Official Thread for One-Year Transfers

@dc:
i know they give us an extra year if we’re double majoring, but otherwise i’m not sure…

1 year transfer eh? I could sure do 30 units per semester, if the class schedule permits. I doubt I’ll be getting an A for everything though. Well, goodluck to you guys.

Haha, I’m happy to see there are other 1-year transfers out there! I thought I going into “unchartered territories”.
I only passed 2 AP tests (World History and English Language/Lit), but I started taking night classes at my local CC when I was a Sophomore in High School so I’ve caught up. I’m applying to UCLA, UCB, UCSD, and UCSB for Fall 2010 (History).
I think that trying to get your g.e. done in one year is a great idea, you just have to decide on your major quickly, that’s all.

yeah mdub at my cc any professor or counselor i talked to would give me weird looks when i said im trying to transfer in 1 year. I feel like if a student knows what they want to major in and are willing to put in the effort it isnt a big deal hopefully it works out for all of us…i have noticed that since we are putting in more effort to transfer in 1 year rather than 2 or even 3 we tend to have higher GPA’s i feel that the UC’s will realize we are not only willing to work harder but are far more motivated than our peers

my hypothesis is 1 yr students will have a higher acceptance rate, hopefully it bodes well.

Hate to tell you, but your hypothesis is incorrect.

Compared to normal transferees, the UC’s only gets to see one semester’s worth of grades for one year transfers. Therefore, the UC’s are inherently taking more risks if they choose to admit an applicant based on such a short track record.

Most of us who are “one year transfers” also have summer classes, AP exams, and/or concurrent enrollment classes for UCs to see. Personally, I have one 5-unit summer class and 7 AP exams (six 5’s, one 3), which provide a better “track record” than just my fall semester.

I see girlyshout’s point.

This isn’t worth much but if I were to consolidate all my classes into one year… I would have never found the ECs I’ve done or gotten acquainted with the faculty. I think that alone was worth my one extra year.

Plus, I like to spend time with my family and hangout with friends or do something fun… I’m pretty sure you one year transfers find some time in your 22 unit+ workload but I think that’s impossible/not favorable for me since I’m gonna have a tough time balancing that. I just love to have a little fun. Just another perspective if someone is reading this and thinking about doing one year transfer

But anyway, good luck you guys, you guys seem to be hardworking and dedicated so I wish you guys the best.

Gah, I also applied as a first year transfer, and I’m deathly afraid of having to spend another year at a community college.

Although I’m an intended Political Science major, I applied to Cal as a Political Economy major, as it has almost twice the acceptance rate. What I’m worried about, though, is the fact that I will not have completed a single major pre-req until spring. And even though I do have a 4.0, it only reflects the 18 units of coursework taken during fall (I wasn’t able to get courses during summer, Mt. SAC has far too many students). To make it worse, my E.C are really sub-par.

I guess I’m just hoping for some freak accident in the admissions office…

edbraga, we appreciate your perspective but let’s try to not let this to devolve into “why to NOT transfer in one year”. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! People who are on this thread already know the downsides and we’re doing it anyways, and those who don’t realize the disadvantages probably need a little common sense!
Anyways, most of us already have lots of units (I had 28 before I started college from a summer class and 7 AP’s) so our schedules aren’t that awful. Very few people try to transfer in one year without some credits to begin with.

@ cpbbookworm okay, okay, I’m not gonna give you guys a hard time lol

Good luck!

i started with 74 quarter units…but i’m going way over (total ~135 quarter units) this year…and i believe i found some great EC’s which i started looking for senior year of high school, though i do agree that i have not had the time to develop the relationships with my professors that i would like to have (i haven’t gone to a single prof’s office hours due to lack of time :[) but i make time to hang out with friends (at least an entire day a week, and i see most of them every other day) and family may be a reason i want to transfer in 1 yr >_> i love my family, but 18 years with them has been enough to earn me a break now i think

Hey Y’all,

I was a one year transfer way back in 2007. I will also be graduating from Berkeley this spring.

So if you need help/advice, PM me. Oh. Intro:

UCSC, 3.8. Lots of CC credit and AP credit.

From what I see, people are concerned about taking a lot of units as well as EC. Be sure to balance out your stuff. Plus, don’t worry now. You can’t do much until you hear back from schools anyway. Good luck!

So now that admissions decisions are coming out, let’s keep each other updated . . .
I got into UCSD (Warren College- my first choice because of the freedom in choosing classes) with a 3.85 as a Poli Sci/Public Policy major. Even though it’s last on my list it’s just a relief to get an admission haha
Anyone else gotten anything from SD, Irvine, or Riverside?

In at Warren College - Computer Science.

Waiting on UCLA and Berkeley now.

@cpbbookworm and @ rpicton: Congrats to u both !!!

Nice to see an update from 1 year transfer

Im still waiting for UC decision…my GPA was just ok so UCLA n UCB are quite far reach right now. Hope to get into UCSB

But if UCs dont work out…I will be attending USF :)

Hi guys, do you think it’s possible for me to transfer within 1 year from a community college?

I have AP credit for European History, English Language, U.S. History, and if all goes well this year, Computer Sciece A, Government, Human Geography, and English Lit.

I want to transfer to UC Berkeley Haas, USC Marshall, or UCLA for Political Science.

@ renouveau

I have five AP exams, and am receiving credit for four of them. As long as you take a decent amount of units during your semesters at CC, you should have little problem transferring in one year.

I’ve applied to UCLA, UCB, and UCI; as UCI is the only school that has so far released admissions, I’ve only been accepted there.

Good luck

@Renouveau
u can do it if u put ur mind into it  lol

my Ap score didnt count so I took 60 units in 1 year. It would be best if you can also take summer school and winter intersession then u have less units for fall and spring.
consider what major u want to take then plan out well. check with the website assist.org and ur counselor

i have a question to everyone who’s transferring in one year without any AP credits.
When did you apply to transfer?

here’s my situation.
I have 7 credits from community college that I attended 3 years ago.
I applied to another community college now to start Fall semester at a new school.
If I would like to finish all the process within a year,
do I apply to transfer now with only 7 credits?
So that I will be done with it next year and start going to UC for 2011 Fall?

How did you guys do?

My plan is to do
Summer 2010: 7
Fall 2010: 23
Winter 2011: 7
Spring 2011: 23

and start UC in Fall 2011.
