[ b]Reflection
[ *] Strengths: ACT
[ *] Weaknesses: EC’s, Lack of Sports, Lack of Awards
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: ACT score, gpa, choice of courses to take
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: rejected at Cornell, deferred at UMich, accepted at Case, waiting for Rose Hulman but I prob got in

[ b]General Comments:**
Hate to say it this way but due to the sheer amount of apps that U of I gets, it’s hard to really show yourself as best you can like with other schools, especially considering UoI doesn’t accept recs. So you really need to show good numbers in ACT and GPA and try to go above the 50th percentile for ACT. Other helpful advice would be to take courses that reflect your choice of major accordingly, otherwise they’ll put you in another major they deem fit. For example, I’ve taken every math class at my school and done well in them + took a summer course so I got accepted under LAS Math. My friend applied for biomedical engineering or something like that (aka the worst ranked engineering at UoI), but since he’s also in AP Physics and Calc III/Diff Eq, they put him into Materials Science and Engineering (aka the 2nd top ranked engineering at UoI). Being instate also helps because UoI has to have students that represent all of Illinois (which is why you hear amazing OOS students get rejected but below average students from deep southern Illinois get accepted). Good luck to all.

Deffered for business
Uw gpa 3.15 at extremely rigorous private school, I.e. 85 is a C 70 is an F etc
33 ACT (E33 M30 R36 S33)
No class rank
Extremely edited an worked on essays, my AP English teacher said and I quote “this is the best college essay I’ve ever read”
Good PS that explains low grades Soph year
Upward trend in grades
Decent ECs a lot of community service hours

If I was going to guess, I’d say the GPA did me in. Still hopeful for February! Do you think I have a chance? Or is my gpa too low?

General Comments:

@Schubes5 you did not mention how many AP courses you took. If you have a good # of difficult AP courses, you will have a good chance in Feb, I think.

I got in Business with a low 86.3 UW GPA and 97 W GPA from a very competitive public school and 32 ACT (34 M, 32 E, 34 R and 29 S), SAT Math II 750, Chem 690. I took 12 tough AP courses, and wrote pretty solid essays (I think). Did a bunch of Finance related stuff like online trading competitions and certificates in Investing and Finance from UT Dallas over summer, and a Leadership course online from Brown. So I got in with a lower ACT than you but with perhaps only a slightly higher GPA.

Hang in there, hope you hear great news very soon.

General Comments: First time filling one of these out, figured I’d add some input. UIUC is my safety school so I’m relieved I got in but I almost feel under-qualified… should have retaken the SAT and SAT II’s. Good thing my school does absolutely nothing for students going anywhere but the local community college.
Anyway, good luck to those who were deferred.
