Well I just got back from the first orientation session. It was great! Very big campus got lost twice, met some cool people, my OL (orientation leader) was crazy cool, pat yourself on the back if u get Montezzi the treal(true +real), i think his real name is Lamonte. The food was amazing, go out for the 7-day meal plan guys. First day seemed so long because some of the lectures, but the whole experience was awesome, especially the skits and Orientation live. Post your comments on orientation. Ill see if i can finish registering for my classes and then ill post my schedule up for this thread.

How were the placement exams?

I'm glad that it was such a great experience. Sounds like you had a lot of fun, can't wait for my orientation day! Was it real easy to meet new people, around what time did the orientation end on the second day? I'm probably gonna get lost so many times, I have no sense of direciton.

Josephmc- the placement exams were not bad. I did pretty well on the english part and I heard most people said it was easy, got placed in ENGL 1102 (theres UNIV-intro, Engl 1101, then 1102), my advisor says, if you qualify, its beneficial to take 1102M- multicultural authors, so youll get credit for your Muticulture req'd and your lit req'd, instead of jsut the lit req'd from 1102- traditional American authors. There are lots of classes that are like this 1-for-2-or-more thing; for ex, taking Hist 2112 for your social sciences hours will fill your ga and us constitution req'd. And ofcourse there are test that you can take to place out of classes like the ga const. test, chemistry, foreign language, etc. These tests are SatII style so you do get points off for guessing. But for the math and english u dont, its half grammar and half reading comprehension for the english. The math is mostly analysis/precalc material. For me, I havent had math since last year so it was really hard even tho Im Asian! haha jk, but so go review and study your math if you feel youre not a mathy person. I got 14 out of 26 and was place in Math 1113- precalc. If only I had my ti-83! Thus youll see that no calculators are allow. After the english, you go to lunch, then the math test ensues, then you can either go hang out and get your UGA card, or take a forein language or the chemistry test ($15 each). I took the Latin test and it was incredibly hard (mostly grammar), although I did manage to barely pass to the 2nd level at exactly 540 (it was the cutoff for the next level- 540-630 for the second level, and so I got 4 credits). Didnt hear anything bout the chemistry, but it is recommended that if you want to take both you should take the foreign language first, the come back later to clark howell univ. testing center for the chemistry.

Mooidness- it was easy at first to meet new people, but then later on people start to branch off into groups, so it was a lil harder then. On the 2nd day, it depends on when your day ends, I'd say btwn 1-5. Its ok to get lost, just becareful, somebody says 5 freshmen pedestrians got killed last year, so dont jaywalk hehe.

what is on the english exam?
and the math? any examples?

Like I said before I personally thought the English Test was easy, and the Math Test was fairly hard. If you took AP Lit, you should be fine, go review those grammar rules if you want to be absolutely comfortable going into the test. On the other hand, I took AP Calculus AB and got a 95, and I thought the Math test was somewhat arduous, maybe because I was rusty since I took the class first semester of senior year. So I would spend time studying grammar and your trig/analysis/calc mateials. Um examples?? Well the english grammar portion was basically formulated like those sentence error questions on the SATs, and the Math had questions mostly from precalculus, u no like unit circle, factoring, etc.

How was the forein language test? Was it all written or spoken. I have to take the Japanese test, so if anyone has already taken it can you tell me what to expect. How much Kanji do i have to know?

well I just got back and orientation was pretty cool...lol....I managed to schedule myself for NO 8AM's...and I stayed up until 2AM in the lobby talking to some cool people I met...oh yea I managed to get placed in the same math class as you (MATH1113-precal)...I swore up and down that I would be put into a UNIV class but I didn't...thank God...and I'm taking Portuguese :)

it did get VERY boring at times though...and the food was GREAT

ya, i just got back from orientation too, and i would have to say if was really fun... they Orientation leaders really help make it a little bit more interesting during those inevitable long discusses... Everybody was nice and open to talk to anybody... I only had to take the Math placement test so i can't tell how the english one was but the math was pretty simple if you know you trig. I got placed in Math 2200 (calculus) even though i didn't review at all since school let out...but to me taking the test was the easy part, the hard part is picking your classes and making sure that they felt well.

Bluthunder 06m it seems as if you are saying there is a lot of trig on the math placement test is that true? And is there anthing else I should study for or review if I really want to do well since math is my weakness?

yep...it's basically all trig/precal...if you've taken trig/precal class then just go over everything on this list

dude orientation is pimp as hell. haha for those of u who saw orientation live, i <3 the GA tech motto lolol

Im glad everyone thinks orientation was great.

So here are the classes Im taking:
ENGL 1102M
Math 1113 (3days)
PHIL 1500- Logic & Critical Thinking and/or LAT 2001
Chem 1211+ L
POLS 1101
Trying to get into honors program and make the Dean's List. I met two upperclassmen who said that most Honors classes are easier. Not that I think this is true (it could just be hearsay), but I have, in my personal experiences in HS, seen easier (less busy work, less notetaking, etc.) higher level classes.
Let me know what your thoughts are.
Go USA soccer team! (that ref. during the Italy game should be fired).

I'm taking

Math1113 (on MWF)
PSYC1101
Freshman Seminar (Southern Race Relations on Film)
Portuguese1001
CHEM1211 +lab

whose chem class are you taking Azadenizen? I'm taking Atwood for lecture and Stanton for lab...I've heard horrible things about both of them but I also heard Atwood writes all of the chem tests so I think I'll stick to him lol

I am worried about the math test because I didint even take calculus last year. I took discrete math then statistics 2nd semester. So hopefully I do well enough to stay out of the UNIV classes. If I get the Intensive 1113 course, I will not be mad because I need that course for my major and I do not want to struggle in it.

All UNIV courses are elective now. They can't force you to take them. SO as long as you can get a seat in the intensive MATH 1113 class, you're cool. (When's your orientation?--seats go fast.)

There's lots of free tutoring available too if you want it.

My orientation is July 24th.

umm babam...I'm gonna need for you to try and reschedule for an earlier date...lol

I didint think I could still reschedule. That was the earliest they had available when I got accepted.

bluthunder06, Im also taking Atwood and Stanton, and Im taking Whitehead for precalc.
