soccer: That great news! I didn’t know they had a read on freshman enrollment until after May1. That means there’s still hope for my daughter!!!

FYI… I also heard last year they had a little over 400 on the waitlist and took a little over 100. Depending on your stats that is not really that bad.

Will it help if I call Cal Poly and explain my situation? I’m waitlisted for business, and Cal Poly is my #1 school. I’ve been rejected from every UC/California school I’ve applied to so if I don’t get off the waitlist at CP I have to go to Miami or ASU for college. Miami is too far/expensive, and ASU is just…ASU… lol.

^bump??? wow SLO forum is DEAD compared to all the other schools hahaha

I have heard that writing letters, and explaining that CP is your #1 choice, in the past, has resulted in some bump-up’s on the waitlist. This, although, is a very unusual year with all the budget cuts, and record number of applicants. It can’t hurt to try! Good luck to you.

Go for it A_Procrastinator. Why not? I hope you get into CP. I know it is your #1 choice. Maybe you were very close to getting in. i am sure now that the UCs are finished with offering acceptances for the most part, maybe kids will start letting schools know where they do not want to go. This will allow kids on the waitlists to get in. My son needs to do that for the schools he is not attending. Good luck!

thanks for the encouragement momofmv! I really hope I get in. I’m gonna start writing a letter right now.

I got my information from old posts and my daughters friends mom who last year called CP and they gave her a rough figure to be about the same, around 400 waited to 100 accepted. I do not know the individual programs stats. Your daughter should send a letter to admissions stating CP is her first choice especially if her stats are good.

I got waitlisted from CalPoly SLO, but accepted to Pomona.
SLO is my first choice, i didn’t apply to any of the UC’s tho bc theyre tooo expensive!

Im scared i wont get accepted to SLO, so im beginning to lean on Pomona as my backup, is there a difference in the schools? I mean SLO’s beautiful, and highly ranked, but i feel as tho SLO has the upperhand in the sister schools, ya?
So i was advised to appeal, or write a letter to the school inorder to state our interest in CP, waht should we write in the letter, what shouldn’t we say? Please help…

I am on the same page as you sdaneshfar. I really wanted to get into Cal Poly Slo for business but am also on the waitlist. Does anybody know how and where to right the letter to and how this all works?

"Cal Poly does not set aside space in our class for students who appeal admission decisions. Every denied application has been reviewed for maximum consideration. Therefore, for an appeal to have merit, it must bring to light new academic information as well as information pertaining to extenuating circumstances that was not present in the application - information that clearly shows the student to be stronger than had been earlier evidenced. Grades received in the current academic year are not a basis for an appeal or the reversal of a decision. "

that is what their appeals page says, if that helps any…

^Yes, but this is a waitlist appeal, the info you found was for people who were rejected. It’s different.

My son was waitlisted for civil engineering. His stats are 4.2 GPA; 32 ACT. We spoke with an admissions officer two weeks ago following a campus tour. She said average for civil engineers they admitted was 3.96 GPA/30 ACT. She had trouble trying to explain why he may have been waitlisted. Our oldest son is a junior bio-chem major at SLO so we’re still hoping there’s a chance for his younger brother to get off the waitlist./

Your son’s situation makes no sense at all! Maybe Cal Poly thought he was overqualified or that he would choose better schools than Cal Poly? Im going on a tour too next week, hopefully I can find out more then.

RetAFCE That stinks!!! Cp SLO should not place a student on the waitlist because they think he/she may choose another school. He had great stats! He should have been accepted if the ave. was lower than what he had. That is so sad that your older son is there and you are already a supporter of CP and your younger son didn’t get in. I certainly hope he is accepted soon. If anyone has a reason to appeal it is your son. How great would that be to have two sons at the same school! Best of luck to you…

Just a FYI

I have some interesting information for some of you. I currently attend a community college and will be transferring to Cal Poly in the fall. One of my teachers is on the advisory board at Cal Poly and he gave me a paper with a points system on how they score applicants. The sheet lists various classes they want you to have completed prior to transfer and each one is assigned a point value for completion. GPA only played a small part in scoring (25% of the overall score or so) Basically you could have a 4.5 GPA and not be accepted if you did not meet the criteria for classes they wanted you to have.

The biggest factor for getting into Cal Poly for any major is having not just Statistics OR Pre-Calculus completed prior to entering but BOTH. The total point value for all of the classes they wanted added up to be like 2000 or so. If you applied without taking Pre-Calculus, they subtract 1500 points from that score. If you apply without taking Stats, they subtract 500 points. This being said, if you haven’t completed both math classes it is virtually impossible to get in. My GPA is nowhere near as good as most of the people that have posted here. 3.2 as a transfer. However, my major is much less impacted (Forestry Natural Resources). I followed the guidelines that were layed out for me however and I was accepted.

I have no idea how the first time freshman admissions work but as far as for those of you looking to transfer from a 2 year school, make sure you take Statistics and Pre-Calculus as this is hands down the biggest determining factor when it comes to being admitted as a transfer student. If any transfer students have any questions about any of this feel free to ask me.

I see. thats helpful. So do you have any information for Liberal Studies majors perhaps? And I took Pre Calc and am planning on taking stats fall '10. i’m a transfer student seeking to transfer fall '11. cal poly is my number 1 choice for sure.

I don’t know any specifics for that major but trust me, having that Pre-Calc and Stats out of the way is like gold. I mean I got in with a 3.2 GPA. I think when it comes to transferring its more about following their pattern than anything. My Teacher told me that Cal Poly SLO is the ONLY CSU that requires both Stats and Pre-Calc to get in. Every other CSU as well as most UC’s only require 1 or the other. The reason they do this is because it is such a competitive school they make the criteria harder. Honestly I don’t know how a student would know what their criteria was if somebody with knowledge didn’t tell them. Doesn’t really seem fair. I got lucky as I basically had the exact “Get into Cal Poly” recipe layed out for me.

yeah i know what you mean. its weird how people with high gpa got rejected. it makes me wonder if cal poly was their number one, so they followed the exact classes for that exact major. i’m taking the classes that they want for my major so hopefully i get in but you never know…
