i could email them myself but i’m sure they’re bombarded with sooo many emails right now. i wanna know if i should appeal too, but then again i’m not sure what else to include that i haven’t already said in my personal statements.
Who told you that it was a lottery for the waitlist admits?
@ nissincupnoodle A UCI admissions counselor.
@physicx19 can you expand on the counselor that told you to appeal for your alternate major? So in the appeal you would say I’m changing my major or say if there’s no room for my major I would like to be considered for my alternative major? What would you exactly say to appeal for your alternate major? I’m going to write my appeal this weekend and I might appeal for my alternate major.
I wouldn’t get too worked up about a lottery system until it’s at least confirmed by two different admission reps. I’ve been observing this thread, among other threads and people seem to hear all sorts of stuff from these admission reps. That’s why when I call and ask my questions, I make a note of the tone and voice of who I’m speaking to, call back later and hope for someone else - ask them the same questions. Unless its something standard (like a question you can find the answer to on their website), I ALWAYS get a different answer. It’s not very consistent among all the reps who answer the phone. Even the UCI rep for my college says a different thing.
@lugi350 They told me if I’m very interested to go to UCI then I should apply for an appeal for my alternative major because my gpa was “low” for engineering. It’s better if you contact them by email to get information about you’re case.
@Eterion Interesting info. These UCI reps are bipolar then. The one I communicated yesterday was really snarky about my application.
@physicx19 What is your alternate major?
According to the stats you’re gpa is in the 25-75th percentile of enrolled engineers so idk.
@nissincupnoodle Mathematics.
They prob. put me on the waitlist due to my fall 2015 grades. I got a W and an overall gpa of 3.0 for that sem.
How y’all doing this weekend?
Lots of anxiety. Finals are coming up, waiting hear back from an internship, and waiting to hear back from UCI. :((
@nissincupnoodle I know you feel =P
Is anyone planning to appeal/petition - or just wait?
@Eterion I am planning on appealing. Are you?
I have two topics that I’ll cover in my appeal: I have finished all my classes for my TAG to still be eligible, including getting 6 As (my professors are okay with signing a document that says I’m on pace to get an A in their class) this semester (4 were major-related classes so I understand why I was waitlisted) and that I got a summer internship at Intel.
Any advice?
@BIMguy - same boat as you dude. Not sure what to write. More so, there’s conflicting information I’m getting from the UCI website, the UC apps website and calling into the UCI Admissions office in regards to appeals. Phone call reps say there’s nothing to appeal if waitlisted, UCI website welcomes the opportunity to w/l, and UC apps site also says appeals for waitlists aren’t accepted. They should make up their mind!
@Eterion that is conflicting because my UCI admissions counselor told me to appeal? I hope it counts because I have been running around getting letters of recommendation from my profs and transfer director at my cc in the midst of finals.
However, the excitement is gone now. But I see that appealing won’t hurt my chances so I don’t want to regret not doing it.
I just declined UCI! I hope someone gets in.
@BIMguy if UCI is your top choice, file the appeal. It won’t hurt (or increase) your chances of getting in off of the waitslist, but it will ensure your application gets at least one more look before all is said and done.
I agree with your statement, and for me the excitement is long gone as well. In fact I SIR’d to UCSD yesterday because I have been disenchanted with the way UCI has handled this whole process. I sent them multiple messages days ago, contacted various departments and left my contact info with questions, and I have yet to receive any type of response. UCSD on the other hand has been the exact opposite. You pick up the phone, they answer. They have addressed all of my questions and concerns to the best of their ability with a good attitude. I can’t say the same for Irvine. If that’s any indication of how the next 3 years will go, I think my choice is clear.
@uisforutah - Congrats on SIRing to UCSD - depending on your major, UCSD is considered more competitive than UCI in a number of majors. Have you been to the campus? La Jolla is a nice community.
@uisforutah Are you going to stay on the waitlist for UCI or has the whole process just left a really bad taste in your mouth?
@Eterion yeah. I’ve been to the campus and like it a lot. Call it laziness, but I really didn’t want to move. I love Orange County that much. I guess two years away won’t kill me though. My major at SD is Physics though, and that alone scares the crap out of me. Just looking at the prof. credentials and feeling intimidating before even stepping foot in the classroom. Lol.
@nissincupnoodle yes, I’m going to stay on the waitlist, but not too confident about my chances. This is a direct excerpt from a message I received from a UCI counselor this afternoon regrading the waitlist; “All Engineering majors are not being considered at this time because of the many number of applications.”
This of course is open to interpretation, but I figured I would share it with the group for the sake of transparency.
@uisforutah It hasn’t past the SIR deadline yet so they arn’t sure how many people will SIR. So hopefull not too many people do.
