Official Class of 2014 Pitt Decisions Thread

Thanks. We went over the list of schools we haven’t heard from and none are going to come near Pitt’s generous scholarship. He also wants honors housing so was hoping the sooner the better to get that paperwork in.

Going back end of March for Honors Day - hope he still likes it then.

Pitt is a great school, and my daughter loves it there, but why does your son have to enroll so early? Can’t he wait to see what the situation is in April, when he hears back from all his schools? Housing at Pitt is guaranteed for three years, so he won’t miss out as long as he makes the regular deadline.

He visited Pitt and Carnegie Mellon in the fall. Went with the thinking he’d love C<M and hate Pitt but it turned out the other way.

He loved the campus, the city, and the Honors College. No negatives for him whatsoever.

Honors Day in March will be instead of Admitted Student Day I guess, was not going to be decision making day, just for more info.

He also got into NEU with a 17K scholarship (still going to cost over 30K and he doesn’t want all the loans), SUNY Albany (Never wanted to go). Still waiting on SUNY BInghamton (only applied because he was forced to), RIT, (liked Pitt better), NYU, BU and Wash U - none of which are going to give significant merrit money.

We are not going to get any need based aid except for the base loan that everyone gets.

So when we sat down and went through everything, along with the fact that he wants Honors Housing (and heard that the earlier your paperwork is in the better) he made the decision to enroll now.

Definitely not settling. He is very happy with his decision and was shopping for Pitt gear online last night.

^^He’ll fit right in with Pitt gear. I have never seen a college where so many students wear college gear. Tell him not to buy too much on-line because DD gets $15 sweatshirts off the sale racks on campus and they usually have $3 t-shirts.

On the topic of “settling.” My daughter had some choices at the end of the admissions season last year and selected Pitt because of the nice scholarship and the way she was treated by the faculty when she visited campus. In the fall the topic of choice came up and she said: “Pitt was my first choice. I’m here.” She has never regreted her decision. She called in the middle of the game last night and was on her way to a physics association meeting. The people at our house were amused because they said only a physics group could hold a meeting during the Super Bowl.

Oh, and honors housing last year had a May (9 or 10) application deadline, so it was after deposits were due. The students had to write an essay about why they wanted to live in honors housing.

<<<she called=“” in=“” the=“” middle=“” of=“” game=“” last=“” night=“” and=“” was=“” on=“” her=“” way=“” to=“” a=“” physics=“” association=“” meeting.=“” people=“” at=“” our=“” house=“” were=“” amused=“” because=“” they=“” said=“” only=“” group=“” could=“” hold=“” meeting=“” during=“” super=“” bowl.=“”>>></she>

ROFL - that is soooo my son.

Yup, he will get tons of FREE t-shirts so there is no need to spend money on t-shirts.

General Comments:

I submitted my app on 12/21 and got admitted by 1/6. But I didn’t even find out until 2/1 because they somehow lost my acceptance letter and I had to call to find out. Pitt is my safety school and somewhat of a risk since my gpa is only 3.64 but then again I got accepted in 2 weeks so no need to worry right? Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come (getting accepted into UMich- Ann Arbor since I got deferred).

Also got a full scholarship (tuition, room and board, fees, books) by helen faison scholarship. UPitt is my number 3 because i wasn’t a fan of the campus and i got into UNC-chapel hill but i’m waiting on Wake Forest because its my number 1. Good thing UNC and Wake meet 100% of need or id be forced into going to Upitt!!!

AC, claiming you’d be ‘forced into going to upitt’ (with a full ride?) isn’t going to make you very popular on a UPitt forum.

mondaysun - i shouldn’t have used the word “forced” and for that i am sorry. i know Upitt is an amazing school and the possibilities are endless there. its just the campus is pretty iffy for me and if you or anyone else could help me out with my idea about the campus that would be great! if my other 2 don’t work out, ill be pretty darn happy going to pitt b/c its a great free education. i won’t cry about it. i shouldn’t have said forced and instead, maybe should have said its a nice fall back? sorry for those who i have offended

AC–That was a classy apology that I , for one, accept. I think the campus is great. Pulsing with excitement and energy. But, clearly, it’s not for everyone. Best of luck wherever you end up.

lol, I was completely oblivious to the Super Bowl also.

Schritzto–so i asked her how the physics meeting went and she said it was cancelled and she did not know why. My guess? Super Bowl.

Congrats on the scholarship pinknpreppy and good luck choosing! Pitt > Butler

Has anyone received any scholarship notification recently?

D still waiting with 1410 SATs, top 5 percent. We’re starting to feel unloved or that we’re being stood up after being asked out on a date (i.e. admitted).

I doubt you’ll get anything with a 1410 SAT, but I guess you never know.

Yeah - my D is n a similar boat. She excels in her classes with all A’s, high honors National Honor Society, etc. but her standardized testing doesn’t seem to meet their criteria for scholarship  Frustrating to read comments from some who have received full scholarships, yet really don’t want to attend PITT or feel like they are settling. Oh well . . .

Sharose: At D and I have satisfaction of knowing Pitt is getting more selective. It helps prove Pitt’s worth to D – but a break on the price would feel better. D now 3 for 3 in admissions and has received big $ from a pricey private school. We’re starting to feel we went about college search in intelligent manner, without the whole Ivy craziness. Pitt defintely still in the running for us, but D is really pleased with the private scholarship. Scholarships make you feel WANTED. How is your D doing (if you care to say)?
