so I read that the avg financial aid is 41k for transfer applicants. is this true? is there a possibility we will get more seeing that tuition costs around 64k…lol…
@trnsfrstdnt I have no idea. I used their financial aid calculator and it said my COA would be nearly comparable to attending UCLA, but then a poster mentioned that USC doesn’t really like to give financial aid to anyone other than freshmen and that financial aid is cut each year you attend USC. I have no experience with this myself, but that would be pretty sad if it’s true
wow… that sucks. im hoping to get admitted to UCLA since im waitlisted with TAP. if not then there’s going to be an issue financially for USC.
Good afternoon, been following this thread for quite a while, just now decided to join. I’m a dornsife applicant. Still have not received anything. I’m a usmc vet applying with roughly a 3.6/7gpa, 31 competed units, 12 in progress.
Hello everyone!
Just received an email from my counselor asking for an SGR, when they already asked me for a WGR about a month ago. Good / bad sign?
l sent both
For those receiving a sgr can you please relieve your major or stats thank you
Has anyone heard from Marshall yet?
Hey all-
I’m 26 and attending Santa Monica College- I’ve applied to USC Dornsife primarily for a Geological Sciences BS with the Earth Sciences BA as my alternate choice.
I’m posting not to ask what you think of my chances, just to share my story as it’s non-traditional in case anyone else with similar circumstances is reading the board.
Attended University of Colorado Boulder for a semester eight years ago (Fall 2006), with two B+s, two Fs, and a W. I was a musician at the time and missed a couple of finals for something I was contracted to do and I dropped out because I was becoming very busy with music. Also have five AP tests (English Lang:5 English Lit:5 US History:5 US Govt.:3 Comparative Govt.:4) with credits.
My GPA from CU was a 1.58 when I began at SMC this year, and I’ve taken on 38 credits over the Fall, Winter, and Spring terms. Including Winter grades, I have 6 As out of 6 so far, including in Geology Lab (my major choice), Physical Anthropology Lab, Finite Math (L.A. math at SMC), Chinese; now taking Chemistry Lab, Chinese 2, and two Geography courses this semester.
USC asked for my Winter grades on Thursday. I have two rec letters, one from my Geology professor and one from my Art History professor. I’m hoping the request is a good sign, and understand needing to see more as my previous track record at CU was poor. I think I’ve raised my GPA to about a 3.05 after Winter classes, and am expecting it to climb to about 3.30 after the spring.
I’ll post again when I hear more from the school. I was already rejected by UCLA and Vanderbilt, and I expect UCLA drew a hard line on the GPA because of the huge pool this year.
Good luck to everyone!
@aubreygiveshugs Thank u for your kind response!! Good luck at USC!
Got SGR and WGR
CC 2 year transfer
igetc : all done
pre reqs : all done
gpa : 3.73~
applied : to marshall/pre accounting
Forgot to mention above that I’ve completed IGETC and will have 60 credits at the end of spring, if that helps paint the picture.
@HenryClay1832 Hey, I’m a pretty non-traditional student myself. I dropped out of school after 8th grade, so I didn’t exactly have a HS GPA or just about anything high school related. I’m 21 now and really want to get into USC. They rejected me last year, but I do somewhat understand. I had taken a whopping total of 8 classes my first two years of CC because I couldn’t get a financial aid class fee waiver. I tried to stuff a lot into my third year at CC including an insane 6 week 9 unit winter session where we covered like 3 chapters a week and had weekly exams (not sure how I made it out of that). Anyway, your story speaks to me.
While it’s true you aren’t at the average 3.7GPA that USC transfers have, I think your story would appeal to the people at admissions. Going from a 1.58 to a 3.08 is a very impressive upward trend to me. There was one user that had a 2.9 GPA that was accepted and several that had a 3.30ish GPA that also got into USC last year. If you really knock it out of the park this spring semester, I really think you have a shot. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck Oh, and I believe IGETC doesn’t match up perfectly with USC"s GE requirements, but a lot of the same courses cover some of the categories, so hopefully you took some of those.
@HenryClay1832 What an amazing journey you’ve been on thanks for sharing - sounds as if they are watching your upward trend. Santa Monica College has a great track record with usc many of my friends have made the transfer route from there. (Now I’m crossing my fingers for a SGR from Dornsife Psychology)
Does USC send rejections through the mail or is it only posted on the portal??
@Msmclagirl: My major is Psychology.
@samchoochiu: I received it via portal. I did not get a notification by email or mail (yet).
@beachbum0130: Yes, it was under “check application status” in my messages as of today. However, a transcript request was under “submit application documents” yesterday.
@madlion21 @zettasyntax Thanks for sharing! It’s been a long road but everybody just has to keep at it. @zettasyntax I did the crazy Winter session at SMC, was only 7 units because they max you at 8, but my Geology lab was 4.5 hours Monday through Thursday for six weeks with a 2.5 hour English Lit class right before- I know how you felt!
I did IGETC because of the UC stuff, but most of it has overlapped with USC. There are maybe two missing categories that I have, but there wasn’t a lot I could do about it while I was cramming in all of the other stuff.
Good luck to you both and to everybody else, I’ll keep you updated. Maybe there’s some hope for us dropouts after all haha!
@orangeapple3 You got a call? I didnt know they did Interviews? What exactly did they say? I am transfer student for Fall 2015 for SCA too
@orangeapple3 Please please reply back and let me know! I am scared now
Any Annenberg hopefuls hear anything back yet? SGR or acceptance?
The wait is killing me
