Official UNC-Chapel Hill Fall 2014 Transfer Thread

Hey guys, first time posting but I thought I’d leave some stats for those who are still waiting
Currently a sophomore at Appalachian State
College GPA: 3.85
High School: had a bad sophomore & junior year but ended at at 4.0 weighted (but got weight listed at NC state to put it in perspective)
SAT = 1870 (definitely not stellar)
No recommendations (was told several times they don’t even look at recommendation letters)
Clubs: NSCS, Health Professions Club, and Exercise Science Club
Volunteer: Started volunteering at a hospitality house THIS semester (so not too much there) ; and shadowed at 2 local PT offices
Member of the Honors College
Wrote a solid essay, explaining my low HS GPA, but again, not even sure they even look at that

At UNC (for undergrad at least) I’m pretty sure it’s all a numbers game. If you have a reasonably high GPA with a few extra curriculars, you should be in good standing.

Best of luck to all and if I don’t accept, I hope one of you get my spot!

Accepted!!

I got my decision, I was wait listed.
Here are my stats:

Out of state & international
Major: Business going in as a Business Admin Major
HS GPA: Around 3.5
College GPA: 3.86

So for us who are wait listed… Do we have to do anything?

@UNCTransfer2014‌ We just have to accept/decline and then wait… if they still haven’t given you an answer after you receive your final grades for the semester you have to send them that as well.

Unfortunately, I accepted the wait list offer too quickly to fully read it.

@SimonK Haha why is it that all of us who were waitlisted did the exact same thing? I wish I would’ve read it now… And just a quick question to anyone who knows. Will us getting a 4.0 or something this next semester improve our chances at all or no? Is the GPA in the next semester really that important? I hope it all works out for us… I so badly want to go!

@UNCTransfer2014‌ Out of curiosity do mind sharing your stats? Mine are:

Applying as a freshman.
College GPA: 3.7
High School GPA: 3.2 (Moved from Europe to USA mid-freshman year. Found it difficult to adapt.)
ACT: 20

Internship at UNC in the Computer Science department.
Letter of Rec: From current UNC Professor
Dad is a current part-time UNC professor. (His classes filled up twice in a matter of minutes)

Quite a few cool EC
including Dean’s List, winning a NASA space competition, and an award for taking tech classes in High school.

Transferring From: Campbell University
Current Classification: Currently a freshman, applying as a sophomore.
College GPA: 4.0 - 36 Credits will be completed.
Major: (Eventually) International Business + Finance
Minor: Possibly Spanish?
High School GPA: 3.6 weighted, 3.3 unweighted
SAT Scores: 1700

EC:
College - Student Govt. Assoc. (SGA), Vice Chair of Elections of SGA, Chair of Elections of NC Student Legislature (Where I won two awards at two conferences for having the best resolution), Members of some other clubs, organized a charity event that took place on UNC’s campus that had over 5 schools attend.

HS - (This isn’t all of them, just the ones I put on the application) Captain of Varsity Swim, came first in my conference’s heat. Student Director - Certified in Final Cut Pro X, 170 hours of instructing others in FCP X, filmed my school’s commercial for WRAL.

I also had a recommendation from the dean of the business school at Campbell, as well as from the Dean of the biology department. I wrote a pretty stellar essay that highlighted the exact reasons why Carolina was the best choice for me. I also come from an international background, only moving to the USA around 3 and half years ago, so I was able to explain away my poor sophomore HS grades and I was also able to show how I improved greatly my junior and senior year (Straights A’s except for one B). I also speak two other languages.

My recommendations didn’t end up getting downloaded, I should call them tomorrow…

@UNCTransfer2014‌ Wow… that is a pretty impressive application.

ACCEPTED

Before you read my statistics and compare them to yours, there are a few things I feel play a HUGE factor. If you plan on transferring, BE INVOLVED IN YOUR CAMPUS. That doesn’t mean join clubs for the heck of it, join clubs and actively participate in them. I feel like that’s a rule you should follow regardless of transferring or not; you’re in college, experience new things! Additionally make sure your essay is the bomb.com! Work on your essay for WEEKS, make sure it addresses the prompt and BE HONEST in it. Don’t BS it because admission officers can probably tell. Honestly explain WHY you want to go to UNC. This includes what you can BRING TO UNC and what UNC CAN GIVE TO YOU.

Good luck everyone!
