Official Georgetown University Transfer Thread 2011

What you have postulated vis-a-vis the admissions process sounds perfectly logical to me.

Hey guys, I just want an explanation on what credentials I need to get into MSB.

Here are my grades so far:
College: CC in the Pittsburgh area
GPA: 3.769/4, looking in the 3.88 range at then end of the semester
ECs: Phi Theta Kappa, Honors program at my CC, planning to get more involved with school and church I attend
SATs: Do not want to go into detail, but I plan on retaking them to get a better shot at acceptance

I would like to know what other credentials I need to transfer into MSB and get to know more about the process in general.

If someone would bump me, thanks.

@eyethink. Thanks!

@Bubby90nh. If you look on page 2 of this thread, you will see that I posted some statistics that I received straight from the admissions office. That should give you, and anyone else who is interested, an idea of what is expected in order to be accepted into the MSB or any other school at Georgetown. As I’m sure you can imagine, a lot more than just your “numbers” goes into the overall decision. Hope this helps.

@bubby, do you go to CCAC? I know a few people there.

Anyway, I’m writing here because I’m in a dilemma. I applied to Georgetown, obviously, and I know I probably won’t hear back from the adcom before May 6 - when my Vanderbilt deposit is due. Is there any way I can get any insight as to where I stand? Is this what the “leaning decision” or whatever is?

@theclassof2013. What I would do is call them tomorrow, tell them your situation, and ask them who is in charge of the admissons for whatever school/major you applied to. From there, send that person (the one in charge of the committee) an email telling him/her your situation. If you cannot get an early read, I would consider putting down a deposit for Vandy, and–if you get into and rather go to Georgetown–just be prepared to lose the money. I’m not entirely sure about the deposit strategy, so you might want to ask around on College Confidential, but I have heard of people using it when placed in your dilemma. Good luck and please be sure to tell us how it goes!

Thank you @hopestobeahoya

@classof2013 - I would do exactly what Hoya said. Generally speaking double depositing is frowned upon, but in cases like this I believe it is acceptable, provided you make a quick decision once you hear back from the other school.

Sometimes just calling the school and explaining your situation will net you an extension. Doesn’t hurt to try.

Does anyone know how the results will be sent out? Snailmail? Email? Inyourfaceyou’renotworthourtimeclusterbomb?

@theclassof2013. How did it go? Did you call in today?
@ThrowingMuses. Generally speaking, a lot of people will get an email for an acceptance. Some people will receive emails for waitlists as well. I believe rejections only come through mail. Someone in the world might already have heard from GU, but because not everyone uses College Confidential, it’s hard to say exactly when decisions come out. I would think we should hear SOMETHING in the next week.

Put me in the “desperately hoping they take their time, so they can see second semester grades” camp.

I haven’t called yet. I was still trying to work out an extension with Vandy. But I could only get a week, so I’m calling tomorrow.

Hey guys, so I’m really nervous about whether or not I’ll get in to gtown. I have not heard anything back from them since I turned in my application on March 1st. I am mostly concerned with the Alumni Interviews. Has anyone gotten them? For the selection process do they choose specific people? I would really appreciate anyone who can answer my questions. I simply cannot wait until June 1st to get a decision. The wait is killing me.

^ They’re still doing interviews?

I wasn’t even sure when they started. I just assumed that some people would get it and some people won’t. I just hope that those who do not get it are not in the rejection pile.

@Gtown5,
No need to worry at all. Alumni interviews are done before applications are reviewed for admissions and are only performed in areas where willing alumni live. If you haven’t heard back from Georgetown about anything that means two things:

  1. No alumni willing to conduct interviews lives in your area
  2. Georgetown has thus far received all of the necessary materials to review your application.
    Hopefully this puts your mind at ease. I know everyone (including myself) is going to be high tension until decisions are made.

@Hopes,
Thanks for starting and keeping this blog going. It’s a good way to connect with other prospective students and I feel it’s easier to communicate with people who are in the same boat than with the admissions office, who sometimes tend to be vague/unclear.

@Gtown5. The alumni interview is a very interesting thing, and I really do not know how it is given out. For example, I’m currently a student at William and Mary, and I have a friend at William and Mary who is also trying to transfer to Georgetown, but I got an interview and he did not. On top of it, the person who emailed me about the interview asked me if I wanted to have it in Williamsburg or Northern Virginia, which is where I live. Interestingly enough, the same friend I mentioned before also lives in Northern Virginia as well. This leads me to think that it is not only dependent on availability like the admissions committee says it is, but then again, I honestly have no idea how it is given out. I sent in Part 1 of my application pretty early so maybe that’s why? Regardless, people definitely get in w/out interviews, so I wouldn’t sweat it.

@newtransfer259. No problem! College Confidential has helped me out so much that I thought I should create this thread and return the favor. I really want to get into Georgetown because I didn’t have a great experience at W&M, and so naturally, reading about people who are in a similar situation (people who are at four-year schools and want to leave their current institution for another one) is VERY helpful.

dont stress over the interview at all.
Everyone is right so far, if you do not receive one it simply means no alumni in your area were able to grant interviews at this point and there is still a chance you receive a slip. I have a family member who conducts interviews for Gtown and she told me that the interviews are a really small part of the process. The interviewer submits some brief comments about you but they are more a chance for you to ask questions than an evaluative formal interview. It is rare at Georgetown for the interview to be a deciding factor especially when not everyone gets one.

Random question but did anyone submit their photo with their Gtown application? I know on the paper app they had a picture option…
