Ok here's my dilemma...

I qualify for the (TAG) agreement at my JC, and I was going to sign it for UCSD sometime this week. I went to check out the campus yesterday and absolutely loved it. I was pretty much set, until I did a little more research. Of course, as with all things, if it's too good to be true, it prolly is. I guess UCSD doesn't offer guaranteed on-campus housing for transfers. Major bummer. I don't think I'm going to want to move to San Diego and live in some apartment off-campus by myself. Besides, one of the things i'm really looking forward to about transfering is the college atmosphere involved with living on campus.

Now, the major problem lies within the fact that my GPA will most likely not be high enough to get me into the other two schools which I really want to go to (Berkeley and UCLA) Realistically, it'll probably be at around a 3.3/3.4 by the time I'm ready to apply.

So, I can sign (TAG) agreement and be guaranteed acceptance to one of the 3 schools I really want to go to (without the guarantee of in-campus housing), or take my chances with normal applications to all the other UC's.(most of which offer in-campus housing for transfers)

hmm..couldnt u sign the TAG AND apply normally to other UCs? Because i signed the TAA or whatever with UC davis, but i also applied normally to other UCs..

a little off topic, but do u guys know if UCLA and UCBERKELEY offer dorms for transfers as well?

Are you transferring this fall? Or fall '06? Anyways, I had a friend who transferred with UCSD and didn't seem to have any trouble finding housing. Does UCLA offer guaranteed housing? I don't think so, but they're probably just saying that because they don't want to be held liable for that claim, even if they have enough housing availabe, because UCLA has their own transfer student housing community (Hilgard). Are you applying to UCI also? And what is the minimum requirement for the TAG-UCSD? I thought it'd be at least a 3.5, but I could be wrong. How do you go about signing a TAG, anyway? haha...I think my CC offers it, but there's no info on it in the Honors Transfer Handbook. Hope that helps!

Well, the thing is that the (TAG) requires me to take a lot of classes that won't be transferable to the other UC's. Basically, if you sign up for the (TAG) with UCSD, you HAVE to be 100% sure that you are going there.

As for the Dorms, I believe UCLA offers a 1 year guarantee for on-campus housing for transfers, and Berkeley also offers guaranteed housing for transfers...

Greenmoo: I'm transfering fall of '06. Did your friend get on-campus housing at UCSD? I was under the impression (from what people have told me) that almost no transfer students live on-campus at UCSD. If I couldn't live on campus at UCSD, I probably wouldn't go.

As for UCI, yes, I am most likely going to apply there. I live about 10 minutes away and if I decided to go there, could save alot on housing.

The TAG (Transfer Agreement Guarantee) for UCSD requires you maintain a 2.8 GPA, but they also make you take some classes that wont be accepted at other UC's. Again, if you sign the (TAG) with UCSD, you better make sure that's where you're going or else you're going to spend another year or two in JC. Just go to your transfer center and ask the counselor there if your college administers the contract. :)

yea the UCSD policy of not offering on-campus housing is troubling for me as well...and I am seriously contemplating of not even going there...and that school is in la jolla...one of the most expensive places to live.

Well, the UCSD housing site states:Transfer students will not receive guaranteed campus housing for the 2005-06 academic year. However, you are welcome to sign up on our wait list at..

I'm guessing that he went through that...and probably got an on-campus apartment? That's probably where all upper-division students live anyway, but I'll ask him to double-check.

Anyways, that's weird about the TAG requiring you to take classes that won't be accept at other UCs. What classes are these? Are they not IGETC? I was under the impression that for most classes, if one UC accepts them, so do the others, except if it's a specific major required class, but even then, it should be IGETC, right? Well, on the UCSD site it has my JC listed as TAG (El Camino), but there's no mention of it anywhere at my JC. I guess I'll go check with my counselor, but I was wondering when you have to sign that to transfer Fall 06? Like, is there a deadline? But a 2.8 required GPA is pretty sweet, since my DAP/GTO contract with UCLA requires a 3.5. :|

Damn this sucks about housing. SD is my #2 choice school. Really horrible.

Green, in my cc TAG requires series of classes in one category. ex: 2 music classes like 1 and 2. Two history classes like 1 and 2. Two math classes. IN sequence. I hope u get the picture.

This requirement differs from igetc.

Also some majors like bio, chem, compsi do not guarantee admission even w/ tag. U still need 3.4+ to get into those majors.

highschool whats your #1 choice?

it's ucla. But after spending this much time w/ my parents and lving in the same crowded home(i share a room w/ bro), i could really use a change. I live 5 mins by car to ucla, so it would save me tons of money to live at home. But i want that college experience.

Tough choice.

Be In debt for ~15K and enjoy ur univ expirience VS save money and miss out on some of the things/

yea tuition is not that expensive...it's the dorming that gets expensive..and CA off campus apartments end up costing almost the same

Ya, TAG has too many requirements esp for engineering students. But it is somewhat a good deal. As for me, I am not qualified for any Guaranteed admission or any programs of that sort cuz of my immigrant visa. Suz.

coast: what's your major

political science....

Ok so I've been thinking it over and am starting to lean heavily towards signing the contract. When everything is said and done, I don't know if I can pass up the oppurtunity to get into a major research university like UCSD, specially seeing as how my chances of getting into UCLA and Berekely would be pretty slim. If I don't sign the contract, realistically I'd end up at UCSB; while that in itself is not bad, I just don't think I can put partying ahead of education.

The problem of course will be the housing, but I've talked to some people at UCSD and they don't seem to think off-campus housing is that much of a problem at all.

I don't understand why people shy away from UCSB because its characterized as a party school. The fact is that partying is not mandatory and is a personal choice....and UCSB is a great public college and ranks quite high in the nation.

While off campus housing is not a problem..it will cost you a lot as the school is in the la jolla area...I am getting turned off from UCSD for the very same reason...for the first year atleast as a transfer, to experience college life, I would like on campus housing.

I think you need a 2.8 for TAG to enter UCSD... but the GPA for the majors are much higher. (I am under the impression that if you are admitted into the university but not the major... you have 2 qts. to raise your GPA and complete courses..so that you may enter into your major) Also, many of the TAG classes are similar to IGETC classes (at least @ my cc they are)... I could have done either one. However, my cc is here in San Diego... so I am not sure if the TAG agreement is different?

As for housing... a two room apartment near UCSD goes for 1500 a month... but if you don't mind driving then you can get one for about 1300.

socalgirl, Are u sure about the cost? U can't even get housing in la for that kind of price.... Westwood is not cheaper than La Jolla from what i know and price at westwood is 2200 for 2 bedroom.

Fei, It's very dificult to say no, when ur roomate and everyone else around u is partying and getting laid.

After even more thought, I've decided to sign the contract. I'm going to be choosing the John Muir college.

As I said in my other post, the realistic chances of me getting into a better school without some type of transfer agreement are very slim. My GPA after this semester will probably be in the 3.2-3.4 range. I had some problems with parting too much in my 1st semester and it's come back to bite me in the butt.

Fei: I understand what you're saying about UCSB. The problem is, if I have that much of an opportunity to party, I WILL get distracted from my studies hehe. There is no doubt in my mind I would be partying non-stop at UCSB. I did it in high school and in my 1st year at JC and it came back to hurt me.

The off-campus housing rates for UCSD are a little worrisome, but hopefully with financial aid + parental contributions it won't be that major of a problem.

Here are a couple of sample rates I found on the UCSD off-campus housing site...
