Official Stanford SCEA 2017 Deferred Applicants

@iman123194
hahahahahhahahahah I’m assuming you took the opportunity to ask her how she got in

@Iman. I love you? haha.

I slept with a guy who goes to University of Texas El Paso on NYE. Jealous?

Did anyone receive a letter from Stanford after the admission decision email?

@thm. Nope.

@Engineer95: Recruited athlete + legacy haha

@thm, did you??

@Aery, no, but I thought everyone was supposed to receive letters after the initial email. I guess not…

Nahh, only accepted REA applicants received letters.

How has everyone’s deferredness been?

I am legacy - ie i am an alumn and my son got deferral - good app but not brilliant. National Merit Commendation, Good SAT and GPA. He has some robotics, science internships and projects, lot of sailing and trekking and MUN in extras. There were three other legacy students from my area - all of whom got rejected. The one who got accepted is not legacy. So dont know if legacy counts!!

@xctrackrunner, how did you convey your passion for Stanford as the first choice in your update form? Because the form does not provide a specific question for it. My sons SAT is 2250 + 800 in Physics and math subject tests, 750 in bio subj - his GPA is 3.9 unweighted - he can improve his first term grades for sr year as he did have a dip in his jr year. Do you advise a visit to campus and a desperate plea? What updates did you send? Thanks

@canon400

I guess that since your son applied SCEA then that shows demonstrated interest.
I also read on the internet (so it must be true!) that Stanford doesn’t value demonstrated interest that much.

If he has a GPA of 3.9 unweighted, then the dip in junior year couldn’t have been that bad ;). Besides, showing the improvement in senior year is a great thing.

It is a bit of a mystery how they re-evaluate people. For example, in your son’s case would they say “oh look, his grade dip was just a temporary thing, all is good, accepted”? Or do they put people back in the pile and just do a total re-evaluation?

@canon400 - This is harsh, but Stanford doesn’t care if it is your son’s first choice. It is Stanford. It’s tons and tons of people’s first choice. Almost everyone in the SCEA pool will have Stanford as their #1. It sounds like your son has fine numbers but his EC’s didn’t stand out, but deferred applicants have a pretty good shot so you never know!

My deferredness got much better yesterday when I got a likely from Yale! I am absolutely over the moon about Yale, but it just doesn’t add up, being deferred from Stanford and accepted to Yale in less than three weeks… Oh well! Yale has been my #2 choice for awhile, but the LL might bump it up :wink: I think there’s something to be said for being wanted by a school, I mean Stanford is very take-it-or-leave-it and Yale is paying for me to fly out and visit…

Congrats Clairebear on Yale YES-W! Parent of SCEA admit here and I have been following along, hoping for good news for you guys. We are from the same neck of the woods as well, so to speak, so we are extra happy for you, but don’t give up on Stanford just yet. The likely from Yale after the deferral at Stanford does add up for a STEM girl, for sure. Yale really goes after applicants like you because they are not known as a strong science school in the same way as H,P, S, M, C…(thus they show the love early to show those applicants what they have to offer first) not that they don’t have wonderful programs. From what I have been told, YES-W is great and a wonderful recruiting tool. It is a good feeling to be wanted, and only 1/100=WOW!!! Congratulations!

@Critter. Thanks! I’m really excited for Yale, but I’m still holding out hope for Stanford–if for no other reason than travel considerations (it’s been a hell of a time booking a flight to CT, whereas I could drive to Stanford)

Wow clairebear29!! That’s fantastic-- congratulations.

Congratulations, clairebear29!

I’m betting that ALL of you Stanford Deferred applicants will have lots of exciting options come early April. ;)

Hey guys,

I too was deferred last December. Over the days, I have been following the advice put forward by past deferred-then-accepted applicants and have noticed that all of them added a note about Stanford being their number 1 choice in their optional update form. Likewise, I too wish to write about this in my update. However, is it recommended to send a Why Stanford? essay in the form or is a simple 1 or 2 lines note sufficient? Thanks!

Like I know anything, but I’d suggest just going wherever the wind carries you. I talked to my regional admissions officer and she told me this is not a space for new essays; however, if there’s something you feel like you need to elaborate on, my adcom made it clear that you can spend as much time going into depth as you need. I wouldn’t tailor it to what you think they want to hear…just write what you want to say (whether it’s in two lines or two paragraphs).

My thoughts are: the more you write, the more they really get to know you, the more of an informed admissions decision they can make. Personally, I wrote a pretty fat update form. I mean, anything you send via optional update, they’re going to review. Just don’t be repetitive or excessive. It’s a balance, bro.
