Oh, The Weather Outside Is Frightful

Hope all your sons and daughters are doing well and staying warm during this challenging time in OKC. DD has been lucky and has had heat and electricity the whole time though trees have fallen on cars in her parking lot in Cokesbury (she sent pics). Still trying to figure out what time she will be home as her original flight was for Friday evening pm but we bumped it to 12:15 prior to the storm and she now has finals scheduled for Friday and Saturday all day. We’ll see . . .

Hi Carole, I'm glad your D is warm! My S is cold, I think he's staying in bed, he has electricity but no heat, I wonder how long it will take before he seeks warmth elsewhere? We don't know when or how he's getting home for sure. His jury was bumped from monday to tuesday, so now....? Hopefully he will let me know later today if the young man he rides with normally will still be able to bring him. I wonder how long they'll keep the dorms open. Hopefully some others with more info will post.

S lives across the street from campus in a house and has heat and electricty -but so many don't I think they are crowded with sharing. I know one of the kids' houses had a tree fall on it. No one was injured. When S told me about them rescheduling finals for Saturday I couldn't believe it. I think they might have a lot of trouble enforcing that with all the flights, cost etc. We will see.
SRW - do I remember right -you live in Kansas? S drives north on 35W, he hadn't planned to take off until Saturday anyway so it might be an alternative for your S.

Clue, thanks, I'll let S know, is your S in the opera scene class? According to the schedule they may have the last final of the day, which is the one I am concerned about keeping S at school late on Saturday. Since it a performing final they may schedule it at a different time, I am waiting to hear. And I have no idea when his jury will be. I hadn't budgeted on a flight, espcially a last minute full price one! Boy, that's a loooong drive for your S. How many hours? Does he stop for a night?

Yes...how fun is this...darling D HAD a flight Friday - I changed to Saturday (For almost $300) and now she calls to tell me that her acting final is until 2 on Saturday (I got her the last flight at 3pm). I told her to call the dean or I would. THey have to be a little flexible I hope.....not everyone can drive home.

SHe has electric but no heat as of mid afternoon - and no hot water! I hope this gets better soon.

As you know my D is in Clash of the Choirs and is flying out Thursday at around 6:00. Because she had a final Thursday afternoon, the producers booked her and another girl on a separate flight (the rest of the OKC choir is leaving before noon.) There is no way she can change that. She has been emailing her professors to make other arrangements. Some have responded and have been very accommodating, allowing her to come to their office to take the exam when she can fit it in between other finals and juries this week. Personally, I think they should just cancel finals!

She also has electricity, but no heat or hot water. She does have an electric blanket for her bed, and she spent all day shopping at the mall, so I guess she stayed warm!

Sorry to hear about those without heat or hot water. I'm kind of surprised the school didn't make arrangements for these students. Spoke to my D this morning on her way to once of her dance finals. She will be glad to be home. We have now bumped up her flight to 6:00 am on Friday as she said there will be another system coming through later Friday. Luckily she was able to reschedule almost all of her finals for Wednesday/Thursday as I wasn't willing to pay to change her flight. We're still waiting on her Acting final though. Safe travels to all.

Carole, glad you got things worked out for travel. They got the heat back in the dorms last night so today should be better. I think S has all finals done by sometime on Friday, he got the Saturday one rescheduled sometime during the week. Still haven't heard about ride, but I'm hopeful it will work out well.

Great Thread name!!! I had planned to post one on "The Big Chill". I gather they are trying to fix juries to clear kids out closer to on time. S was originally scheduled to come in today...now expects the be late Friday. I don't understand the electricity but no heat. Is the campus on steam? S is in Taj Mahal (New Dorm). He did admit that maybe they just hadn't tried the thermostat in the room but clearly that wasn't it. Trees falling on cars makes me glad he has that parking structure under the dorm to use.

Mikksmom...ouch!!! I tried an experiment with Priceline.com when we went to DC last month that worked pretty well. No guarantees when you're talking holiday traffic and full loads. I had first looked at what was available at normal prices and then tried the "name your own price" option and chose a price that represented what they claimed was the potential discounted price available. Worked amazingly well.

Happy holidays to all and safe travel wishes for your kids

American called my D friday to cancel her flight-booked her on another that evening and she arrived home at 2am- a day early. I was so pleased with American's forethought to an approaching storm. She was glad to get out of the frigid OK weather. Merry Christmas and be safe!:)

I hope everyone's kids made it home safe and sound. D went to New York. Flight out of OKC was on time, but connecting flight in Chicago was canceled, so she spent the night in a hotel, got up early to get on a stanby flight and finally got there Friday mid-morning, sat on the runway for an hour before they were able to get off.
