Official USC 2013 Transfer Thread

How are transfers supposed to mail recommendation letters from professors?

There is a form provided by the common app, but does the professor mail it to USC or do I?

Any help is appreciated!

I also have the same question anyhow do we send our transcripts. Does our college and high school have to send it directly or do we request an official and mail it over ourselves?

@katie9-Thank you so much for letting us know about the common app question! I thought it would be okay to customize and tailor the essay to USC if you were only applying there.

I don’t think you should worry about re-taking the SAT. By having 31 semester hours, I’m assuming they are the same as units, they do not value the scores as much.
Best of luck!!

In regards to letters of rec, I don’t really think it makes a difference who sends the letter. If you feel more comfortable mailing then you can mail it or you can give your professor a stamped envelope which he or she can mail.

HS and college transcripts have to be official.

Wait, I don’t think transfers use that letter of rec form. I called the other day and admissions said transfers don’t use that because lor’s aren’t required for xfers, so she said to just have the teacher write a regular letter

@markfoti100

So if I have the teacher write the letter, then mail it in themselves? Or should I ask for it back, then mail it in myself? Have you started getting recommendations yet?

I gave all of my professors the signed forms and addressed envelopes w/stamps before break. I am personally sending out my employer rec.

Especially since they’re not required, make sure the professors you choose actually know you personally. You want them to be meaningful and talk about you as a person, something admissions can’t see in your application. There’s no point in getting a rec from a professor who can only talk about your grade…admissions will already see it on your transcript.

my advice…don’t stress too much about getting recommendations. They are not required, and there are plenty of people who have been accepted without them. Also, with the deadline in a few weeks, you dont want to rush professors into writing recommendations (unless you are close with them)… you might come off as unprepared leading to a bad rec

quick question! i was wondering if it okay to use the school’s name (for example, “I want to go to USC because…”) or is it better to just address the school by using the general, University??

USCAcceptme: It doesn’t matter… In the end they just want to see why… I have a question regarding the essay though. Might sound stupid but I find it crazy that the personal essay is only 250-500 words about why you want to transfer… I am looking at the correct one right?

Hello all, this is my first post on CC and like many of you guys I will be applying to SC for Fall of 2013 as a Junior standing from Orange County. I am curious to know what direction everyone is going with their supplement short answer essay and was wondering if someone could check mine out for me and give me a few pointers. I had some professors look over it, but would really like some feedback from a student in my position.
Any help is appreciated !

@amann318 yeah i feel the same way but i guess its just cuz they wouldnt want to read two 1000 word essays from all the applicants hahahaha

@amann318 and thank you for you reply!

Hi  if I’m planning to transfer by my sophomore year, I’m supposed to input my high school grades right? Where am I supposed to include that on common app? :O

HI! Can someone tell me the essays that are required when applying to the Marshall business school? Thanks!

@jocelynhua: You don’t have to input your high school grades anywhere. Just send USC your official high school transcript!
@harry: The only essays Marshall applicants have to write are the 1000 character supplement and the general ‘Why are you transferring?’ common app essay.

I am writing here to warn others to not make the same mistake i just came to realize i did. One so dumb that I hope none of you intellectual individuals made yourselves.

Both the writing and supplement sections require you to write essays that have a maximum of “1,000 characters” and not 1,000 words. For some reason i mistook 1,000 characters for words and now I’m here left with trying to condense two 1,000 word essays into 1,000 characters lol. ***

Btw, wanted to ask what you guys thought my standing was getting into Marshall.

3.75 GPA
Current Junior @ CSULA
Golden Key Honours Society and Deans List since freshman year
Looking to major in Bus Admin in Operations Management
4.0 past two quarters i have taken so upward trend there
Did not give much for SAT’s in highschool so suffered with a 1640 or less i dont quite remmeber
Want to minor in music or cinematic arts
Treasure of Cultural club at my school.
Work experience at movie theater where my duties were to help in assisting managers in daily financials of the Business and able to work with projects with the CFO of the company, so have that experience.

Everyone seems to have GPA’s so high, and so much intern experience and high SAT’s… so im just wondering what you guys believe my chances are of admission into Marshall are. Also, for a second major option choice I really do not have any other interests except business. I cant put a second major interest in the cinematic arts school and music school because they have other supplements required and the dates for application are already done. So i was wondering what other major option i could possibly put that will give me a high chance of admission into the school. Something maybe like geology? since i took many courses in college and got good grades in them
I was wonder if that is enough to be admitted even if I do not necessarily address it in my supplement writings.

@kpalad I think your chances are strong. I know your GPA may seem “low” but realize a lot of the high GPAs you see are from community colleges. The fact that you’re coming from a 4 yr university should have some benefit, and regardless, a 3.75 is a very strong GPA. If you look at the decisions from 2010-2012, you will see there are plenty of students who are accepted with much lower GPAs (3.1-3.4), and the majority of these “exceptions” seem to come from ranked 4 yrs. SATs should not matter since you’re a Junior transfer. My advice, craft a really strong essay. Show admissions something that they can’t see from your transcript.

I’m on the same boat as you, junior transfer, ranked public 4 yr, not so good first semester, exceptionally good semesters following it, and have a lower GPA because of that. From what i’ve read, admissions likes to see students who have GPA trends like ours. Have you taken all of the prerequisites?

@harry188- there aren’t any additional essays Marshall applicants have to write. Everyone writes the paragraph and common app essays.

@katie9-- i would send everything together, it just makes it easier on them. So my advice is to gather your HS transcript/college transcript/LOR’s and send it all together.
And yes, i let my accounting professor know about 1 week ago (which i got 105% in her class) and she is going to craft one for me.

@alaintran-- i would be willing to look at your supplemental essay and give my opinion
