Official USC 2013 Transfer Thread

@Yoshi45: Absolutely! Good luck and fight on!

@Mbark21: A snappy essay and some strong extracurriculars should make up for your drop in grades. Also, you need not worry about mentioning UCLA; admissions can’t discriminate based on that or any other school rivalry.

@Katie617: I haven’t heard anything like that happening before. Best you call them directly and ask what happened and how to resolve the issue.

@that1guyy: There are no pre-req’s for the Cinematic Arts minor. According to my counselor, I should be able to finish in the two years I will have spent here at USC. You will have opportunities for some production classes, but not all of them. For example, I’m currently taking a motion picture camera class and three COMM classes.

The classes at Annenberg are interesting, and you will be learning and writing a ton. The building itself is fantastic. No internship yet. The girls in the Annenberg building are some of the most beautiful on campus. Professors are smart and helpful. I haven’t had an internship yet though, I’m trying to set one up for summer.

Hi guys, so i decided to recently join the CC community. Well I applied last year to become a computer engineering major at USC. During my freshmen year, I had a 3.4 GPA in the fall and then I knew I was screwed when I got a really low 2.84 GPA in the spring because of a failing calculus grade (my professor only had 3 students pass his calculus class that semester). My other grades that semester were of good standing (3 A’s and 1 B). Following that major disaster, my sophomore year I aced calculus and I was able to pull my gpa up this fall semester to a 3.7 GPA while also taking calc based physics. I’m worried that USC will see my failing calculus grade again and believe that I am not qualified to be an engineering student. Also, this spring I am taking calculus 2 and calc based physics 2 and it’s looking like I will be able to pull off a stronger GPA this semester to get a better looking trend on my transcript. I’m assuming they will ask for my spring grades considering the first calculus grade.

Thanks, I thought it was weird too. I’ll call Financial Aid tomorrow when the offices are open. Also, thanks for answering so many questions, it’s so helpful.

@Katie617: Absolutely, it’s my pleasure! I was in your position not too long ago and I want to do everything I can to help you guys out.

@TopHatFlyer: You can compose a letter to the admissions office explaining your low grade in calculus due to the hardness of the professor; you can throw in the fact that only three kids passed the class too. Make sure the letter has a professional tone and doesn’t give off a complaining vibe.

It saves them the trouble of having to e-mail or write you and ask you to explain the grade.

Any idea how much financial aide USC will give if your EFC is under 10,000?

Hi guys, I applied to USC as fall 2013 transfer. I applied for music industry and I go to a music conservatory. I am not applying for financial aid…any chance of getting in? SATs in HS were awful, grades were ok. College grades are improving

Hello everyone, I am curious to know if we need to update the classes we are taking if we ended up taking different courses. I am on a quarter system so I did not already have my classes selected for the third quarter as students might for there second semester when applying as a transfer student. If we do need to update it, how do we go about doing that? Thank you and good luck to everyone!

@aelan15. You do have to let admissions know that you are taking different classes from the ones you specified on your app.
I’m not sure how you let them know though. Maybe you can try calling them or someone else on here knows. But to my understanding, you do need to let them know ASAP

Do you think there is a chance they will let sophomores in without a SGR? I have 18 units and 4.0 and I would love to not have to wait until June? Does everyone who is trying to transfer in as a sophomore end up with a SGR?
Thanks!

I called USC admissions earlier today and if it is necessary that you update the courses that you are taking you can upload a document via USC Connect under the Additional Info Tab that is available under the Document Library.

I know we are a long way off from hearing anything but I keep checking everything on the website for any news or info. Since there is nothing to report let’s find out why everyone wants to go to USC. So what’s the pull for you?

So the “by April 1” decisions… does that apply to transfers, too?

@SilverRex,
You seem very knowledgeable so I am reaching out to you for this one:

I was originally going to apply to USC as a Music Industry major strictly for the business aspect, but thought I wouldn’t look too competitive because I don’t sing/play an instrument. I ended up working with a former college admissions officer, and we decided on ‘American pop culture’ for my major and ‘Communication and the entertainment industry’ for a minor… taking full advantage of interdisciplinary studies!

Anyways, I am quite worried about getting accepted to USC based on a few things: no college-level foreign language (but does this really matter for transfer students and/or aspiring music/entertainment industry agents?), average grades in college level math and science courses, AND not so great SAT scores back in high school. Now, IMO, this stuff wouldn’t seem to matter for what I’m after, but if admissions are looking for well-rounded academics, its certainly not me.

With all of that being said, should I stop worrying?

Thanks!

Hey guys. I’m kinda late on this, but on my USC connect they are now asking for a Copy of my parent’s 2012 federal income tax return for verification. What exactly is that? Would I have to send in the entire booklet of tax return to them including the W-2 form? What did you guys send in?

They absolutely need the federal income tax return form, and the W2s. I had to send both.

I know they ask for the whole 1040 tax form and W-2 form, but do I have to send in all the side stuff that they used to file? Like the mortgage paper, stock stuff…etc.

Hey guys how much do you think a letter of recommendation from some one who is an alumnus/ member of an Advisory Council/gives financial contributions would help?

Hi people, I have a question regarding the application.

I called USC Undergrad Admin and they say they have all my documents and my application is complete, but on USConnect some of them still appear on required, will this affect my chances of getting in? I say this because they mentioned that until in USConnect it appears as complete they wont review my application. Any thoughts?

I sent all my documents by Feb 1st.

Thanks a lot!

Hey guys,

For the Transfer Merit Scholarship, we don’t have to actually send in application right? Just as long as our GPA and whatnot are high enough we’ll be considered?

@bycity94 … I’d send them any pertinent information that was required on the 1040. For instance, I gave them my 1098-T as well. It’s best to err on the side of caution, Financial Aid is not going to ding you for doing such.
