Out of State Students still wait . . .

C'mon., how long does it take the administration to either accept or reject you? Just like a lot of other students, we applied early. Other schools tell you by February, but what in the world is taking Texas so long? Yes or no? I don't want to hear that bogus excuse that they are waiting to see if the in-state students commit, blah, blah, blah, it's not rocket science.

Texas has a single decision date: April 1. If you apply earlier, you MAY hear back earlier, but THEY DO NOT HAVE TO TELL YOU until April 1. They don't care when you apply, you don't get special consideration. Some applicants may hear back early if they are admitted to honors, are top ten, or are otherwise certain of admission. Texas has something in the neighborhood of 20,000 applicants each year. I believe they may have the largest applicant pool in the country.

Texas has a state law requiring that ALL graduates of a Texas high school in the top ten percent of their class be admitted, and this will take up about 80% of the space in the class

The are limited by the state in the number of OOS students they can take

The entire admission system is based on comparing students to one another on a graph, OOS and in-state together.

If they can tell automatically that you would be in a part of the graph that would be accepted in all circumstances, you will receive an early letter. Otherwise, you have to wait until they compare you against everyone.

It isn't a bogus excuse, it is a law. Maybe you should do some research to pass the time and stop being so impatient!

Hey, don't feel bad, there are alot of non top 10% Texans who haven't heard yet too! They'll hear the same time you do...

Texas has a single decision date

I'm not convinced this is true. I applied on December 26 and I got a decsion last week. I am oos. Accepted into McCombs.

^try reading his second sentence.

It varies for OOS. I had one child get an acceptance the first week of January (not honors program) and the other did not hear until mid March. Both applied by Dec 31st.

Yeah I applied December 1st and I just found out last Friday, so it took them about 3 months.

thanks for mentioning that spartans61,
haha, I was beginning to think that maybe UT sends acceptances during Feb. and all the rejections during March.

Call me dumb, but theloneranger statement that "It isn't a bogus excuse, it is a law", just doesn't make sense. Comments:

Texas has a single decision date - if that were true, then others, regardless of whether honors, in-state or OSS, would not have heard by now (see spartans61's post "I had one child get an acceptance the first week of January (not honors program) and the other did not hear until mid March. Both applied by Dec 31st");

Texas has a state law requiring that ALL graduates of a Texas high school in the top ten percent of their class be admitted, and this will take up about 80% of the space in the class - OK, by now Texas knows who the top 10% is, admit them and then go onto what is left for the OSS and other in-staters who aren't in the top 10%. What is so hard about that - Yes or no;

"Maybe you should do some research" - I am researching. I am researching how long it takes for an easy decision to be extended for a few months while students wait for no apparant reason.

I repeat, not rocket science.

Why the anger and vitriol?

What he wrote is correct. When he said they have a single date - April 1st. He meant that ALL decisions will be made by that date, that is the final date... Many hear before, many don't hear until then. That's just the way it is.

Regarding the 10% issue, many top 10%ers don't apply until the deadline because they know they get in regardless; consequently, UT has a HUGE backlog of applications to wade through at this time, so they are still evaluating each app.

I know that you are impatient, but you are not the only one. Case in point - Three years ago, my oldest, who was not top 10%, but was a NMF with a 1520 (800 verbal) SAT, did not hear from Texas until April. He had already been accepted at EVERY other college he had applied, and had been offered substantial scholarships at each. He was so furious at UT that he couldn't see straight. By the time he finally got in, he basically told them to shove it, and accepted the full ride to UF, where he has been blissfully happy for the last 3 years.

You are not alone in your frustration - But you have to be patient. If the frustration gets the best of you, then blow UT off and go somewhere else that you have been accepted. Simple solution. Being angry and upset is not going to make the decision come any faster. :)

I'm an OOS applicant and I got into the McCombs School.

Actually, I just received a likely email today which was really exciting but I wasn't completely sure if I got in yet so I logged in and checked my application status and I was accepted! So yeah, haven't received official letter yet but decisions are online and a nice likely email too :)

Major Congrats to you hotasice! You must be quite a student!!

To ag54: as the great Victorian Novelist George Elliot (a/k/a Mary Ann (Marian) Evans) once said, "“It is easy finding reasons why other folks should be patient”. Me, I want to know now if I am accepted.

Wasn't the deadline Feb. 1st? That's 3 weeks ago. Other than the really top tier students, I would think they'd need to compare all the applicants. Now that all the apps are in, they can compare.

For what it's worth, S is in-state and still no decision.

ag54, do you mean April 1st, or do you mean later than that? If it goes later than that we will all surely die. ;-)

No, if I remember correctly, his status changed on, or right before, April 1.

Mario, I know how hard it is to be patient, trust me. By the way, great quote!

Good luck to all of you (and your kids). The waiting game is the worst part, but your apps are in, and what will be will be. I would have never thought my oldest would end up at UF, but there he is, and it has been a great place for him. My second is at UT - top 10%, so no drama. But, gosh, I remember with #1 son the agony of the wait!!!

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure I sent in my application right up until the absolute deadline February 1st. Not sure, either Feb. 1st or a couple days leading up to that and just got notified of my likely acceptance today--so about 2.5 weeks afterwards. I was a little surprised, I didn't know UT would respond that quickly. :)

For those of you still waiting, hang in there!! I'm still waiting impatiently from my other schools that will notify me in April. Going 2 for 2 right now, but still waiting to hear from 10 schools.

A little nerve-wracking, yes. It just might make or break my entire spring break.

this is some scary stuff
i'm waiting on texas and i think i really want to go there. How long do you think it'll take, considering I applied in December and I am out of state (from Maryland)

actualy I applied in November, but does anyone have any clue?

I guess it just varies, because I applied at the end of December and I heard back last week. I suppose that means that you should be hearing back soon as well...
