Yea I def want to join honors. Ah well, I think I’ll do 68 over the summer then… I’ll try and appeal though and see what they say. Looking to transfer to USC or UCLA. Backup is UCSD or UCI. Not sure what my major is yet but I’m looking to become a pharmacist so Im gonna talk to the counselor and see what they recommend for my major. I dont think I can get a A in Calculus so that is a reason why Im thinking about taking PreCal…

@blackmamba - imma be honest, i am bad at math and this is just personal advice (not from experience). I would highly advise you NOT to take math 160 and go straight into 180. take it during fall or spring. that way atleast the class is MUCH slower and you can get tutoring for it. you will probably end up regretting taking 160. you placed into calc for a reason :)

and dont fret about 68. a lot of peeps place into it. i did as well. i suggest taking it during the fall because that way during the fall you can take other transferable classes and be able to join honors and start taking honors in the winter. :D

during the fall you should aim for classes that generally are not going to be full…unless you are a risk taker. during my first semester i took…philosophy 1, sociology 1, history of jazz, and English 68. all of these classes were NOT full.

if you take 68 during the summer thats fine too. but either way you will need 9 trans units. and unless you can do that in the summer, you are probably better off taking a different class in the summer. one that is usually not a honors class. like a science/math? or social science.

there are a lot of honors courses but not all are offered. ive managed to gather…Psychology 1AH, Eng 1AH, Eng 1BH, Eng 1CH,Sociology 5H, and…Art History 4H

i think taking english honors classes is usually easier and more beneficial to you as a student and writer. i cant stress enough how much a honors english class has helped improve my writing. although it was extremely challenging at some points…it makes the rest of mtsac look like cake.

btw UCI and UCSD are both schools you can TAG. TAG is the transfer admission guarantee? the name is self explanatory. if you meet the requirements you are guaranteed a spot. (plus u can get scholarships, priority housing, etc)

UCLA has TAP, transfer alliance program. not a guarantee but you get priority admission. so far ive heard of no student who has TAP and gotten rejected. but im sure there are cases.

USC does not have any agreement, its in or bust. but i can help you with USC if you decide to purse it. trust me i fretted over USC for 1 year haha. but i can help with UC’s as well.

sorry for the long message. im really passionate about this haha
good luck!

Thanks Dainese. Dont worry about the long message… I always read every single word on your posts. They’re very very helpful. Thanks for putting in your time to respond. Just wondering, what math did you take when you take first at Sac? Also what did you take in the summer?

thanks im glad i can help others.

my first class was chinese 1 which i took in the winter, not summer. my first summer class was eng 1A honors.
and my first math, which i held up for the whole time until now…is math 130. (college algebra)

i hated math. first time i took the placement test i placed into math 71. isntead of taking math 71 i just got tutoring for a higher placement test and placed into math 130 :P

when your registration date comes…be prepared to take classes in the oddest of times. like 7PM -10PM. or fridays…ew.
to put it in perspective, my registration date is still late enough that all the classes im taking now are in the afternoon-evening, M-F, and M-Th ending at 9:20 PM. most morning times will fill up quick because most students are part-time employees. but try to find a class time that will help you the most. i personally love evening classes, wake up late, do homework, last minute studying, whateverrrr i want, and by 7 PM im hopefully awake enough to devote 100 percent of my attention instead of falling asleep.

This is a stupid question but … how do I know which math class I should take? Haha. When I clicked to see my placement results, I got this:

MATH100 - Survey of College Math
MATH110 - Elementary Statistic
MATH120 - Finite Mathematics
MATH130 - College Algebra
MATH150 - Trigonometry
MATH160 - Precalculus Mathematics

Does this mean I take MATH160?

means you can take any of those :)

You only need 1 math class? Math is my weakest subject… never got an A and only got a B once in HS… but I just studied my butt off for the placement test lol Did all the sample questions and the study guide packet. Really helped since they almost used the same questions just different numbers.

Oh btw my placement test results for math say this…
MATH140 - Calculus for Business
MATH180 - Calculus & Analytic

I should be ok if I decide to take Math 160 right?

Did the orientation yesterday… it was boring as hell… everyone was like falling asleep haha

Got my registration date… June 11th… =( Now its time for me to make a list of classes and 10 alternates lol I dont really mind night classes… just as long as I get a good prof…

Do honor classes give you extra point in GPA?

thanks Dianese & AAW00 !
oh my… T__T so i FAILED the math test for calc!! apparently, i SUCKK at taking placement tests D: and at the same time, my math skills are weeeaaaakkkkkk xx
i have to retake it now (prolly going into pre calculus then…) but the thing is, I don’t have the time to retake the test before my orientation which is next monday D: !!
is it a problem if i don’t have that test done by then??? ToT im gonna go back and retake the other test next week though…
& i was wondering…
- since i am probably going to retake precalc or even trig sob for a fall session, in the spring, can i go into calculus business at least?
- how bad does taking such a low math class look on my transcript… my goal is to get into UCLA )': and I’m either going into architecture or nursing…
- and i really intend to join the honors program most likely by spring but the level of math i am in doesnt affect/prohibit me from doing so, right?
- how do you get into the TAP program for LA? D:
- for connect 4, are the requirements that i just need to be a student from the walnut valley district??
- is it mandatory to take the chem placement test?
- i heard its TOUGH competition to get classes here! and my friend scared me even more today by telling me that now, because mt sac is gonna be so overcrowded and things, i will probably only get to transfer after 3 years or more?!?!?! i sooo fear this!! ToT is this all true??? i really want to transfer right after 2 years ):
THANKS so much for your time ToT !
I’m so nervous about everything now ):

@blackmamba- technically speaking if you major doesnt require any math classes, then you dont need any. but IGETC requires it so you most likely will atleast have basic algebra haha.

if you placed into 180, you can take ANY math class under it.

and no, honors classes do nothing extra for you GPA/registration date wise. sad sad truth. :(

Dont worry about june 11, to put it in perspective for you ive been here for 1.5 years and i only got May 26. you are only a week or two behind. but of course its a huge diff. but seriously make a lot of back ups… summer isnt as bad as fall/spring. GL!!! :D

@sunnybanana - awwww dont worry, yes you can take it again. orientation is just orientation. it has nothing to do with anything outside of orientation haha. And if im wrong please correct me…but its to my understanding that that same tests cannot be retaken until 3 months have passed. BUT after 2 weeks you can take a different placement test, just not the same.

since i am probably going to retake precalc or even trig sob for a fall session, in the spring, can i go into calculus business at least? :O

*yup. think about it like a ladder. you have to take lower steps to get to the top. im really bad in the math department so whatever pre-reqs tehre are for calc busi, you will HAVE to have them completed before you can take it.

how bad does taking such a low math class look on my transcript… my goal is to get into UCLA )': and I’m either going into architecture or nursing…

*doesnt look bad at all.

and i really intend to join the honors program most likely by spring but the level of math i am in doesnt affect/prohibit me from doing so, right?

*nope. i havnt taken ANY math up until this semester (tehe… xD talk about procrastination at its best)

how do you get into the TAP program for LA? D:

*requirements of tap are as followed:

Attain a minimum of 3.2 cumulative bachelor-level GPA by end of the Fall that you apply

Finish most of your major pre-requisites by the end of Fall that you apply

Complete at least two Honors classes by the end of Fall before you transfer

Complete 6 HONORS classes with at least a C by Spring/Summer after you apply

Are NOT majoring in Film, Theatre, Engineering or Communications

Check the TAP box on your UCLA online application

Sign your UCLA TAP Form in Honors by mid February Without your signature you will not be TAP-certified.

keep in mind this info is not updated, but is probably still the same today. what you SHOULD be aiming for to be competitive is a 3.5 or HIGHER GPA. finish ALL your major pre-reqs. complete ALL 6 HONORS. Finish MATH/ENG BEFORE the spring of transfer.

But again…once you are in honors, talk to linda diaz about all this. i know im not really good at making things clear but she can.

for connect 4, are the requirements that i just need to be a student from the walnut valley district??

I honestly dont know anything about connect 4. but like AAWW000 said…you should def call or ask in person. id try talking to high school outreach which is located right next to admissions/the placement test center.

I would think there would be more requirements, otherwise everyone would take advantage of it. (which i hope they do if it truly is)

is it mandatory to take the chem placement test?

nope. it is not mandatory to take any test. but if you dont then you start from the bottom and work your way up. wasting time, money, and resources haha. I didnt pass the chem test. but if chem is still 1/2 years fresh, study a bit and you will pass. I havnt seen chem for…5 years. i do suggest taking it since if you pass you skip chem 40. and go right into chem 50.

the higher you place the better! :)

Wow, been here for a year now … andd I got June 4th as my date. Pretty bad. Are you sure summer is a little better then fall/spring usually?

As for connect 4, yes the only requirement is that you are from the Walnut district. You will get priority registration, and you have to attend an orientation which counselors help you pick your classes right then and there. Pretty neat, if you are from the Walnut area lol.

Also, there is NO math requirement to get into Honors, just English.

I have May 25th registration date for summer 2010 for PCC… and registration started on May 7th. Maybe I should take placement test there just as a backup? If I can get something on June 11th at SAC, then I’ll just drop what I can get at PCC…

Will it affect me getting into honors at SAC? Like if I earn an A at a class at PCC will it transfer to SAC? I dont want to end up taking nothing in the summer and waste time…

@black - ur PCC registration date doesnt seem to be any better than your one at SAC. if it comes down to it then dual register. as long as the course is transferable the units should come over to SAC as well. but id call to make sure.

@AAW000 - yea summer/winter is slightly easier to add classes because most CC students are lazy and go on vacation or dont feel like taking summer/winter. and most ppl will drop once the class starts and they see how fast pace the class is.

whats your name…?

Yea not much better but its 18 days after the start compared to 26 days after the start of registration. haha Alright I’ll call.

You probably don’t know me. Not really involved in school activities, no clubs, or student government. Just go to class, and come home. I’ve only been to the honors center like 2 times, both to see Linda.

I’m more into outside of school extracurricular activities, I started up a business recently, teach English at the local library, tutor in Math, ect. Hopefully that’ll look decent on my application, considering I’m an economics major.

Dainese, I have to take 4 more honors courses by the end of next spring. Do you recommend any good teachers? My experience in honors classes has been great. I’ve taken Economics and Art History so far…

hmm…thats tough…no i cant really haha…

i know 2. olds (eng 1AH) and louie (psych 1AH). but both were extremely difficult but i learned a lot from them that prepared me for the worst of situations.

Ok I have been reading these posts, well scanning them and it sounds that I am in the same boat…going to mt. sac and really confused, want to transfer to UCLA or USC beackup UCI, etc. I went in as a walk in for orientation and I already took my placement tests…got into intermediate math and eng 68, have an appointment with a counselor to pick classes may 25, and I wanted to go into honors program, just not really sure if I can get in now. Currently I have a 3. 46 total gpa and I wanted to take classes over the summer, but I’m going to be really busy, can i gt into honors program? Thanks.

3.46 coming out of high school?
or 3.46 GPA from transferable classes you took at sac?

either case, you can still get into honors.

there are two ways to get into honors
1.) Coming out of high school
-3.5 GPA
-letter of rec/essay

2.) Obtaining 9 transferable units
-3.2 GPA
-letter of rec/essay (waived if you have a 3.5 GPA+)

Regarding the first option, although you have a 3.46 and dont meet the 3.5 requirement, i think that because you are so close that a simple chat with the honors director (carolyn kuykendall) will get you in. Show her although you missed the cut by .4 you can and WILL not let her down. seriously. if she puts faith into you dont fail her, shes the sweetest woman ever haha. prove to her you will do well and she should let you in :D

if i were you, my goal would to get eng 68 over the summer if at all possible. then over the fall take 9 transferable units. keep in mind ENG 68 DOES NOT transfer. BUT the grade you get it in it still affects your GPA.

i hope this doesnt confuse you more, but classes that dont transfer over still affect your MTSAC GPA. but once you get accepted and go to a university, depending on the school some do it some dont, then they ONLY take in your transferable classes and calculate your GPA from there :)

nikki99:

Dainese is right. If you have a 3.46 coming out of highschool, talk to the director of honors, and tell her your situation. I had EXACTLY the same GPA as you, right under 3.5, and the honors director let me in. They are very nice people, and are very lenient. Be persistent, go talk to her in person, and you should be fine.

To anyone wanting to join honors out of high school, one problem I had was that I didn’t get a letter of recommendation from one of my high shcool teachers before the school year ended. So they did allow me to take honors courses, but I had to go back to my high school at the beginning of this school year and get one of my teachers to write me a letter of rec. Make sure you guys ask one of your teacher to write you one before the school year ends!

Dainese:

Ok, i would love to take english 68 over the summer, but my parents and i are going off to florida for a week and during orientation I talked with one of the instructors and she said that i would be missing too much work and the date i’m going is during finals!

Wait, if i got into eng 68 does that mean i can’t be in honors…my friend told me this? Plus how does Mt. Sac work with AP courses, i just took french and bio?
