@BayAreaMom15, my son is also looking for quiet housing…he is in engineering and I heard Maple is relatively quiet(it’s the engineering dorm). We are on the fence about Hansee, but who knows what will be available when it’s time to pick!
We’re OOS from Massachusetts and my son received his acceptance letter (direct to the engineering school) on Saturday…he’s so thrilled!
But I’m a little nervous about the new engineering admissions going direct to the school instead of direct to the major. Seems a bit of a risk to me! He wants mechanical engineering. How hard will it be to get his desired engineering major?
Anyway, here are some of his stats:
GPA: 3.9
SATs: 1570 (780 writing/790 math)
SAT subject tests:800 biology/760 math II
Accelerated/honors STEM track at HS
AP courses junior year: 5 biology/5 US history
4 AP courses senior year Stats, physics, calculus, Java (will test in May)
4-year, 3-season varsity athlete.
Rowing team since 8th grade (varsity since 9th grade)
Swim team (varsity, States championship since 9th grade, captain gr 12)
Community service: taught swim clinics for local youth, mentored younger students in biology classes
Employed as life guard since end of grade 10. Red Cross certification as both lifeguard & instructor
Active member of local dog sledding club
Trains & mushes our family’s Siberian Husky team. Maybe that was his “hook”?
@LolliCoomassie They will not look at his high school record when he applies to his major. The hope is that they have accepted about as many “direct to college” as they have spots for in the school of engineering so it is not brutally competitive as the old “pre-engineering” system was, but because it’s a brand new system, there is no way to know for sure how it will all work out.
@LolliCoomassie I emailed direct to college admission staff asking the same. They said that they expect MOST direct to college admits to be placed in their first choice preference. They pointed out for some streams (eg CE), not everyone will be placed since demand exceeds supply. Regarding EE, they said that as long as you meet basic requirements it should be okay. I’m guessing mech isn’t too competitive either. But I’d suggest call them up and ask, they seem very helpful.
Purple and Gold is only for out of state.
Husky Promise is only for in-state.
You can find other in-state opportunities at the Washington Scholarship Coalition thewashboard.org
D accepted to UW with direct admit to Business school. (OOS from CA). Got Purple & Gold for $12k total 4 years in the mail over the weekend. Deciding now between that and various UCs and a few more to come. Really enjoyed our visit in Feb. and it is a great school.
Yes, UCs are the worst in providing OOS scholarships. Cal Poly has a “Green and Gold OOS Scholarship” (not sure who stole who’s idea on the naming) but it’s only $1000 per year.
