Official University of Notre Dame Waitlist News Thread

Well as someone who was worried they wouldnt admit anyone from the waitlist at all, I suppose this is slightly good news.

I agree. I was so worried that they had overbooked. Do you think they’ll start telling people this week if they made it in?

My counselor (also from southern california for those who know her) has an email autoresponse saying shes out of the office for the next two weeks. Whatever decisions being made are being made without her input. My guess is that they already have a list of people they want to offer a spot to. And sorry to say to the person who posted this, but I would think that if some are being told to continue updating the office while others are being told not to, those who are being told to not send anything else probably are not very high up on that list. Just my speculation, though.

The admissions office has stated they had to waitlist siblings and legacies. My guess is they will be getting the first shot at waitlist spaces, followed by the qualified/demonstrated interest candidates with no other affiliation with the University.

I’m glad to hear that they will be taking some people off the list (eagle, I was with you…I was really starting to think they wouldn’t go to the list at all!) I don’t necessarily agree that they will automatically admit the legacy waitlisters first. From what I have heard/read, ND has an unranked waitlist, and your movement from that waitlist is largely due to how much interest/updates you express.

Best of luck, guys. One way or another, we’ll know soon!

Eagle2010-- Sorry, can’t agree with your reasoning about legacies and siblings… Read last year’s waitlist-- a double legacy was not taken off the waitlist and the applicant’s parents had been generous supporters of ND.

I really have no idea what criteria is considered when offering positions off the waitlist… it could be to meet a minority quota, or to fill a vacancy from a certain part of the country… could be on merit. Who knows??? Good luck to all! I am glad that they will be reaching the waitlist, though… and I would guess that there may be a few extra vacancies as Duke takes more and more students and Northwestern opens its door a bit…

Not to mention people double (or triple or more!) depositing.

Krusso-there was a quote from the dean of admissions specifically mentioning how they were “forced” to waitlist siblings of current students. I took that to mean they are going to get an edge at this stage in the game. Also, does anyone know if waitlist decisions are still need blind?

Last year, ND took over 200 students off the wait list. The economy certainly played a role in that number. This year, approximately 160 more students were accepted through the end of the regular decision process. Given these facts and the information in some of the posts above, I would think possibly 75 to 125 students might be taken off the wait list this year. It is really a question of financial aid and who can afford to attend Notre Dame vs. other schools that offer more money in this down economy. Some will choose ND despite the additional cost and others will opt for a school with a lower net cost to them. These are personal decisions that can’t be predicted.

How they rank or choose students off the wait list is a mystery to me. I would suspect that ability to pay, without needing massive amounts of aid, would be a key factor as the class fills up and scholarship and aid dollars dwindle. Probably not the primary factor, but perhaps in the top five would be my guess.

I get the sense that ND admissions is very cautious and conservative in the messages it sends out to waitlistees. They go out of their way to be non-committal. The message conveyed by the individual counselors, though similar, have a slightly different tone. I am afraid that we are all reading too much into the communications from admissions. I know I am, in hopes that my son is one of the lucky ones to get that call.

ND has a very charming conventionality to its communications… Many individual letters on its lovely stationary!

Our counselor told us that they choose based on what they need to make a diverse freshman class. In other words, it is not simple numbers, rather it is based on what students accept and what needs they have. If they have a substantial deficit in female engineers from Ohio, for example (and don’t read into this that they need female engineers from Ohio), they will look at these candidates first to fill this need. There is no ranking of the wait list candidates.

Therefore, it depends on what they need, and there is no way of predicting that demographic. That is what takes longer to get the wait list going.

Also, it’s important to note that ND is need-blind when it comes to waitlist admissions. This is stated on its website/by the counselors. :)

Can someone explain the process. If waitlisted and offered admission does ND call first or send acceptance by mail? Thanks for the info!

Steelers…great name by the way. My understanding is that calls are made first.

Information that I have is that a limited number will be called from the waitlist. Anyone out there know of anyone called as of yet?

Our son has not gotten a call from admissions at this point and has not heard from anyone else on the waitlist that has been called.

Steelers I sent you PM…did you get it?

Spoke with my counselor today. Waitlist decisions are expected within a weeks time.

Steelers…sorry with trouble on PM’s.

Son’s backups are Duquesne in Honors College and Oberlin.

eagle2010

It’s cool that you spoke with counselor. In one of your posts you said she was out of the office for two weeeks. That’s gotta be a relief that you made contact. Good Luck!
Son is waiting here in PA.

I’m curious, for those that are waiting on ND’s waitlist, do you send in deposits to cover yourself to your next choice(s)? Do you lose those deposits if ND takes you? Do any schools allow you to delay your enrollment commitment until you are taken off the waitlist?

Yes I’ve put in a deposit at my second choice university. I will loose that deposit if Notre Dame lets me in and i enroll.

And I reached her by email, not sure why but I think the dean of admission is also out of the office.
