**OFFICIAL Mt SAC CC TRANSFER THREAD**

this is my first time in this forum and I have a question…SINCE THE COUNSELOR in sac DOESN’T EVEN GIVE ME ANY ADVISE :(… I’m going to be a freshman in mtSac and I was wondering if I should take “READ 90”…because I was place in it. OR SHOULD I JUST RETAKE IT AND TRY TO SCORE “READ 100”…because I have 5 classes already…
English 67
History of Western Philosophy
Introduction to Criminology
Rock Music History
and “READ 90”
…and I have a BioEngineering major…and I don’t even have a math class yet …place in wait list for “precal” and “college algebra”…hope you can give me some advise :D

If you’re planning on just transferring out of SAC and not obtaining your AA you do not have to take any Read class. Otherwise, yes try to test out of Read 90. You’re going to have this semester to prepare for it seeing as you already have your classes together.

I wanna to transfer to UCLA
BUT my counselor told me IT’LL TAKE AT LEAST “5 YEARS”!!!

I don’t know what to do…can anyone help me?
Major: Bioengineering
going to retake the English Placement test…hopefully AT LEAST get into Eng 68…can’t even take Biology.

Wow, this thread exploded since my last post. Dainese, i’ll just take 16 units this fall. I heard 16 units is actually more than enough. I’m just going to keep the load comfortable. After all, my GPA is my most important asset if i’m going to be transferring to schools like UCLA.

I understand that I have not taken any honors classes this semester. I am not eligible for it yet. I’ll make sure I enroll after my first semester. I think it actually works out that I don’t take ENG1A this semester. Once I join the honors program I can use ENG1A as one of my honors classes as well as throwing a few honor science classes into the mix. The requirement for TAP eligibility is 6 honors classes right?

How are honors classes by the way? In terms of difficulty. I’m sure they’ll require the student to be a lot more involved in discussion etc. Can they be compared to high school AP classes?

Thanks for all the help thus far. By the way, should I be purchasing books now? I hear professors differ in how they use text books. Should I at least attend the first class and hear out what they have to say before purchasing?

dang this threads is picking up speed lol

@vanquish - 16 is enough, i normally took anywhere from 14-16 units and ccould handle it easily. but 17 killed me lol. and taking eng as an honors course is a good idea, but remmeber its much harder to obtain honors courses especially engilsh. probably the most sought out after class lol

tap is 6, correct. tag is as well.

in terms of difficulty…on a scale of 1-10
my easiest normal class - 1 * sociology 1
my easiest honors class - 5 * art history
hardest normal class - 4 * rock history (slept all the time)
hardest honors class - 10 lol * intro to psych

it depends on the prof really. some will teach more much in depth material expecting you to read and some wont teach at all letting you teach yourself…
from my experience, the 2 hardest profs ive had at mtsac ended up teaching me the most and one ended up helping me write a letter of rec. :)

im not sure how AP classes are, someone else will have to chime in. but my gf did IB in hs and she said honors was cake compared to IB.

and np
and no. no need for books unless u feel you must (some people like to be prepared).
i always wait for the first day because sometimes previous students who were just in the class will want to sell their books, sometimes profs dont require books, or sometimes you end up needing more books than what the bookstore says…

always wait for the first day IMO unless you know for sure you can get your money back.

@churokee - are you an international student? sorry if you arent.
cuz flutie is right, READ is not required to transfer. i think the counselor probably recommended you take READ just to improve your reading skills to make it easier for you to keep up. but who knows what their intentions were…

English 67
History of Western Philosophy
Introduction to Criminology
Rock Music History

these 4 classes look great. id try to place into eng 68 if possible, if not dont fret.
since you want to go to UCLA, if you havnt already, check out assist.org

it will not take 5 years. jeez…what are they feeding these students?!
if you are a full time student and somehow obtain priority registration there is no reason to not transfer within 3 years. unless your lazy.

this is the only way i can justify the counselor telling you 5 years is what it will take

 1. getting science classes is a real pain.
 2. lots of pre-reqs to science courses
 3. budget cuts
 4. if you fall into the “stereotypical” community college student category
 5. you are working and in school doing part time for both

unless one/some of those 5 things are holding you back, there is no way it will take you 5 years. however, science majors sometimes take an extra year to transfer which is why i say 3 years. since science is so impacted, UCLA will most likely require you to finish all your GE’s and major pre-reqs to even be considered for admission.

your classes look fine now. bad news is that eng 67/68 will not transfer to UCLA so thats 8 credits paid for but not accounted for. but the good news is, if you get a bad grade it wont transfer over. :D

@Dainese Thanks for the info.
BUT when I check assist earlier, I saw this. I’m not sure if it’s the right (perquisite). But it seems to have more than 60 units ITSELF : [ASSIST Report: MTSAC 09-10 UCLA Articulation Agreement by Major](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)

yup thats correct. thats why some science majors can take 3 years…
the key to transferring out ASAP is to plan your courses out accordingly.
knock 2 birds out with 1 stone. take a major-preq that also satisfies an area of IGETC

for example, bio 1 satisfies your major-prereqs plus the sciences area of IGETC
also keep in mind, it says OR under a few categories on the assist page you sent me. so you can choose :)

if you decide to do honors, i hope you do, talk to linda diaz and everything will be much easier…she is the best adviser on campus. she will walk you through what classes to take, how to get into UCLA, etc etc…for now focus on getting into honors and knocking out some ez GE’s. but dont overlap GEs with major pre-reqs that you can be taking to fulfill an area of IGETC. but what you have now shuold be fine :)

@Dainese thanks…and I’m trying to get into Honors Program too. But I need to get into English 1A first. I was wondering…after READ 90…do I need to take READ 100?

i dont think you need to even take READ 90…or 100 to transfer to UCLA
do u need it as a pre-req to something?

I don’t think it said on assist.org. So is it okay to take it out if I got in classes like pre-cal and Biology?

for anybody that has recently taken the calculus placement test… which study guide should i focus on more? The online practice test or the mt sac pdf guide? both are found here under the math section:

[Welcome to Mt. San Antonio College](http://www.mtsac.edu/students/assessment/info.html)

thanks

p.s. just passed the chem test, thanks jet for the advice

THEY CANCEL “PHILOSOPHY” class! omg…back to four class now :(

@churroke- wow that sucks!
try to get another, phil usually has a lot of droppers
and it should be okay to take out READ. i see no use for it…and if worse comes to worse and you do need it, then simply take it later on haha

@boober - good job! :D

yea these guys have helped me more than a counselor lol

@Dainese…and the worst part is that I DROP “Intro to Gerontology” just to take that. :frowning: My schedule is falling apart again :(

Hey are you talking about PHIL 5?

@nifloe yea thanks for caring :)

hey guys. so i finally called mt. sac about the trig class that they won’t let me register for. they said to take a copy of my hs transcript so that they can add me to the class. so now i gotta go all the way to mt. sac just for that.

anyone else know what other classes i might be able to register that are not all full and are part of requirements?

oh and btw does anyone know what time the math and science dep. building 61 closes at today? or friday?

@churroke - dang what a complete bust :frowning:
keep trying to add, i honestly believe you can get another class fairly easily. it will just take a lot of perseverance lol

@thatone - what do they need a hs transcript for if u passed the test?! how stupid.
but anyways…there are a lot of other classes that have no pre-reqs (not sure if they are full or not though.

if you go to your myportal, log in, click the “student” tab and in the middle you should see “search for classes” click that. and on the bootom left corner you can search “open classes only” as well as “no pre-reqs required”

then it will give you a COMPLETE list of ALL the classes that are open/no pre-reqs.
you can only narrow it down by subject/quarter/prof/time slot

and the math building doesnt really have a main office type deal…so i dont know what you would go there for…who told you to go there? (not trying to sound sarcastic, sorry if i do) i would think ud be going to the assessment testing center or admissions…and they close at 7 M-Th and 4:30 on Fri.

but the math/science buildings aka 61 only have classes and tutoring centers and bathrooms. i dont know of any “front desk” type deal. maybe someone else can help you out there… :(
