Hooks: I’ve been doing great in college! Not sure what was going on during high school, but I’ve gotten all A’s so far, and I’ve never been more excited about my success. The thing I’m worried about though is the fact that I retook the SAT and scored lower… I already sent in the score though so there’s nothing I can do at this point. Will this significantly lower my chances?

Hmm… what other info can I provide? I’m Asian, female, an NC resident, and bilingual. I also got a recommendation from a professor that went to both Princeton and Oxford.

Please chance me. I’ve been worrying nonstop for weeks. Why’s April gotta be so far away?!

Transferring From: University of Georgia - Honors College (I think UGA is ranked around 62 right now)
Current Classification: (i.e, freshman or sophomore) Sophomore (applying as a Junior)
College GPA: 3.72
Major: Romance Languages (French & Spanish)
Minor: Chinese Literature (although I probably won’t claim this on the application; if I end up continuing w/ Chinese, I’ll just claim the minor once I’ve met the requirements)
ACT/SAT Scores: 2030 SAT (620 Reading 660 Math 750 Writing) but I don’t think I will send them in… they are above the average transfer scores, but they’re not exactly ‘competitive’
High School GPA: something around a 4.5ish weighted… they don’t take high school grades into consideration for juniors
Extracurricular Activities/Volunteer Work: a bunch of honors societies and activities on campus

what do y’all think?

sorry, forgot to add ‘hook’: I feel very confident about my essay and I’m hoping that since I already attend a decently recognized university, plus I’m in the honors program w/ a good GPA, my app will look good (key word HOPING).

do y’all think I should submit my SAT scores? 2030, as I said above… they don’t take those into consideration though for juniors…

PS - I’m writing the ‘why transfer’ essay and the one about an extracurricular activity… but not the one that asks, ‘is there anything else we should know?’

I really cannot think of what should be written in here… I feel like it’s for people who have medical/family financial reasons for why their failed a semester, etc. Know what I mean? Or am I totally off?

Just gonna post this for others who may have a similar question. For the CommonApp for UNC, I will not be customizing the Personal Essay. If UNC wanted a customized essay, they would have asked for one (as Mitch pointed out). Then again, I’m sure customizing it would not hurt.

how is it even possible to list your reasons for transferring without being specific to the school?

Correct. The additional information section is not meant to be used for another essay. However, if you have had some setbacks such as the ones you listed above then it would be beneficial to explain this under the Additional information section.

If your reasons for transferring (and the objectives you hope to achieve) are a, b, and c, and universities X, Y, and Z offer/meet/help facilitate a, b, and c, then write about how you want to attend a university that offers/meets/helps facilitate a, b, and c. The whole point of the Personal Statement essay (or “Why Transfer” essay) is to emphasize what YOU want from a school and, should a school satisfy your wants, what YOU intend to do once accepted. If you address those issues, then any specifics about the school(s) are usually just fluff.

While I’m at it, let me also mention that everything above holds true even if you do decide to customize your essay. Don’t waste your time (and, more importantly, the admissions people’s time) writing about irrelevant crap - e.g, “UNC is a good school” or “The weather out there is great” or “I like the basketball team” (***?!). Your essay should, again, emphasize your wants and intentions; specifics should be mentioned only if they’re relevant to your wants/intentions and are “very specific specifics”.

For example, I plan to major in math and (at the very least) minor in philosophy, and I want to attend a university that facilitates my interests in mathematics/philosophy by offering a challenging, diverse curriculum and several research opportunities; I’m particularly interested in the foundational issues of mathematics and the philosophical problems that arise from them. Asides from offering challenging/distinguished/diverse math and philosophy programs, UNC also happens to be one of the few universities that offers an undergraduate course in the Philosophy of Mathematics. UNC also offers several courses in advanced logic, set theory, etc. - more than other comparable universities. This is something worth mentioning.

If you can’t get around that specific in your essay, then, personally, I would reconsider writing a customized essay. They’ll probably get annoyed and think you’re just pandering.

I never said that I could not get around the specifics in my essay. I meant that the specifics in my essay make it THAT much better. I discussed what I wanted to do there and exact programs SPECIFICALLY AT UNC that were created FOR these specific goals. Like you said, a school that meets your objectives. BUT HOW does it meet your objectives? I called UNC today and spoke with an admissions officer. She said it is perfectly fine as long as I am not submitting it anywhere else.

Your response was correct and I am sure that you have worked up a very convincing essay. Discussing your objectives is definitely what they are looking for. However, specifics, although clearly not required, CAN help to eliminate vague, although fluid, prose. For example, if I were in your position (and this is not a suggestion that you SHOULD/need to do this), I would discuss:
the areas of math that I am interested in and try to quote specific teachers who focus on that area of study
specific programs at UNC that would give you great hands-on experience with your major
certain advancements that UNC has made in that area, or perhaps a notable alumni who has distinguished himself/herself in the world (has won some award) whose career is identical to your future goals

Again, this is not necessary for your essay to be golden. I was just pointing out how it can actually strengthen your essay, and certainly not annoy admissions, if you state EXACTLY which program, WHAT you plan to do with it, and HOW it would benefit you.

alohomora - I think you may have misread my post, which is my fault for not being clear. Just the first paragraph was directed toward you. I was only trying to answer your question, and I didn’t mean to come off patronizing or crappy. I actually agree with everything you mentioned in your post, and I definitely wasn’t trying to persuade you one way or another so far as the issue of customizing your essay goes - and, for the record, I plan on customizing my essay, too.

The rest of the post I included because, after reading several essays from fellow CCers, it seems like a lot of people customize their Personal Statement essays only to include irrelevant, unnecessary info. I was only regurgitating that fact, and I just wanted to give everyone a heads up/reminder not to do that - which most everyone here probably already knows. Also, I included some of my own reasons for transferring only as an example to show, at bare minimum, about how specific you need to get in a customized essay - I think I could have been more clear in my original post when I stated that.

Anyway, sorry again if I came off crappy. I’ll try to be more careful with my wording, etc. in the future.

After you guys submitted your app, how did you sign up for a MyUNC account? I’m having a little trouble doing that.

They’re supposed to send you an e-mail with the instructions, but if you applied in the past, then it’ll be the same login & password.

@Emily - Thanks. Do you know how long that usually takes? I submitted my app 2 days ago.

Is it possible to send the offline forms after the March 1st deadline?

@red

I submitted my application on 1/30. Received MyUNC guest id log in information on 1/31. You’ll probably get the log in information tomorrow or Wednesday.

Thanks Mitch, just got the email like an hour ago.

Btw, on my “To Do List”, it’s showing that they have only received 1 of my 6 transcripts (yeah, I went to 3 community colleges, 3 high schools haha). I sent them all over like a month ago.

Could it be that they just need to update it now that I’ve submitted my app?

Probably best if I give them a call tomorrow lol

Give them some time. It took around 1.5 weeks for them to receive my HS and college transcript.
