**OFFICIAL Mt SAC CC TRANSFER THREAD**

yea 18k for 1 semester for me

so depending on how much FA you get…it can be more/less.
keep it mind tahts without living expenses. and if you can find a place for 300, more than likely its either a scam or a really bad neighborhood with 3 other roomates in a small bedroom.

ive seen rooms for 400 and those are okay. but 300 is unheard of…lol you’ll hafta share with lots of ppl to get down to 300.

in some cases FA can cover a lot, but sometimes it wont.
many USC students are paying less than the cost of a UC, but those that arent are obviously paying much more than the cost of a UC lol.

a scam? wow…I never thought people would do such a thing…thanks for info. btw…I heard there’s a main scholarship which anyone enroll can apply to in February? Dainese…they send me alot of scholarship stuff…did you get ever got rewarded? cuz it seems impossible to get at least 1 since there’s so many people applying.

**hey did anyone got a email on their myportal saying “financial aids freeze” ?

^ Yeah I got the email…

there are a lot of scholarships, but i didnt get any cuz i didnt apply to that many. most of the ones that give out the msot moeny are for those in need of it. so i was already opted out for most.

one of the big ones that goes to mtsac for a info session is the norman topping scholarship, 2 years ago 3 mtsac students got it and one was my friend. right now shes going to USC for free :)

if you need help with scholarship stuff, talk to desiree in the FA deparment. she used to work at USC in the scholarship department so she knows all about that stuff.

thanks…I’ll definitely will go for a look…man you know so many people in different areas…and I’m still just trying to survive through a semester…Mid-term Tomorrow for Music Appreciation.

haha, dont wrry. we all start at the same point and i was just like you.
you’ll start to build relationships and connections when you become more active in school and learn to get around a lot. but focus on school first lol.

best of luck on your midterm. :D

Sooo, I’m in a bit of a predicament. Recently, I found out that I was withdrawn from UCR due to a D grade during my senior year even though I had a medical condition and was out for weeks! Sigh… now I have no other choice but to go through the community college route. However, all community colleges have already started. I live in Riverside and I want to attend PCC… so that will be a far drive for me. but whatever, PCC is a good CC and has an honors program that I can get into. The thing is, I want to be able to transfer out in a year. I know you need 60 units… so does anyone have any advice for me? Won’t I have to apply right now if I want to transfer in a year? How would they see my grades if I were to apply right now? And I would have to sign those TAG/TAP papers right now too? I know… I have a lot of questions! but it’s only because UCR kicked me out last minute and I was SO set on going there that I never researched CCs.

hmm…interesting situation…you sure you cant talk to UCR about it? cuz that seems stupid to kick out a student due to a medical condition. if anything they should just let you retake that class at a CC or something…

id try to talk to a UCR counselor/head honcho first.

but if you want to transfer to a UC within a year you need AP credits.
without AP credits, this is basically really really difficult.

i dont think you will be able to TAG/TAP within 1 year without AP’s either.

but if you do have AP credits and qualify for honors…register at PCC
join the honors program, use this semester to build up some ECs (like clubs, volunteer, internships etc) then once winter comes around start getting classes.

you will have to apply fall of 2011 i think cuz ull want to get accepted for fall 2012.

even with AP credits, applying right now…would seem dumb to me. cuz u have no CC credits, are behind a semester, so theres no way you can get 60 units, and you have nothing under your belt as of now.

feel free to ask more questions
but i suggest you get done with PCC, join the honors program there and talk to a counselor there. they will have lots of advice for transferring. Im not an expert…but im helping to the best of my knowledge so dont take it 100 percent legit.

but seriously…UCR is whack for kicking you out for a medical condition. i think there should be some disability protection for you. i know if you have a medical condition in college, by law, they must abide by it. you can take finals years later if you wake up from a coma lol

and why didnt your hs cut you the same kind of slack? they are the main source of the problem. they shouldnt be giving D’s to due to a medical condition.

@blueskin…I was just like u… Except I got in for pre-med and got that finial notice a bit earlier than u.

PCC is good…especially easier to get in Eng1A…which I’d the main ticket class to get other classes… You’ll see what I mean. I suggest if u really want to go to PCC… Take the placement test as soon as possible… That’s what I did when I got the news in July. And just go on from there… It’s too late for fall semester… When did u the notice … Cuz I got a phone call instead of email

btw…are you sure you talked to your counselor in UCR…because they actually offer me a chance to go back as A NONSCIENCE major once I complete one semester in a community college …and less than 30 units if I remember correctly. And you’re going to be a Sophmore once you enter UCR. They told me it’s a unique process different from the normal Transfer application. I actually have the number, which they told me call them in around October and tell them my progress in Community College if I want to go back. Check your email.

Bummerr… I took 5 AP classes (compsci, spanish, chem, stats, calc AB) and only passed two of them. I also took a bunch of honors classes but unfortunately they don’t count for anything! This sucks because I worked hard in high school and now I have to start all over just because of some disease I got at the end of my senior year. So yeah, I am most definitely talking to my counselor. I have to wait until the weekend is over to talk to her though. I sent an email explaining my med condition AGAIN and asking respectfully if I could anyway regain admission. ughh UCR is mad strict this year. They usually let people off the hook for this kind of stuff. I’m basically screwed at this point!

So yea, 2 AP classes… spanish and compsci that I passed. Wait, do you get any credit for just taking the class and passing it? or do you have to take the ap exam and pass it to get credit? If I get credit for just taking the class and passing it, I’d be set to transfer in a year! How many credits would 2 AP classes be?

I also took a sociology class during one summer which is UC transferrable but is only worth 3 credits. Does that count towards my 60 units?

Aw man, so I’d have to wait until the winter to sign up for classes? That sucks… Now I have to find something productive to do during this time. I’m an engineering major btw. I wonder if they have any internships for freshman like me?

Ugh, UCR just totally ruined my future. My last resort is speaking to the admission counselor first thing monday morning… but I highly doubt they would do anything. I even talked to my HS teacher about it before he gave me the D but he said he couldn’t… sigh…

For the time being, I might as well plan out what I need to do at PCC. Do you think 18 units is too much for a semester? How many units is bearable for winter?

@Churroke Yeah I got the notice about 2 weeks ago. They gave me a call. Are you still going to PCC? Did you ever try to appeal the school to get back in? Alright, so I should take Eng1A first? I took placement tests already for UCR. Do you think those would transfer over to PCC

Oh and thanks so much Dainese and Churroke. I really need the help and support

Whatttt?? they actually offered you to go back?? Yeah, I appealed already but it doesn’t seem like they even read my letter. Think I should just talk to her on the phone? I have what they sent me I can show you.

OH, and I sent an email to change my major to sociology a week ago cause I know that is a easy nonscience major. They haven’t gotten back to me about that yet. My original major was Mechanical Engineering B.S. + M.S. … yeah crazy major, i know. LOL maybe thats why they denied my appeal?

I’m going to Mt.Sac actually. Although I have a friend this year from PPC transferring to UCLA as a Econ Major, MT.Sac has a higher transfer rate. But whatever fits you the best of course. And in CC, I’m going out as Engineering Major too, so we’re on the same boat.
Not calling you insane, but think of Winter Class is like “summer school” IN HS. So I think 2 class at MAX FOR WINTER.

I’ll let Dainese do the rest…he’s the best one in the forum. I’ll study for my MidTerm now.

Sorry if I’m like spamming this thread… it just feels like my life turned upside down!

Churroke how long ago did this happen to you??

Mann, I would totally take up on that offer of going back to UCR as a sophomore. My admissions counselor is Linda Manning. Who’s yours? Do you have the same? And what was the number they gave you? Maybe I could work something out if I called them. Idk, I’m freaking out right now. haha sorry so many questions!!

Dainese - THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your wisdom, patience and advice in this thread. Without it, I don’t think my son would be enrolled at MSAC now with three transferable classes and three music classes (he’s a music ed/performance major.) He graduated high school in May and then two days later left on tour for the entire summer with no access to the internet. So basically I was left to enroll him in classes and thanks to you I was persistent on getting on waitlists and he ended up with physics, spanish & life management.

He also took the english placement test again a couple of weeks ago. He had only qualified for english 67. When he took the test again he asked if he could type it and he was allowed to do this. Now he’s qualified for English 1A!! I thought this information might help others out there who need to retake the test.

Yeah, seriously Dainese. You’re so awesome about all this stuff. Thanks again for the guidance. I really do appreciate it!

@ Churroke: Mt SAC has a higher transfer rate than PCC?

whoa lots of posts…

@blueskin - im not really good with AP credits, other users that view this thread will know. if they dont answer your questions in time, PCC certainly will :)

your 3 units from soc should transfer

18 units is a lot. but since youve done AP and honors, you may be able to handle it. just try it out and drop the class if u cant handle it. i took about 14-15 a semester. i did 17 once and nearly died haha. but i never did anything productive in hs either sooo that may be why (graduated with a 2.07)

for short intersessions like winter/summer usually 1-2 classes is enough. i take 1 cuz its really fast paced, but a lot of honors students will pack on 2. if you want to transfer in a year, you may be looking at 20+ units during the semester and 6-8 units during intersession.

i dont think placement tests transfer, but ask PCC to make sure…every CC is different.
if not, take the placement tests at PCC asap :)

and dont wrry, things will always work out for the best. i know its cliche, but its true.
who knows…maybe you’ll do really well at PCC and go to caltech or MIT. possibilities are endless.

as for talking to your hs and UCR, id talk to the biggest authority you can reach.

@lightness - hey, welcome! :smiley:
great classes that you managed to grab. your a great parent for doing your son such a huge favor haha. and thats pretty awesome that your son placed into eng 1A (saved him a lot of time). i encourage him to join honors if he hasnt considered it already

any idea as to why typing it made it better for him? different writing style etc?

and where does your son want to transfer? music/performance is pretty cut throat. but if your son is already on tour, he seems to be heading the right track haha. congrats!

@blackmamba - yup, i believe so. SMC has the highest without a doubt. the reason mtsac has a hgiher transfer rate than PCC is because there are so many more students attending mtsac. PCC is almost empty compared to mtsac haha

Dainese -

The English placement test is timed. If you can type relatively fast then you have more opportunity to proof read your essay and move things around or change sentences completely.

He plans on transferring to Cal State Fullerton or Long Beach. He plays french horn, so there is a little less competition. He’s meeting with a counselor soon so I’ll let him know to ask about the honors program.

Thank you again for all your effort.
