I just received a call from a lady in UNC records department saying that they needed my SAT scores. I told her that I had applied a junior and chose not to submit them (as they are optional for junior applicants.) She said that I had applied as a sophomore transfer student instead of a junior! There has got to be some error because I distinctly remember applying as a junior. What’s even more frustrating is that in late Janurary, I went to the admissions office in person to confirm they had received all required materials. They assured me that “I didn’t need to submit my SAT scores because I was applying as a junior.” I am waiting a call back from the Assistant Director of Admissions to see if my application can be changed to a junior applicant. I’m worried that this will put me at a disadvantage because I’m sure they have already made decisions and my application has just been sitting there. I applied to 5 other schools as a junior and got in and I have roughly 40 transferable credits. Any thoughts on this? I’m really upset and freaking out!

what worries me more is that they asked you for your scores this late…which makes me really nervous about the possibility of decisions coming out in two days…

on the bright side, at least they’re contacting you and letting you know of the situation (despite how annoying it is :/), so you have a chance to fix it!

@Hahaha218 I guess you’re right. If decisions are supposed to released either this week or next, I don’t understand how this could not put me at a disadvantage? They’ve already accepted students and they can not even review my application yet. All spots will get filled up and even if I am a competitive applicant, there will be no room left.

ahhh no! what i meant was that i was worried in terms of us getting our decisions anytime this week, but in terms of you specifically it’s a good thing they called you! it probably means that you are a competitive applicant and they want to take you (because if they were gonna rule you out they would have by now and not even bothered to call), but they just need the official SAT scores because that’s the rule! i think it’s a good sign that they asked for more info from you because it means they’re interested!

Also, there was a problem with my recommendation letters being received by UNC. My teachers had submitted the recommendation letters through the Common App but UNC wasn’t able to receive the letters. I had to frantically hand deliver the letters three weeks after the deadline. This leads me to believe it’s a problem with the Common App, I’ve heard about similar horror stories.

i’m just nervous that they haven’t made all the decisions yet so we’re gonna have to wait past the weekend :(

@justblewit According to last year’s thread, the majority of the decisions were released on the notification date, but a small number of applications were still under-evaluation. Also, how can you tell if you applied as a junior? I remember there was this question in common application asking for the student status, so like if you’re applying as a junior were you supposed to put “Third Year?”

@justblewit CommonApp sent the draft version of my essay, instead of the revised one which i explicitly saved but they messed up so trust me i understand haha i had to send a frantic email with the correct pdf from common app. also, did you never see your SAT thing in the to-do list? Cause now i’m worried that i have something missing but that they just never posted it there…

@Otemachi I believe there was a question on the Common App that asked for your current academic year and the academic year you’re applying to. If not, there was definitely a question asking for your status when you create your MyCarolina Portal account.

@Hahaha218 I did see that they were missing my SAT scores on the to-do list but I assumed it was a generic thing. Like I said earlier, I had spoken to someone at the admissions office who assured me that I wasn’t missing anything and my application was complete.

To all: I think that there is definitely serious problems with the Common App. There are glitches are errors which might affect your application and could be no fault of your own. I applied to 5 other schools and had absolutely no problems whatsoever. This is the second problem concerning my application that I’ve had since I applied to UNC in late December.

@justblewit That must be horrifying new after this long wait. I think that is just very irresponsible and unorganized of them. My best advice would be for you to respond to them as quickly as possible and get it all sorted out and confirmed. The best of luck to you!

@uncfalltrans2014 Horrifying to say the least. I don’t understand why they keep using a flawed system such as the Common App, especially when it’s notorious to have problems such as the ones I experienced. I wish they would use a more reliable way of submitting your application like the way NC State does.

@justblew You said that you had around 40 transferable credits. I know that at Chapel Hill and a number of other universities you must have 60 or more credits to be considered a Junior. Without junior status you must provide your SAT scores. Hopefully you didn’t blow it this time :O) (Sorry you walked right into that one)… Seriously I’m sure you will be fine either way and with 5 other schools to pick from you should be proud of yourself!

GOOD LUCK

How do we know if UNC received our professor recommendations? I have really really good recommendations but I haven’t seen any indication that they’ve received it?

@PSIBETAPTKGIRL I have 40 transferable credits as of today. I’m taking 18 credits now and will have 58 by the end of this semester. Additionally, I’m also taking 9 credits this summer. You need 60 credits to be considered a junior when you start at UNC. I got into the 5 other schools also applying as a junior.

I think @PSIBETAPTKGIRL is correct. I vaguely remember that when I called in February about whether I should apply as a sophomore or freshman, ( I will probably have 39 transferable credits by the end of this semester, but I am technically a first-year student, so I put “First Year Student” on my application.), the admissions officer said that what you put on your application regarding your student status doesn’t matter. THEY are the ones who ultimately determine if you have reached junior status or not.

@IchHeisebilhelm In Common App you can check the status of your recommendations. If they are downloaded they probably are received by UNC. Mine weren’t downloaded until three days ago. I called and was told they forgot to download my recommendations because LoR’s weren’t required to complete my application O.O WOW and apparently @justblewit also had some recommendation issues, too.

@IchHeiseBilhelm My suggestion would be to call UNC to confirm that they’ve received your recommendation letters. Don’t be surprised if they don’t have them on file. I had to hand deliver them three weeks after the deadline.

@Otemachi You could very well be correct. However, all the five other instate schools I applied to (within the UNC school system) accepted my application as a junior transfer. It just doesn’t make sense to me, I think there has to be some error.

I just checked and it said it was downloaded. Should I still call tomorrow and see if they have it?
