I’m still waiting, does this mean anything? Btw, I was deffered to RD from EA.

So you were deferred but then accepted with a scholarship? I didn’t know they did that. I thought they defer people who are on the fence (like me!).

Tulane (along with other schools like WUSTL) will also defer you if you have not shown strong interest in the school, especially if you have great stats. While at first blush this seems counterintuitive, it is because these students are the most likely to be applying to even more selective schools and using Tulane as a safety. Like any highly selective university, Tulane wants to use its slots for students that really want to be there.

Accepted with $25,000/year Dist Schol-Honorable Mention. Ecstatic! :)

Am I still considered for financial aid even if I received a distinguished scholar award?

Yes, of course. The way it works is that the amount of the award is added on to your Expected Financial Contribution (EFC), for Tulane only of course. So let’s say that the Total Cost of Attendance for Tulane is $55,000. Let’s also say that your EFC that is determined only from the FAFSA and CSS forms to be $12,000. That would leave $43,000 to be covered by financial aid, but now you have $25,000 in merit aid from Tulane so that leaves $18,000 that Tulane will help you with, fully or in part, through grants, loans and work-study. Of course the EFC number is something I made up, so the real number that you are left with for need based aid will no doubt be different. Also, Tulane does not promise to meet 100% of need. But they usually do, especially for the students with the most promising academic records. At least that is what the situation appears to be to me based on a few years of feedback I have gotten from many students.

FYI, the difference between a need based grant and the merit scholarship is that though both do not have to be repaid, the merit money is guaranteed for 4 years (as long as you maintain grades, stay out of trouble, etc.) while the grant money, like the total need based aid amount, can vary from year to year as your family’s financial situation changes.

Hope that helps, ask if you have more questions.

Thank you for that info!

I have a quick question. I applied in November (mid to late) and have still not received any news. How much longer should I expect to wait (I have seen that people that have applied in December have already gotten in)? Thanks

@raza68: If you applied in November, you would have been considered an early action applicant, and should have received a decision around December/January, and certainly before RD decisions were returned. Your Gibson portal has not been updated either? I would call the admissions office and make sure that your application was completed. Something is wrong; hopefully nothing TOO wrong though! Best of luck!

He would only be considered EA if he applied before Nov. 15 AND checked off EA, so you cannot assume he is EA based on what he told us.

raza68- You might not hear until the end of this month. That is Tulane’s deadline for giving you a decision.

Do you think that this late in the season, when they read an application, they notify the applicant if it’s an acceptance decision, but if it’s a rejection decision they wait until around April 1 to post that in the Gibson account? Of course, this is a paranoid thought…but based on that it seems that lately there have been no posts here about rejections but there have been several about acceptances…

people much more rarely post when they have been denied admittance (maybe I am being too PC, but I prefer that phrasing to “rejected”). The other factor may be that Tulane is holding off on outright denials until closer to the deadline so they can see how the class is likely to shape up, although I am sure those that they know would never be offered admission are told right away.

My D is in the same situation as Raza. She applied on Nov 30 and still hasn’t heard a thing. At first I thought it was because they messed up linking her transcript, but even that has been corrected for two months.

In some respects I am not sweating it too much because I can’t see them giving her enough to make it worthwhile to attend there considering that even a 25k scholarship (which is what I think she will get) will still make it much more expensive than the 2 more highly ranked schools that she has already gotten into.

She applied hoping for one of the full rides but didn’t realize there was a separate app for that.

Congrats on the DHS, scawyer.

Checked Gibson this am . . . nothin’. Checked it again this evening . . ACCEPTED! :)

Does Tulane Defer all Early Applications, or do they reject as well? I’m just curious, as I was deferred to regular admission and have not heard. I am in touch with my counselor who recently emailed me that its been a very competitive year but… he is advocating for me to get in. I wonder if they email everyone that??

@5nonnegotiables: I’m a little confused as to what you mean. Not everyone was deferred Early Admission, some people got accepted, and some were rejected. You should hear any day now if you’ve been deferred. Best of luck!

ok great to know. I had thought that is you didn’t get in Early Admission, you were automatically deferred. So, I didn’t realize that you could get rejected early. thx

Son had checked Gibson last week of February and there was no update then checked first week of March and (it was the 3rd or 4th) his decision had been updated. Son was deferred EA. After being deferred, son sent Tulane the “Why Tulane” essay, one additional letter of recommendation, and mid-year grades (which were awesome) and a personal letter expressing his continued interest and thankfully he was accepted.
