Opening Weekend Postponed due to Irene

Delaware has posted on their website that opening weekend is postponed until furhter notice. Students are not to arrive until further notice. This is not a joke.

I wonder when they will decide to start move-in…I’m sure they will have to assess damage first. At least DD has more time to organize and pack now.

Guess we just have to stay tuned…

Guess I’d better take my emergency preparedness a little more seriously.
My friend’s DD’s school is having move in a day early. They must have some plan for power outages/flooding etc. especially for the kids that are far from home.
I’d rather sit tight at home and wait to see what happens.

About half way in during move in for Freshman Fest, my D’s RA came in to announce all the above and that first day of classes on Tuesday had also been called off. She said that internationals and students from distant states would be staying but that the University “asked” that everyone else leave and return when contacted. One or two other students moving in said they wanted to stay and were permitted to.

We finished basic set up and may return to the room tomorrow for a short while or go shopping for a few things, but then we’ll be leaving early.

Freshman Fest is going on tonight (my D is there now) but the rest has been called off.

Wish we had some sort of “insider” information on what move-in scenarios the administration is considering. To be honest, if they end up not commencing classes until the Tuesday after Labor Day, I would not be thrilled at a full week of “free time” for the new freshman, should they move in early this coming week (call me a pessimist). Just wondering if they are looking at a full week shift of everything, or to get the students in as quickly as possible. I suppose they are waiting to see what, if any, damage there is to the school. This must be quite difficult for those who had planned to fly in over the weekend, who have no idea how to reschedule.

mhc: I was thinking about you when I heard the news, knowing that you are already down in Newark. At least the back-and-forth is do-able (albeit, not convenient).

I am hoping that everything is moving back a week - move-in next Sat/Sun would fit my schedule perfectly  Even though it’s my b-day, I would be happy to spend it with DD! She hasn’t even been home a week from her summer job and is fighting being sick, so some extra sleep will be good for her.

People I know here have a DD who is an upper classman at UD, living off campus. She drove down yesterday and will stay there. I hope to get a report from them about the conditions in Newark on Sunday (love FB for this), I guess depending on the power situation here and there.

Please post anything you hear! Thank you all and BE SAFE!

I moved my D in yesterday for freshman fest. She stayed for activities last night and today. I’ll be picking her up sometime later today. At first she wanted to stay but then decided to come home because of the threat of power outages. She told me that if everything is ok at school, she wants to go back by Tues. Seems she has already made some new friends.

Make sure you are signed up for the UD Emergency system. Both my D and I got calls yesterday and she also got a text with the decision/postponements. Several of her sorority sisters are locals so some of them are going to stay off campus with the others in their parents’ residences. Hopefully, our power and my Internet connection will function and cell phones will work. I’ll post if I get word out of Newark. UD does flood easily—hope your kids bought rain boots. Stay safe to everyone as well as those who have kids on campus.

The drive back from Newark to L.I. today (we left around 2 after some last minute shopping at Christiana Mall) was long and arduous due to all of the residents of the NJ shore evacuating. So when the storm passes, if you are considering driving down early to move in, be prepared for all of them to be returning to their homes,

My D signed up for emergency contact but we have not received any calls.

You should check the emergency notification info on UDSIS. My D got a call, then my cell, then my husband’s cell, then the house phone.

My family and I received no calls either; and I signed up my cell, my parents cells, and our home phone#'s. Double checked UDSIS several times and the info is there, don’t know why we haven’t received notifications.

I moved in to the University Graduate Apartments on Wednesday from California. Received an email from the ResLife staff saying that the building is expected to be safe, but that we needed to get supplies for feeding ourselves, and register with them that we were staying during the storm. It has started raining, and the wind is beginning to pick up. It may be a really long night. My favorite moment was when they told us to go home- can’t get a flight to CA that quickly! And my apartment-mate is from Ireland, so we are both stuck here.

We got the call at 5:30pm on Thursday, after we had finished moving my son in. He decided to stay in his dorm. At brunch today they had food for them to take for the weekend, so kids were packing up. We stayed in DE for a couple of days and drove home this morning.

Has there been any discussion of contingencies for move in from udel? It would be really helpful to hear something like “move in will be no earlier than x”. Having said that, I realize they won’t know what they are dealing with until Irene passes through. I’m supposed to be out of the country leaving Monday, and I won’t go if move-in is Friday or sooner.

I’m assuming they are waiting to see what happens when the storm passes thru before making any decision.

A quick review of U of MD, College Park, UMBC, and Rutgers shows that these schools simply advised students to move in before Irene hits Saturday night or wait until Monday. They do not seem concerned about having thousands of students in the dorms with no electricity.

Has anyone heard from their student who is still at UD if there was any damage? There’s a post on a facebook page that said Dickinson flooded… I sure hope not!

Spoke with my D last night, she is in Rodney and all was well. Of course that might have been before the brunt of the storm hit, but at that time there was nothing critical to report.

We got close to some flooding in Conover. At around 1am last night there was six inches of water surrounding the entire building. The fire department came and unblocked the storm drains. Now the water levels are back down. Scary for a little bit.
