** Official Class of 2018 University of Michigan EA Decisions Thread **

Another question: Does a significant improvement in GPA from freshman to senior year help a lot if at all? Thanks in advance

Yes, they love to see an upward grade trend.

@tomthebomb96 Yes, the admissions counselor who led the presentation at my school noted that grade trend is very important.

It definitely helps, because it shows that you’ve either gotten better or have started working harder in academics. Of course, even an increasing trend will not make up for a GPA below around 3.4 or 3.5.

I think Mich is probably a reach/low reach for me but let’s see what you guys think.

GPA: 90 (we don’t do 4 pt scale but I guess that’s a 3.5)
SAT: 2080 (math: 630, reading: 690, writing: 760)
From freshman to junior year my GPA increased 5 points
I have a few very strong extra curriculars (I work at the aquarium, am part of newspaper and student gov and swim team) and over 200 hours of community service.
Great essays (I’ve already gotten into 5 schools with them)
Superb teacher/counselor recs
2 APs, US & Lang/Comp (thats the max we’re allowed to take at my school), very high course rigor bc I attend one of NYC’s most competitive high schools.

Applied to LSA

OK, so since this turned into a chance thread and all… (wow I told myself I’d never do this)
GPA: 3.8
ACT: 28 (I know, it’s bad…)
APs/Honors: 9 total, 3 APs (my school isn’t huge on AP…)
OOS, but my father lives in state and my family is moving to MI this summer, so hopefully I’ll qualify as a resident if I get accepted.
ECs:
Church youth group leader-4 years
Church camp leader- 3 years
Swim team- 2 years
Hospital volunteer- 2 years
Voice lessons- 4+ years (selected for state’s Allstate Choir)
Co-founded a school-operated book club
Selected for a medical observation/shadowing program that only 30/200 students get accepted to (this is a class/EC)
I’m probably forgetting a few, but those are the generals…

Essays: these are what I’m most confident in.
-My common app one was about overcoming a spinal surgery sophomore year which put me out of school for 3 months.
-The community one was about how I was raised Mormon but am deciding to attend a school like Michigan instead of BYU because I want to experience the “real” world/diversity
-Last essay was about my odd combination of wanting to be pre-med/major in PoliSci.

Recommendations: Haven’t read, but pretty confident in them.

So I know my stats aren’t incredibly impressive, but I’m hoping that my essays/recommendations/ECs really set me apart.

What does everyone think?
(I’d like to thank this thread for keeping me from studying for my Honors Physics and AP Psych finals tomorrow hahahahahaha I’m dying )

Also, I applied to LSA if that counts…

The problem really is that i took more and more APs each year… 1 freshman, 2 sophomore, 4 junior, and now 6 senior year so my GPA has not really moved from the 96 range. I’m thinking if I did well and was able to hold my grades with the course load then I am alright. I don’t really know why I didn’t improve, but at least I’m consistent!

@ersnyc probably a high match since your essays seem to be very successful. Your sat is OK for LSA, since the average is around a 2050 and you’re oos. GPA of course is fairly low, average for LSA is around a 3.8, but your essays may make up for that a bit.

@ersnyc, not sure if 90=3.5 but if it does it would be btwn low reach-high match for you

@carnold96: low reach - high match as well for LSA, Reach for CoE

what the heck is happening to this thread??

@carnold96 Decent chances. I would say slight reach. Your grades and test scores are on the low side. But your course rigor, EC’s, and essays sound solid.

A chance thread would have made sense 6 months ago. We receive our decisions in like two days. Take a seat

@ersnyc I would say you have a good chance (match), considering you come from a competitive high school it makes up for the low GPA. Your EC’s sound solid. Where else did you get accepted to?

@Apodge, because of delayed decisions, people getting more nervous and want to know what to expect… if decisions were released on the 13th this thread would end at 40 pages and be dead by now lol

I feel like in general GPA is such an inconsistent thing. BC at one school a 4.0 is pretty common while at another (like my own) only about 2-3 kids in the whole grade have a GPA at that level. That’s why school profiles are so important, bc they see you within your own school vs comparing kids from different places.

@apodge, everyone is just bored and avoiding studying, at least I know I am.

@MiW140, i got into:
UVM
Tulane
Indiana University
University of Wisconsin at Madison
UMass Amherst.

If I don’t get into mich I will be attending Wisco.

@ersnyc According to Collegeboard’s scale, a 90 would be around a 3.6, so I’m sticking with high match for you.

Yeah, this is turning into a chances thread because we don’t want to set our hopes too high. I’m glad I got some feedback because now I know I’m not a complete mismatch for UofM. It’s given me a little hope, yet I’m still realistic.
BTW, I feel really bad for the class of 2015 students who will come to read this next year and not find decisions until page 300 haha

@ersnyc I wish the best of luck to you! Hopefully I will be seeing you around campus next year. (Assuming we both get in lol)
