Missouri: Half White, Half Indian
Essay: Common App essay
Why Tulane: Heart-felt and informed.
Rec: Never saw

This is a fantastic day! I do have a question, though. Will the Presidential Scholarship increase my EFC? I still may not be able to go unless I get the DHS, if that is the case. Is the DHS deadline based on post-mark or reception-date?

The DHS is based on postmark, I am 99% sure. It says submit your materials by December 15. To be on the safe side, I would have it arrive by the 15th, FedEx.

As far as the presidential counting as an additional asset, the answer is yes. In other words, it does increase your EFC by the $27,000 you received. Any school will expect your family to pay what it can if there is a difference between the scholarship amount and the cost of attending. So for example, if you family’s EFC was $20,000 before the scholarship, and there is a $28,000 difference between the cost of attending Tulane and your scholarship, you would still be expected to pay $20,000. If you had gotten no scholarship, you would still be expected to pay $20,000.

Some people are confused by this and think it isn’t fair, but of course it is and is perfectly logical. The advantage of the merit scholarship, even if it isn’t enough to decrease or eliminate your EFC, is A) It is guaranteed for 4 years and so no matter how your financial situation changes, this never does; and B) It will almost always decrease the amount of loans you would otherwise be expected to take out, unless of course your EFC is so high that need based aid wouldn’t be offered in any case.

Sorry for the long answer to points you didn’t raise, but this discussion comes up every year and so I was anticipating your or others responses.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]

[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Government, Calculus, Senior English, Senior English, Introduction to Law
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar with Honor
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Club leader for school’s community service club, head delegate at Model United Nations, assistant head coach for JV Tennis, honorary captain and DE for varsity football, designer/founder at iPhone game company, second violin intermediate strings at California Youth Symphony, class senator of Student Council, ambassador for high school
[] Job/Work Experience: None.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Created and ran a free local children’s summer tennis club since 10th grade, member of Tzu Chi Volunteer Foundation (Buddhist community service organization in San Jose), one on one tutoring with students who had autism/asperger’s syndrome, tutor for middle school academic support.
[] Summer Activities: The free tennis clinic and the community service organizations.
[] Essays: Spent months on these essays, consider them my greatest strength.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Had a teacher that I’m close to write one and had my football coach write one - wasn’t allowed to see any of it but I am sure that they’re really good.
[] Counselor Rec: Pretty average, I didn’t get along with my counselor too well and wasn’t that personal or close to her as other students were.
[] Interview: No interview or additional recommendation letters sent in (pretty sure Tulane doesn’t have interview as an option at all.)
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: No.
[] Intended Major: Political Science/Pre-law/Sociology
[] State (if domestic applicant): California
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: Asian American (first generation)
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: High
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
[/ul]Reflection

[li] Strengths: Standardized testing scores, which are obviously a lot higher than my grades and a focus and legitimate passion for community service in which I also submitted a two page reflection of my experience tutoring one on one students with autism and asperger’s syndrome.
[/li]

[li] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: How I really made mistakes in middle school and continued to struggle in freshman and sophomore year by prioritizing video games over academics, and managed to get back on track in junior and senior year with the academic upward trend (if you break my grades down year by year, there’s a huge jump from 2.9 unweighed to around 3.6 weighed) and still working and improving to be the best student I can be. Also learning about hard work both in and out of the classroom in that kind of ‘recovery’ and catch up phase in junior year where I had to relearn everything it meant to be a student, even the basics like taking notes. I also took on chances and huge commitments like suddenly joining the football team in senior year despite being one of the biggest Asian nerds in the school.
[/li]

[li] Weaknesses: Obviously, low cumulative GPA and low quintile, much lower than Tulane’s selectivity and really poor GPA in freshman year.
[/li]

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I put a lot of effort into my application and essays, showed an upward trend in my grades, kind of showed the person past the grades, showed a genuine passion for public service, wrote a Why Tulane essay from the heart and was able to pinpoint the specific features of the school which I loved. I also showed a ton of interest in Tulane in being able to go on a campus tour over October break (long and awful flight I’m telling you) and had attended three of the counselor meetings in the Bay Area (drove down to San Jose Hilton, went to one at school, went to a meet n’ greet) and talked with the counselor a lot about my concerns about applying, like my grades, etc.
[/li]

[*] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: This was SCEA, so will not apply anywhere else and did not and intend to enroll as soon as possible.

eshbeast - congrats! You are obviously a very bright person who was off track academically until last year, then righted the ship and put in a super effort. It’s great Tulane recognized this and I am sure they will be lucky to have you.

Some may consider this a bit premature, but EA decisions should start rolling out soon!

Good luck to all who applied.

[ul]Reflection[/ul]
Strengths: Extra-curricular activities, essay, awesome attitude

What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: None.

Weaknesses: Not the highest ACT score on the planet; lack of major national awards or recognition.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think it had a lot to do with the fact that Tulane guarantees acceptance to Louisiana applicants who apply for EA and meet certain requirements. However, the fact that I was awarded the annual $27,000 scholarship tells me that the adcoms saw a lot of strength in my application (maybe in my essay, with which I was particularly pleased for having spent such little time on it).

I’m ranked 7/524 in a competitive Texas high school, applied EA with 4.0 W 5.33 W, worked 45 hours a week all through high school and still do, NHS, Latin Club member/ historian/academic team captain and JCL competitor, Student Council member, volunteer tutor and 140 hours of service in the school athletic concession stands…

SAT 780 math 670 reading 720 writing, really strong counselor rec and essay about how having a sister deal with addiction made me more accepting of others flaws…

I’m just nervous Gibson says my application has been complete for pretty much a month now…

my bad 4.0 unweighted

hkcraft5 - have to say you seem like a strong admit with Presidential scholarship type numbers. There are a few apps that fall through the cracks every year for no reason other than human error. I would definitely e-mail your admissions counselor (you can find out which is yours on the Tulane web site if you don’t already know) and just politely ask if they have everything they need, regardless of what the Gibson portal says. It is also possible you accidentally applied RD instead of EA. That also happens a few times every year. If that is the case just tell them it was an inadvertent slip on your part and that you intended to apply EA.

I received my actual letter today, and was happy to find that I received a Presidential Scholarship ($27K/yr) and an invitation to the Honors College.
