OFFICIAL Haverford Class Of 2013 Application Thread!

Yeah--half price appetizers. It's big on the east coast. I don't know where you live, but the Applebees franchise like owns the chain restaurant scene where I live. Anyway, I'd also like to extend my good luck to everyone! Let's be in that forty percent!!!

haha, yeah im from the east coast. just wasn't aware -- the last thing i remember about applebees is that they would only char my burger (i like my meat cooked medium rare) and i dont think i ever went back. =]

same with radio- I just rarely go to Applebee's. I don't have a problem with it, the food is great there, but, maybe i'll go there more often because of the appetizers =P

is it just a monday thing, mc? or is it every night? im intrigued.

Haha, it's every night. My friends and I frequent it. It turns into a the hangout for teens on the weekends. After our school plays and basketball games it's absolutely packed. It's a staple of the Parkland high school area, really, haha.

You go to parkland mc? We always compete against you in Odyssey of the Mind. The past few years. So you're not too far from Haverford either...

Wow! No way! My girlfriend is on the OM team! I go to there practices sometimes, hahaha. That's so funny. Quite a coincidence!

at+t: its all about connections.

The Bubble That Didn't Burst :: Inside Higher Ed :: Higher Education's Source for News, Views and Jobs

read it and weep, my ed friends. does anyone know how many applied ed last year?

answer: 254. meaning that this year, they got 287.
they accepted 103 last year...

haha yea... small world.

=O It almost seems to defy logic, but when you think about what the state schools have been telling people, it makes a little more sense...

what have the state schools been telling people?
just talked to my mom - she makes a good point. the need blind thing helps them out a lot.

Some public state schools have been talking about budget cuts and stuff like that- which means uncertainty to some people. (i.e. in 2 years what will the lack of money do for our child's education, etc.) It was mentioned in the article I believe.

Are we still theorizing that they will take about 40%?? Or because it's so many, they'll take less?

well, i suppose it depends on the quality of the applicants (duh) and their concerns about filling spots with regular decision spots (maybe moreso this year because of the economy?) - but if they were to take the same exact amount that they took last year (103), the accept rate would drop from 40% to 36%. really not that big a difference... i just think we were all hoping that that rate might go up.

I suppose the percent may decrees slightly, but they probably wont accept the same number...

i just watched those "what's it like to go to hford" videos again, and at one point, i was actually salivating. this is unhealthy.

Hahaha, wow, you want this as badly as I do then. Where's everyone considering for regular decision?

OK…here are some numbers to ponder as far as the ED rates for the last several years. The most recent figures I could find, quoted above as being for last year, are for the year started fall of 2007, as the Common Data Set is either not yet published for the 2008-2009 school year, or I just couldn’t find it:

ED Apps Applied Accepted %

Fall 2007 254 103 41
Fall 2006 235 99 42
Fall 2005 208 104 50
Fall 2004 230 102 44
Fall 2003 202 103 51

Looking at this data, the numbers that seem most consistent are the number of students accepted early decision, which hasn’t varied by more than five students the last several years. This would seem to indicate that, assuming the freshman class size is consistent year to year, Haverford places a priority on keeping the percentage of the class filled by ED vs. RD about the same each year. That would then imply that they would take no more than 104, maybe 105 at the most this year?

Of course, the article also mentioned the concern that although ED apps are up, there could be a flattening or drop in RD apps…i.e., a zero sum game. If Haverford is concerned that RD apps could be flat or down, then they could decide to fill a bigger percentage of next year’s class with ED apps. That is what this year’s ED applicants should probably hope for.

wow thats interesting casey. youre an EDer too? for rd, im thinking hamilton, cornell, carleton, mt holyoke, wellesley.
