Winter Storm

Watching the news last night and this a.m., makes me remember, although the snow wasn't this bad, a couple trips we had 2 years ago! Just wanted to wish all the auditioners and parents traveling to the Ohio valley/mid atlantic safe travels!

I think Ohio valley is ok right now–just put son on the plane back to Oberlin. They don’t seem to be getting hammered by this storm, though I see snow is expected later in the week as well. We lucked out: his plane was originating in Honolulu! But east coast–wow.

Good luck/safe travels/break a leg everyone!

Good luck everyone! Be safe. Allow lots and lots of time!

It’s good that Peabody’s auditions are later because the state of Maryland is closed for the weekend.

Ugh-- we have 22" inches of snow right now with no sign of abatement… Tomorrow morning we are driving from Philadelphia to Cleveland for the CIM auditions and back on Tuesday, when more snow is predicted. My husband had shoulder surgery yesterday so I have scoured the area’s Craigslist for a snowplow operator to help clear our 100-foot driveway so we can leave tomorrow morning. The only snowplow driver who returned my call (out of 30 calls!) is charging me $300. I am calling this “driveway robbery.” Very anxious about driving to Cleveland tomorrow, but at least we aren’t flying.

I saw the forecast and immediately thought of those with audition travel plans. Hang tight, make the best of it, and best wishes to all. Stay safe.

The wife and D drove from S Jersey to UNC-Greensboro early Friday AM for today’s (Sat) audition. They made it through DC and Richmond before the snow started, and encountered mostly rain across NC. The plan was for them to drive home tonight, but decided against. They’re going to see the Winston-Salem Symphony tonight, instead. Interesting program: Gershwin Concerto and Shostakovich 10.

We have about 15" out here in Montgomery County, glassharmonica. I had a heart attack recently and Mrs. 9992 had eye surgery last week so we paid a couple of neighbor kids to dig out our cars today.

don9992: we used to live in Montgomery Co, still miss it 16 years later. The pictures look like it does in my backyard/neighborhood here in northern NY for most of the winter! I know you guys don’t have the heavy equipment to deal with it down there. Take care of yourselves!

Dadofclard - I loved the music building at UNCG. The atrium area is particularly lovely in the spring and summer when everything is green.

Oops - just reread your post and you didn’t go.

glassharmonica: The audition costs continue to mount with $300 for the driveway! If only musicians could ignore 29 out of 30 gigs offered to them and then charge $300 for a 10-minute gig. At least the music season is longer than the snow season.

Drive/fly safe, everyone! I’m anxiously watching the forecasts for next week when we’re on the road…

don9992, the best to you and the missus. Here’s to a speedy and full recovery for both of you.

Don, hope you and Mrs. 9992 are having a speedy recovery. We do not plan a trip to Rochester again until at least April, taking no chances with the weather. H will go help S move home in May. Rochester seemed to miss the snow, S has friends visiting for auditions this weekend. We had about 2 hours of rain here in SO FLA with a little wind and are getting a “cool” day tomorrow (60’s). Be well.

violadad, lol! Don9992-- it stopped snowing shortly after I wrote that. And on closer inspection, digging out our cars and shoveling a path for the mailman, I have decided that the news reports are wrong: it’s about 18 inches except for drifts.

Hope all of you have safe travels and fine auditions. If you search past posts…you can read about the snowstorm in DC in 2003 that WAS on the weekend of auditions at Peabody. What a mess…and yes, we were there. They were VERY accommodating and understanding of the situation…lots of rescheduling and lots of “just doing the audition when you got there”. They DID postpone the auditions from Monday to Wednesday of that week primarily because there was faculty who could not get into any of the DC airports which were all closed.

Hopefully next weekend will be fine. I’m flying to Baltimore too!!

Just a dusting here in north Jersey. Must have been the prayers of all those folks from a local musical organization who are running a fundraiser tonight that did not get snowed out.

For those who must travel today, perhaps a more northerly route than normal would be advantageous until things get dug out.

Cartera45: I did accompany D on a visit to UNCG in early December, and I, too, was struck by how beautiful the Music Building and surroundings were, even at that time of year. We also saw a concert (Symphonic Band?) at Aycock Auditorium, which just re-opened this fall after renovations - also, very nice.

Even more than the physical surroundings, I was impressed by the people. Both faculty and students went out of their way to make us feel welcome for the two days we were there. As we walked to our car after the concert, 2 clarinet students called out to us and came over to talk. There seems to be much camaraderie, especially in the clarinet studio.

Dadofclard - I agree that everyone was very nice there. The level of talent is very impressive and there is a lot going on in the area. I hope the revitalization of Greensboro is continuing but I know the economy must be making it very difficult for new businesses to come into the downtown area. It was very difficult for my D to decide not to go there.

As a Californian who knows nothing about storms or how they move, etc., I’m wondering about our upcoming trip to NYC for auditions. We’re flying east on Feb. 14th (not the last flight of the day, at least) with the first audition at 3pm on Feb. 15th. Is this risky? Leaving a day earlier would be very difficult, but then again, so too would be missing an audition.
