I got into the Temple Health Scholars Program!
Iām so elated!
I donāt agree with the statement that very few were leaving. I visited Brown in summer of 2010 and attended their information sessions and walked around with a tour guide who was applying to medical schools. The premed tour guide mentioned that several of her PLME classmates were leaving after holding a safe seat for almost 4 years. She said they were changing the rules primarily to ensure students who are being admitted to PLME were aware that they canāt apply out. They changed the rules preventing students from applying out for classes starting in 2011 or so because of the issue.
@texaspg Yes that is all true, but very few actually do so each year. Most PLME students have taken fewer than standard pre-med requirements, and would not fare well applying out⦠but then that is the beauty of the PLME! Very few requirements. Imagine, only one semester of Orgo, and you can take it Pass/fail! So most stay. If they do chose to leave, here is the policy:
VII. APPLYING TO OTHER MEDICAL SCHOOLS
The mission of Alpert Medical School is to train physicians to meet the future health care needs of our nation. Enrolling a targeted number of students to each class is a necessary first step to meeting this goal. PLME students have the option to apply to other medical schools. In doing so, they will be withdrawn from the position being held for them in the Alpert Medical School and will no longer be considered a matriculating eight-year PLME student.
However, they will have the option of applying to AMS via the standard (AMCAS) route, in which case their application
will be considered alongside other standard route applicants. Individuals are asked to notify the PLME Office of their intent to āapply outā by September 15 of their senior year, or by September 15 of each year they are on deferral. Students should know that the Office of the Associate Dean of the College for Health and Law Careers will provide the PLME with the names of PLME students applying to other medical schools at the start of each academic year.
You should also realize that there is a bit of a culture on campus of PLME-jealousy amongst non-PLME premeds⦠so be careful taking the word of a non-PLME pre med about the program!
@Supergirl5 Siena by email or snail mail?
@ak18ok Congratulation. My S got in too @stdmedsch Temple Health Scholars Program
@texaspg For more specifics about the Brown PLME program and the exact undergraduate requirements:
@tunetheday snail mail
@Supergirl5 do you live in New York area?
Do most students that rejected from NW HPME post-interview get into Northwestern UG?
@fboro16 I think last year was the first year that people got into nu undergrad but not the program.
@tunetheday yes
BU decisions coming out on 19th.
Does anyone know when the next round of RPI/Union comes out? Also, to anyone who got accepted to an Albany program, did your portal change after you were accepted?
@jamini I am not so sure this was the case since I was the only one asking questions of this tour guide after the tour was over about being able to apply out without issues and how many do and she said specifically that the rule was being changed to address the issue of people leaving. Sure enough it changed.
@fboro16 - They have been waitlisting the post interview rejects because they are not always sure if the student will come without HPME. People who are rejected preinterview receive a form asking them to send a note whether they want to withdraw or want to be considered for undergrad.
Received an email saying that Iāve been waitlisted from Brooklyn College BA MD along with 30 other students.
PLME: 55 to 65 matriculate each year.
Total PLME applicants:
2019: 2,216 (ED 250);
*Change in EA rules: You cannot opt-out UG if not accepted to PLME.
2018: 2,763 (ED 410).
2017: 2,957 (ED 409).
@ ifnousWHO YEP. Thatās all the same stats I found too. And yes, up until last year there was a clause in the common app for Brown that if u were applying to brown ED for the PLME but did not want to be ED-committed to Brown if you were accepted regular UG but not PLME, you could opt out and roll into RD. Now they ask that if u arenāt interested in committing to Brown ED unless you get accepted to the PLME that you just apply RD. It was too complex for the admissions offices of both the UG and the med school to manage the way it was and still have decisions by mid Decrmber.
Correction: The ED applicant number drop was for 2020.
PLME: 55 to 65 matriculate each year.
Total PLME applicants:
2020: TBA (ED 250);
*Change in EA rules: You cannot opt-out UG if not accepted to PLME.

2018: 2,763 (ED 409).
2017: 2,957 (ED 374).
Yeah sorry I didnāt look so closely either. But yes, that is precisely why it dropped⦠More applicants to PLME chose to apply RD this year for that reason. The PLME committee prefers it this way, so that they have more time to consider the applications. And those who do still chose to apply ED are showing they are truly committed to Brown either way⦠PLME or not⦠Which helps the UG admissions side with their decisions as well.
only 16 more days until BU decisions are out!
