Official sept 2012 ACT thread

Right, but it said distinct PAIRS of positive integers.

(2,2) is a distinct from (3,2) which is distinct from (2,3) which is distinct from (3,3)…

It didn’t say that “m” and “n” had to be distinct from each other.

Put it this way: If someone asked you if (2,2) and (3,3) were distinct from each other, what would you say?

thats why im crying for my mistake…
i swear i was so confident coming out of this now im just crushed

Steven, I’m not 100% that what I’m saying is correct. In fact, I thought that I was completely wrong at first. However, I am 99% sure that the question asked about distinct PAIRS. If that was the case, then my interpretation of it is technically correct. But, you never know with the ACT. They are crazy.

I made two stupid mistakes on the math section…
I got a 36 on the june test.
now i prolly will get 33.
with the ridiculous science portion… ■■■

Eng 36=-0
S=-1 or -0
M=-0 or -1

I don’t think the question ever said distinct pairs, just where m and n are distinct integers…

@stevenlee973, I am on the same boat as you if that is the case. I got 36 on math and science in june and took the test again hoping to get a 36 overall, by improving my reading and english scores but it looks like my reading/english scores flip flopped with my math/science

What kind of score do you think I might get for reading if I got, say, 7-8 questions wrong? Normally, I’d think 28-30 (hoping for the 30). I had 1.5 mins left by the time I got to the last passage, so I just found the first answer and put B for the rest, hoping I’ll get at least 2 out of the 9 from that. Other than that, I felt that the rest of the reading and the other tests went fairly well (missed at least 2 on math, what was the actual answer for the mn one? I keep seeing mixed answers).

Overall, I’m thinking I got around:
English: 34
Math: 34
Reading: 28-29
Science: 33 (I really didn’t find this too difficult until the last passage and even then I think I got most right, hoping for a nice curve too).
Writing: 10 (I got a 10 on my last one, which I didn’t think was too good, and I felt this one was better)

Honestly, I’ll be happy with anything over 31 composite, which is what I got in April. Hoping for a 33+.

Thinking I’m going to get a 34 composite. If there’s a higher power, 35.

Hoping to get at the very least a 30
Reading- 34-36 may have missed one or two
English- 32-35 definitely missed one but may have missed more
Math- 28-32 ran out of time and guessed on 3. Know I got at least 2 wrong.
Science-26-30 guessed C/H for last 9 but felt pretty confident about the rest. Anyone remember if they got any Cs for the last 9 questions?

Really hoping for a 32 though

took the act today and ****ed up…
borrowed my moms watch because mine was out of battery. According to the watch, I had 15 minutes to go and 20 questions remaining - on pace - but apparently the watch was 10 minutes slow and there was really only 5 minutes left. Long story short, I had to guess AAAAAAAAAAAA for the last 12 questions… AND ENGLISH IS MY FAVORITE section

good thing I am a junior and I still have 2 more cracks at it

I did poorly on science… any tips for taking science besides going directly to the question?

English: 30~32

Math: 35~36

Reading: 27~31

Science: 35~36

It seems on this forum that Science section was the hardest, but I thought Reading was hard…I just do not see the point of understanding author’s memoir of horses and other blah blah blah

what composite score do you think this will be?
English: -3-4
Math: -0
Reading -0
Science: -5

Hoping for:

English: 36
Math: 35
Reading: 33
Science: 27

Composite: 33 (please, please, please be at least a 33…)

I thought that the science section was decently easy but only if you had taken AP Bio and AP Chem.

Prediction:

English: -4 to -6
Math: -1 or -2 (Depending on that distinct pairs question)
Reading: -1 or -2
Science: -1 or -0
Writing: 10 - 12

Just my predictions for the curve
English: Math: Reading: Science:
75: 36 60: 36 39-40: 36 38-40: 36
74: 35 59: 35 38: 35 37: 35
73: 34 57-58: 34 37: 34 36: 34
71-72: 33 56: 33 36: 33 35: 33
69-70: 32 55: 32 35: 32 34: 32

With all of the horror stories I have heard about science this test date, I’m really glad I took my last ACT in June. Bullet, consider yourself dodged.

Eng:-1
Math -0
Reading:-3
Science:-14

English: -0
Math: -5 or 6
Reading: -0
Science: between -7 and -10

I would reeeally like a 34, but I’d be happy with a 33. Hopefully I didn’t stay the same or drop…

Is that 36*#correct/total questions in the sections bs or is there some truth to that pre-scaling?

I also do have a question. I think I did really well on Science and Mathematics section, but I did not really well on Reading section (did moderately on English).

If I get high 30s on both Science and Mathematmics section and 29~31 on English section, what kind of scaled score should I have on Reading section to get composite score of 33~34?

Scores come out tonight!
