$$$$$ Official Thread - Admission into NEOMED BS/MD Program (Fall of 2016) $$$$$

@dreamed - Thank you! And only 3 things surprised us in the packet.

  1. the dates & times are already assigned. There’s no choosing Jan or Feb weekends & it specifically say they will not change those assignments, even for weather issues.

  2. the UG interviews are at the respective UG campuses, not all at the NEOMED campus. We visited this fall & listened to the entire program but apparently we both missed that. The way it was presented led us to think all the interviews were all at Neomed & was kind of like speed dating, but for a BS/MD seat. Not so.

  3. apparently there’s more paperwork to fill out for YSU. We haven’t looked at them very closely yet, but it looked like another essay (?) needs written & another 2 look like recommendations need to be filled out. Not entirely sure since we really didn’t get too much past the Happy Dance stage of getting invited to interview before proceeding to celebrate! Lol

@jumbletumbles - thank you much for sharing

Once we receive the interview letter whats the ratio of folks they would be interviewing to number that will get selected ?

@dvrvarma123 - Last year 214 were interviewed, 104 entered the freshman class this fall.

@all who have received the Neomed packet- does the packet from Neomed contain the cost of attendance at each UG college ? Or the cost of attendance at Medical College?

Does the packet mention the UG courses BS/MD students would take at each UG college? Is there a place to check their semester schedule etc while in UG? Spring breaks etc

@dreamed regarding courses It doesn’t say anything in the packet. I think you can find this info on neomed site somewhere under curriculum.

@dreamed - you brought up a point elsewhere that got me thinking. FAFSA time is coming around the corner.
Does anyone happen to know if each of the 3 UG schools need to be listed on FAFSA individually or if, like the application itself, there just a single code to note for NEOMED’s 3 consortium schools?

@jumbletumbles - I think it is each UG college for the BS portion of studies but will need to confirm with the colleges.

We called. Each one is sent FAFSA individually.

@dreamed see if this is what you are looking for the courses, but need to be confirmed with the respective UG colleges

I wonder how much & where the curriculum might be adjusted in order to take into account the new MCAT’s shifting of focus on different subjects. I assume they’d like to have their UGs all be successful with the new testing format, of course. So it’d only make sense for the curriculum to reflect the expectations of the MCAT’s new prerequisites, without adding more to the current curriculum. Will be interesting to see if & how medicine & new doctors are different as a result of this.
This may also be the biggest reason Neomed is evolving out of a 6yr program & into a 7 or 8 yr program too - specifically to be able to ADD the extra non-science prerequisites without having to take any of the science courses out. Considering the current course load, it’d be very difficult to add much to the already heavily loaded 6 semesters.

Does anyone know, if the student decides to change direction after completing their 3 years, does the UG college grant them their UG degree or do they have to stay one more year to complete the 4 years o UG which they would in traditional track ?

Does anyone know if the student wishes to apply another medical school after their UG and Mcat scores have been received, does NEomed stop them from applying elsewhere or take their seT away at Neomed ( if they applied elsewhere)

This is a 7 yr commitment and I want to be totally sure before there is no turning back

Wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !!

@dreamed - the ILS degree is only for BSMD students & even that isn’t given to the students until they graduate from the med school part. It’s given at the same time. So technically, you wouldn’t even have a college degree at any point during medical school. The people I’ve known who have dropped from their program have just translated the coursework completed into another major like Biology or switched to something completely non-medically related. Of course, something like Biology will probably have another set of Major & elective requirements. So whether you fill out those requirements really depends on the Major switched to & at what point in the BSMD program you drop out. The further along you are, the more likely it may be that you need to stay longer than the expected 4 traditional years.

@dreamed Also, I’ve known 2 people who dropped out of NEOMED’s program (lack of commitment) & then later came back to medicine - albeit 3-5 yrs later than they would have if they’d stayed the course with Neomed.

So all together, no, you can’t take your UG degree w Neomed & apply out to another program. You don’t get the degree until you finish all 6 yrs. You can however, drop out of the program, switch to another major, & then pursue another med school via traditional route. Make sense?

And as of your entering class, it’s a choice between either 6 or 7 yrs. You choose, not the school. I believe your class is the last one that will have the option to do it in 6. After you guys, it’ll be 7 or 8 depending on which UG you match with.

ETA: I did not attend nor graduate from NEOMED (NEOUCOM), but I do have family members who have. So most of my understanding of how the degree stuff works out comes from them. It’d be best to call Neomed once they’re back in session to verify everything is still the same.

@jumbletumbles - thank u
