Ook...so i'm getting worried...

I am a URM (Black) but i am out of state and all of these stories on here about people who have gotten rejected are really freaking me out?...I've know people from my school who were black also get accepted with lower stats than me but I am not getting my hopes up because I know a rejection is likely.

For an Out of State African American Male....what kind of credentials would i need. Does a 3.7 unweighted and a 30 act (1980 SAT) cut it....or i am just going to be looking for a rejection

I think you have a good shot. URM + decent stats = good shot

does anyone know what an average instate URM's stats would look like?

goodcolleges, you have a very good chance. You should be aware that, with your stats, you have a very good chance at nearly every school in the country.

mo8991, the average instate URM has stats well below UVA's average. The Washington Post quoted the average SAT score of blacks at UVA to be over 200 points below the average scores of whites and asians. I don't have any data on grades or rank, though. Anecdotally, though, I know of three black kids from my HS who got into UVA. One was in the top 10%, and the other two weren't.

thanx cavalier

I'd link you to the article and a blog discussing it, but it appears that the links are dead or the pages have been moved.

Goodcolleges, I know the feeling and anxiety of being worried all I say is that time is the healer of all wounds. Acceptance is the greatest feeling in the world. Rejection is obviously the worst feeling in the world. All I can say is have a back up plan and keep going because expect the unexpected.

That has a lot of interesting information on UVA, as far as affirmative action is concerned. UVA accepted more than 80% of black applicants with SAT scores over 1150 in 2003. I don't think it takes into account out-of-state/in-state, but you still might wanna take a look to get an idea.

thanx....i wish my parents settled down in VA....one state away...makes all the difference

This is old (i think from 1999) but go to page 11 and it has the race break down for instate vs out of state....the black out of state was lower than white instate in a lot of cases

wow that very interesting...it shows that OOS black applicants have a bteer chance that instate applicants but do you think that applies to now since this is from 1999

Admissions at UVA have changed very little since 1999. If anything, the proportion of african americans in each class has risen. Here's a study done using data from fall 2003 that discusses UVA admissions:

In particular, look at pages 3, 4, 7 and 8.

BTW, jaw, that was a nice find.

i feel not so worried anymore, but I have an interview with Ryan Hargraves on the 21st and he works with minority admissions in the admissions office and he might be able to answer some questions too
