OOS Friend with SAT 1700 says UCI is my safety after getting in

a number of people were accepted into UCI today with less than 1800 SAT scores. im one of the only few people (around 5 or so) with an SAT score above 1800. and when i say less than 1800 i am including ELC and non-ELC applicants.

1700 is not that bad of a score for UCI

come on…the 1850 average includes people who apply for backup

1700ish is the average for enrolling freshmen

yeah, and besides, the UC system places a LOT of emphasis on GPA. kinda sucks for me, but i guess that’s life. i’d say he has a decent chance at berkeley as well

Especially since they are almost 300 points under berkeley’s average.

…Are you sure he’s your FRIEND…?

^hmm… haha good question… i guess some things got inside my head~ i should be happy =)

Got in with a 2080 and like 3.5 UC GPA which is top 15% I think.

Oh well.

1700 SAT is fine at UCI seeing as a Princeton alum said that a 1900 would be fine to get you through college at Princeton. Stop making dumbass assumptions.

Youre a dumbass for saying that a person who gets a 1700 will pass any class at irvine.

guys, stop fighting and let the thread die.haha.

Youre a dumbass for saying that a person who gets a 1700 will pass any class at irvine.

Spell “you’re” correct before insulting someone ok? And I did not say 1700 will let you pass any class at UCI. Learn to read and spell.

Yeah i honestly do not understand how an SAT score will reflect the ability to pass or fail classes in Irvine. I mean honestly, its a ■■■■■■■■ conclusion. SATs have nothing to do with UCI classes.

SAT has little to do with intellectual capacity. However, this is absolutely no excuse for a sub-1800 score.

Why do people try to claim that there is no correlation between SAT score and college GPA? I think there is.

Universitywide information from statfinder:

[University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/statfinder/)

SAT of entering freshman in 2006 and their UC gpa after 1 year

600 - 1499/ 2.45
1500 - 1799/ 2.82
1800 - 2099/ 3.12
2100 - 2400/ 3.38
Unknown - Missing/ 2.78

You want to know why? Because they scored low on the SAT, and want to deny this fact. Although correlation does not equal causation, a 1700 on the SAT is way too low of a score to only be explained by lack of studying. Someone who is competent enough to do well at UCI or UCLA should be able to get at least an 1800 without studying. Anyone who says otherwise probably scored very, very low.

and based on that chart you just posted, this basically confirms what i have been saying. The law of diminishing returns starts to apply at about SAT 1800, meaning for those who score above 1800, there is little difference in their GPA’s. In fact, i think they should make this score a cut off for UCI.

That is the dumbest assumption I have ever heard. A 1700 SAT score = failing every class at Irvine? Are you kidding me? If the kid’s got a 4.2 GPA, he’s quite capable of handling college courses. The SATs are not always all that it’s made out to be. Some people are at a significant disadvantage with it, particularly writing and critical reading if English is their second-language. While this isn’t always a valid excuse, it is understandable. Everybody has their own strengths and weaknesses. I bet you suck at something, too. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll fail miserably at whatever it is you plan to do in life.

I don’t think you understand. A 1700 is beyond “sucking” at something. I got a 1900, which i consider a piece of sh1t score. But I didn’t study at all, so that was expected. But for someone to get a 1700, it takes more than just “not being good at tests”. And if they can’t speak english well, they do not belong at a major research university. Check this out again.

Hey dasher quit acting like some hotshot with your 1900 ok? Stop talking as if you have done tons of research on this(and if you have, my god kid, get a life). 1700 does not mean that a student will do badly in college. Some people are not good at test taking but do well in school(prime example: The guy who got into Stanford with a 1700 SAT last year. Not an athlete either). Quit making assumptions like this, you will sound MUCH smarter, trust me ok? :D

Hey, by the way I like how you ignored my response to your insult! I think we learned our lesson, yes? :)

Edit #2: Dash, you have contradicted yourself a few times on this thread. I’ll give you a cookie if you can find the flaw in your logic!!!

Friend got into cal with a 1700 sat and had a 3.0 first semester
