/M SAT score (why won’t they count the writing section :(), and got no scholarship $ whatsoever (I have full tuition at pitt regardless because of my parents’ employment benefits, but I was hoping to get into the R+B costs). However, some kid from my school got a $2k/year scholarship with a 1410 CR/M, 3.85 UW GPA (semi-rigorous courseload, not as rigorous as me or the top kids from my school though) so who knows what’s up with scholarships this year.

I was really replying to the poster directly above me, who I’m assuming is not URM (due to his saying he has no hook). Sorry I didn’t make that clear.

^^^
No need too be sorry. My post was actually for the benefit of others (some of whom may be URMs) that may read this thread later.

…full tuition scholarship! <3 Pitt’s my safety but I’d probably choose it over Rutgers…

(2340, 3.87/4.56, blah blah)

saf:
Thanks for your kind thoughts. At least, D is IN. Also awaiting word on merit aid from private colleges. At least we can afford Pitt. We’re older parents, worked hard, lived within our means and own our townhouse at this point. I’m disabled, but W still working. All D’s grandparents are deceased and the inheritances we got are helpful. Still, merit aid would be nice. D also in Rutgers, but that school is too huge and spread out. 52K for private schools certainly favors the very rich and poor. Middle class gets squeezed, but I would not want to change places with those who have less. I appreciated what we have. Public schools taking big financial hit and are costly, too. Forty years ago, my summer and part-time job earnings funded a good chunk of tuition. D’s earning last summer amount only to a drop in the bucket. To all the students out there: Good luck and please work constructively – and across party lines – to strengthen our country. You ALL are privileged.

Motion, I am not sure if the full tuition scholarship would have covered the room and board costs, so no need to worry. I remember a girl on this forum lamenting this fact a different year. Here are the university’s guidelines:

“Students who receive a full tuition scholarship from more than one University
source, including tuition remission provided to University employees, will have
the academic scholarship awarded by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid
reduced or cancelled.”

I think full tuition means tuition only, and as a chancellor’s nominee ($2,000, etc) is simply a lesser tuition scholarship I think that wouldn’t go towards the room and board in the end. It might have, but you are so very lucky to have the tuition exemption already! It’s great that Pitt does this, I wish some other universities like where my parent works did the same.

Full tuition scholarship is only for the tuition. However, if you have outside scholarships (not tuition only) they can be used for room & board and they can be stacked. For example: child has full tuition scholarship – it covers the OOS tuition. He has an engineering scholarship and another outside scholarship so these are applied to his room & board, fees etc. You also get a tax form for all the scholarship money thus you have to file with the IRS.

way to go pinknpreppy!!! have been checking in since son heard, just to see when you would finally hear!

Thank you everyone! For anyone who is still waiting, hang in there. I know that I was reviewed multiple times before being awarded money. Now comes the hard part… decision time between Butler and Pitt. I’m worried about feeling lost at Pitt, which is huge compared to Butler. I’m at a very small private boarding school now and have to decide whether I want a total population of 4,000 students or 30,000.

You will find that no matter where you go to school, you will find your own groups. My theory has always been that you meet about the same number of people wherever you go to school; you just have more to choose from at a bigger school. DD went from small prep day school (about 75 in her class) to Pitt and she is quite happy. Those Pitt football games are sure fun. Best wishes in your decision.

Pinkandpreppy, were you offered any merit at Butler? It’s my son’s favorite school, but we most likely will not be able to swing it without merit. Ferris State is so much more affordable with the automatic scholarships he’ll have (and hopefully he may get more) … we’ll apply for aid & see what happens, though, at Butler.

kelsmom, I wasn’t offered anything there (apparently pharmacy scholarships are incredibly hard to come by…) either. I’m really concerned about finding $15,000 in student loans at a reasonable interest rate :frowning: My parents are willing to pay for part of the cost, but not all of it. Have you tried applying for some outside scholarships (local and state ones especially)?

I’m not an expert, but I have been to both cities and it seems to me that Pittsburgh, especially the area where Pitt and Carnegie Mellon are located, would be a more exciting/fun place to be a college student. (I’m not familiar with the pharm program but will you be there for 6 years?) I can understand your apprehension about the size of the school, but keep in mind the old adage that “you can make a big school smaller but you can’t make a small school bigger.” I’m not saying that big schools are always better but just something to keep in mind. For anything in the medical field I don’t think you can beat Pitt either, and that scholarship sure is nice! Can you go back and visit both? Good luck!

pinknpreppy, I had also heard that pharm scholarships are very hard to come by at BU. Since there are so many girls & so few boys in pharm, though, we thought maybe we’d get lucky! He has applied for outside scholarships, but we know from his sister’s experiences that those don’t add up all that quickly. We are being realistic … we will see what financial aid packages bring (and he can always transfer for the professional phase if he isn’t happy).

Well my son decided last night to take the Full Tuition and enroll at Pitt. No chance of any of his other schools giving us anywhere near enough $$ to make it worthwhile.

Very exciting.

Congratulations DonnaMom! Your son must feel happy to have settled on one school. For me, the waiting continues…

Congrats! Doesn’t it feel good to have the decision made? Once they get the enrollment deposit, all the other stuff start to arrive including the housing and PittStart. Although some will say that it doesn’t matter which PittStart you go to, I would recommend the earlier the better!
