Any insight would be appreciated, though of course I am hoping that Dr John will respond! :)

Is it possible to minor in something (say, English or Journalism) while majoring in musical theatre -and would one be able to graduate in four years? How difficult would it be? Do students take private voice each semester?

The BFA in MT degree is packed. Essentially, it's a Theatre major, a Music minor, and a Dance minor rolled into one. So there really isn't room for additional minors.

It's easier for the Acting majors. Although we do include Voice and Dance in their degree plan, it's not as heavy. So Acting majors can complete a minor within four years.

All MTs take a one-hour private voice lesson weekly.

Is there a charge associated with the voice lessons? I'm doing research into other institutions' assets and how to best aim our public school toward the private model.

Hello! I know a lot of schools say to avoid auditioning with songs associated with a specific person and was wondering if all Judy Garland songs should be avoided during the MT audition-or is "Somewhere over the rainbow" the only off-limits-song?

Yes, there is a charge for voice lessons (and bassoon lessons, etc.) The fee next year for a one hour weekly lesson will be $585 each term, for a total of $1755. Figure $58.50 per lesson. It's covered by the Talent Grant which our MT majors receive. (The actual grants are considerably higher.)

Acting majors may take Voice Class which has no fee, or a half-hour lesson, which is $290 per term.

Everyone will have a different opinion, but I like hearing the songs that Judy Garland sang. There are too many good ones to put them all off-limits. Most people will tell you, however, that "Rainbow" is probably best avoided. That is, unless you can do it well enough to make us forget about Judy.

Congratulations LAactress47. My son had a very hard time in his decision and really liked Otterbein...the people are so nice and the talent is amazing!! You will be in great hands:).

Dr John
I have sent in a request for my D and I to visit Otterbein next Friday. We did indicate that she is interested in MT/dance and would like to visit with people in the department. DOes this get forwarded on to you all? We are hoping to see Peter Pan in the evening (I think it is still running next week end). Are there tickets still available?
thanks. and thoughts or suggestions would help. All of a sudden we are rather distracted and my organizational abilities have dropped though the floor.

Write to me directly and I'll make sure that we follow up on your visit request. Yes, PETER PAN will be playing next Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, and as of this moment, tickets are still available. But I'd like to get yours reserved quickly. I'll discuss details of your visit when you write.

Dr. John
Just wanted to publically thank you for the time you spent with my D and I yesterday. She loved Otterbein and the vareity of ways it may be possible to acheive her goals there. Peter Pan was wonderful, we really enjoyed the production and were very impressed with the high and consistent quailty. It was also fun to see the frechman presentations and how wonderfully supportive the students are of each other across the years.
D loved the Otterbein campus and size. She did feel like it could be a home for her. She was so happy that students who had been in the dance class with her in the morning said hello at lunch and stoped to talk. She left the tour highly motivated to maintain her academic standing and get out of HS well prepared.
Thanks to you, the students (particularly the lovely freshman acting major, dance minor who joined us for lunch and the admissions office.

Doctor John -
I read your long description of the audition process which you wrote in 2005. Anything different this year? How many MT students will you be taking for fall 2009?
Thnks!

I just read what I wrote three years ago. Most of it has not changed. The major change is that the time limit for MT auditions is now three (3) minutes instead of four. We ask for about one minute of a ballad, about one minute of an up-tempo and about one minute of a monologue, the total not to exceed three minutes. We were getting lots of questions about whether 17 bars of a ballad was acceptable. It's just easier to say "about a minute" and let applicants decide which pieces need to be longer or shorter.

Some other changes: This year we will be doing the on-campus auditions in the Campus Center dance studio instead of Riley Auditorium. We discovered last year that it's a better space. Because of demand, the unified audition appointments will be 15 minutes rather than 20. Debbie Byrne has moved to the Cincinnati area and although she is still working for us (thank you!), she has been replaced in the Admissions Office by Teri Devlin, who is equally wonderful.

Other than that, the process is the same, and we plan on admitting 8 in Musical Theatre and 8 in Acting, as we have for several years.
