I'm a incoming freshman and wondering what I can do to ensure I get an on campus job

Greetings daymo.

One way is to keep an eye on the FAU Jobs site at https://jobs.fau.edu/applicants/jsp/shared/frameset/Frameset.jsp?time=1310022371122. Set position type to “Student.”

You can also ask around once you’re on campus. I would start over in the Student Union. Student Government always seems to need people.

Program Board, which coordinates campus events, has a posting on the website above for 8.25/hour, 20 hours a week (mostly nights and weekends). That’s a great job if you can get it.

If you have even a small inkling of writing ability, the University Press can net you a small amount of cash here and there (as a side job, not a primary money-maker).

Program Board and University Press are both on the second floor of the Student Union.

They tend to hire a lot of people at the bookstore for the Fall rush and then lay them off 2-3 weeks later. So I wouldn’t bother there. I’d also stay away from the food services side of things, except maybe at Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts (in the library). I just don’t see many students doing those jobs, perhaps partly because of the hours.

Also, keep your eyes open for flyers and whatnot posted in the Breezeway. Sometimes you find an on-campus research job – and those are good gigs – or you find out about a decent off-campus job.

I would definitely avoid ANYTHING vague without a specific job description. Just avoid it like the plague, especially if it merely says, “Student Work” with a phone number. Those are usually commission jobs like telemarketing with “base appointments” or selling a set of knives door-to-door, and they never work out well. The companies also tend to be extremely shady.

Hope that helps!

More on the base appt/knives situation:
