Here is an important consideration. Does your family have health insurance that will provide coverage for you in the United States? If not, the colleges will require that you either purchase their plan (which can be quite expensive) or get your own insurance that provides coverage that is equivalent to what they offer. Details may vary, so definitely check with the colleges before you commit . One of my son’s colleges would have waived their fee for their insurance if we didn’t have our own because that was part of their financial aid package, but I don’t know if that is common.
I agree that most LACs that are still accepting applications would not have a CS department as good as ASU or UofA. I also thought $25K was the goal, but i now that I realize it’s $15K, it’s unlikely that the privates will get to that price point.
Yes details do vary. This is not true of every US college. My kids school requires international students to purchase health insurance but not US citizens, though of course having health insurance is a very good idea. I have never had to show proof of insurance for my kids.
We recently visited University of New Mexico as well as New Mexico State University for our student interested in computer science and/or cybersecurity. Both would likely be in your price range, but each has a different type of campus and different city size. We liked both and felt each would meet our student’s interests.
Throw in apps to Western Carolina or UNC Pembroke which are very affordable for out-of-state students. Eastern Kentucky also has crazy low out-of-state rates.
Also, Eastern Kentucky is an Intelligence Community Center for Academic Excellence and it has a cool Intelligence minor that could tie nicely to Comp Sci or Cyber Security.
Just found this on University of New Mexico’s website which is awesome! Seems to good…maybe it’s only for the 1st year. It says “freshmen” after all
“New non-resident freshmen with a 3.0 GPA or a test score of 20 ACT or 1030 SAT may be eligible to pay the tuition and fee rate of New Mexico residents if awarded a scholarship. This could be less than tuition rates in your home state.”
It means that this is a possibility for students who enroll as first time freshmen. The awards, I believe, are for all four years if you get them and maintain the required GPA
Adding University of New Mexico is often overlooked when these auto merit awards are discussed. Apply and see! But do it soon. I’m not sure what the deadline is…
UNM still requires a SAT or ACT AND a GPA score in order to qualify for the Amigo Scholarship; however, for both the WUE/WUE Plus and LUE/LUE Plus, the student only needs either a GPA OR a standardized test score to qualify.
Student must apply to and be accepted to UNM by May 1.
WUE and LUE offer 150% of instate tuition rate to non-residents.
WUE Plus/LUE Plus offer instate tuition rates to non-residents.
UNM has a low COA.
Instate tuition & fees = $9228/year (2 semesters, 15 credits each semester)
Traditional dorm + meal plan =$10,395/year
Without a state residency, the OP could still qualify for the International Amigo with a just GPA.
My dad just told me that New Mexico is full of rattle snakes and that people will try to shoot me. Hopefully I can convince him to let me go if I get accepted and its affordable haha
This is true. As far as University of Arizona is concerned, they do offer a student plan. Here are the details for this year, not sure where the details for next year’s are, but this should help have an idea. https://health.arizona.edu/student-health-insurance
My dad just told me that New Mexico is full of rattle snakes and that people will try to shoot me.
LOL! I heard that when I first moved there 40+ years ago. While I’ve seen a few rattlesnakes in my life, none of the ones I encountered were in ABQ. Mostly they were up in the wooded backcountry areas of the National Forests. Rattlesnakes tend to avoid people and places people frequent.
But if you really want to see a live rattlesnake, you could go to reptile house at the zoo or to the Rattlesnake Museum.
The campus area is very safe. So just promise your dad you won’t go shopping for meth in the wrong part of town after sundown.
Remember Breaking Bad is fiction not a documentary.
