OFFICIAL University of Maryland Fall 2013 Transfer

Oh noo I totally forgot about orientation. Need to do that ASAP.

I attended my orientation on June 3rd. I’m so glad that I signed up for the first orientation that I could because it was then, that I was told that in order to finish in two years I need to start ASAP with summer classes which start tomorrow.

Orientation is not as fun as you think, you get there at about 8:30am and it is done by 1:30 p.m…if it is not very busy. I had to deal with the School of Education and it’s a very small school, so very few students. Once you get there you get serve breakfast and you attend an official session with everybody… where somebody just presents facts about UMD… then, you get divided into your official school that’s why you meet with an advisor who has you sign up for classes.

I was shocked about how so many classes were already filled! You will have probably the worst schedule because so many classes are already taken. Oh yeah, and lunch really sucks because they only give you one sandwich and a soda or water…for $106 I would have hoped to get something e better than that. I think its just a rip off altogether because you have to attend orientation so they can tell you what to do! something that I can figure out by myself.

There’s so much stuff that needs to be done besides that:
which is the waiver for health Insurance, immunization forms… Everyone also have to take care of their own financial aid, email account, myUM account and so many little things to make sure that you can start off right.
ALL IN ALL… I didn’t like orientation because all they do is lift up a block off your accounts so you’re able to sign up for classes I really don’t think that it should be mandatory for transfer students especially… I think it should be mandatory for freshmen. So, to everyone who haven’t signed up for orientation yet, please do so ASAP otherwise you would not find the classes that you… need even if you do… you will have to wait another semester…

I wish you all the best let me know if you have any questions I can try and answer it because, I think I did everything I need to do and I’m ready to go to start my summer classes tomorrow.

Hey! When is everyone going to orientation? Is July 24 too late?

I’m going july 17th

Sound cool. Any word on whether most classes have filled up or are still open?

It depends on what classes you have to take. I went on testudo and a lot of mine are still open. I think they save some seats for transfer students though.

I’m going Friday (June 14).

Items to discuss with adviser:
-I didn’t get credit for calc I from CMU (time limit probably?), do I seriously need to retake it at this point? (if so I’m going to take thermo in the winter to retake calc I in the spring). luckily i’m so far into my sequence that none of my classes use math140 as a pre/co-req (instead they use phys260/270, math141/240/241/246, enes220, etc)

-Make sure there is no problem with the articulation agreement regarding credit for enae202 (c++ course + matlab course == enae202, done with c++ course, finishing matlab course first week of July).

-need block lifted to register for required seminar class (oddly enough was able to register
for everything else I need already, probably a glitch, but i’m still registered 3 days later)

-Lay out plan for schedule from now through graduation (engineering sequences are pretty cookie cutter, but figured i’d let adviser know I’ve given it thought)

For those of us who are in regular decision: Is it pretty unanimous that we’re getting decisions mid-June(For those that applied well before the June 1st cut-off)? I’ve spoken with several admission officers and that seems to be the word.

Re: not getting credit for calc I - before you meet with your adviser, go to registrar’s office to check with them about that issue - that’s not something the adviser will know. It could be something as simple as human error.

The adviser will, however, be able to lift the block on registering for classes.

Thanks for the info guys. iOS anyone transferring from MC?

@maryversity
Spoke with registrar’s office and was told the applicable/not applicable decision was made by my advising college and to talk with my adviser about it tomorrow (same advice with regard to how the 2*3 = 3 transfer credit for the aerospace computing class will be counted in toward my total transfer credits).

To be honest I feel them not counting my calc 1 course frees me from an ethical dilemma I had about how to factor in my CMU grades from 12 years ago when it comes time to carpet bomb my resume. Assuming I retake it, I can legitimately say my entire bachelor’s degree is untainted by a person I vanquished long ago.

I am an MC transfer.

Ah, so am I! I took MA116A last semester, and according to the tce website I think it should transfer…

So I was offered two solutions to my calc 1 class. I could either retake it or get credit by exam. The exam counts for a umd grade and is calculated into my gpa, so I’m a little leary of just taking an exam. I am positive I’ve forgotten some esoteric topic or two within the subject. On the other hand, in order to fit calc 1 into my schedule without maxing credits I have to squeeze thermo into the three week winter term.

Anyone know a UMD adviser I could speak to to figure how many of my MC credits they’ll accept? I haven’t heard from them about that.

Hey guys! I have a question about the Math Placement Exam. Awhile ago, I emailed the Math Placement [people] and they told me that because I had taken Pre-calculus that I did not need to take the math exam (excellent, I thought). HOWEVER, I received an email from the Orientation office and they told me that they did not have me marked as taken the test, this was about about 5 days ago. So I emailed the Math Placement office again and they told me:“t is always in your best interests to have the placement test complete. You will not lose any transfer credit awrded. Orientation goes a lot smoother if you do this.” Can anyone shed any light on this because I’m greatly confused because if I take this placement test what will it do when I already know that I achieved/pass the precalculus class for credit (both at CC and UMD) so would I not already be guaranteed to move up to Math140? What if I do poorly on the test–does that mean I take precalculus again even though I already passed and got credit (note, math is not my strong point)? HELP!

Hey, because you have already passed precalc and it is on your transcript, you will get transfer credit for it and your performance on the math placement test should not bear any weight on that. However, if you do mess up the precalc questions then they may reccommend retaking it. I do not think they grade the test as a whole, but grade it based on how you do on each topic, so do not worry about an overall grade on the test. There was some calculus on mine, but they wont expect you to be able to do anything you havent learned. I hope this answered some of your questions, I would reccommend you take the placement for the sake of making orientation easier and because you already have passed precalc it can not hinder you.

Thanks! I’m just concerned because I have orientation this week and this was thrusted upon me and me thinking I didn’t have to take it…of course I haven’t reviewed! I don’t want to take precalc again this would make my third time (once in high school and once last semester) :\ nervous

Dont be nervous, Im pretty sure you will not have to take it over again. You will be fine. :)

SO EXCITED!!! Anyone in CCJS???

PLEASE READ!!!
not to be a buzzkill, but I worked at a CC for almost a year and a lot of you were waiting in anxious anticipation over nothing. If you graduate from a MD CC with an AA you are GAURENTEED legally through the MD CC and public articulation agreement that was made several years ago. This agreement basically states that if you transfer from a MD CC to a MD public university (ie. UMBC, UMCP, UMES, Towson, Salisbury, etc) you WILL GET IN. They legally can’t deny you as long as you’ve fulfilled the requirements for the articulated AA program you were in at your CC. Don’t believe me? Google the MD articulation agreement, or read this page
