PA Governor's School 2009

All done, sent it in today and am gonna start praying. :)

is the competition gonna be tough for international students applying to Global Entrepreneurship?

international students?
you mean like minority group? cuz you can only apply if you live in PA

^Yea, only PA residents. However, if your parents are US military and live in PA but you are stationed abroad I think you can apply. I think.

i would imagine it would be equal to anybody else.
my guess is they place your PA address in the same IU region and still compare you against your IU competition.

hey future govies,
Gov. Rendell is proposing cutting funding for the Pennsylvania Governor's Schools of Excellence due to the budget. Right now, former Governor school students are doing everything we can to keep these amazing programs in place for the future. I assume PGSE 2009 will still occur, this has been a really recent development and apparently, the changes in the budget could be passed as early as Wednesday. I wanted to keep you all posted. We're not sure what's going on exactly.

Here's the article: http://www.altoonamirror.com/page/content.det ail/id/515622.html.

thanks,
Amy (School of the Arts '08)

I never did like Rendell. Anyway, my app is due Feb. 5th and I'm wrapping up the essays right now.

Governor Rendell is making a huge mistake. Instead of cutting the budget for Gov School, the state's leading summer program for high-achieving students and biggest chance to develop talent, he should think about downsizing the lower-end of the education scale. Special education kids get so much more state funding than gifted students do, even though investing in gifted students yields greater rewards and has more potential to help society. Focus on no child left behind has left the smart and hard-working out to dry. It may sound heartless, but then again straight economics is a dismal science.

He is going to cut PGSE and DARE? Wow. I'm sure there are far less important programs that could be cut. Instead the top level kids will be without this great opportunity, and the young'ns will have no clue what the little blue tablets with tweety bird are...
PGSE 2009 should still go on, because budget changes will likely be for the next fiscal year--October.
Still, thats absurd. Why doesn't Rendell ditch Eagles Post-Game coverage and find better solutions to the state's problems?

PLEASE WRITE TO GOVERNOR RENDELL AND TELL HIM TO NOT CUT THE PROGRAMS!

I'm an arts govie from 07, so if you have any questions, feel free to PM me. However, we have to make sure that he'll fund the programs this year...

Straight from Ed Effing Rendell's Budget proposal:

[quote]

The FY2009-2010 budget cuts or eliminates funding across 89% of the line items in the budget. Specifically, I propose to cut $395 million in spending by completely eliminating 20 percent of the 500 line items under the control of the Executive Branch. As I said, in some cases we are cutting terrific programs that we can perhaps restore when the economy recovers, but we just cannot afford them today. One such example is one of my favorite programs, the Governor's Schools of Excellence, a terrific week-long series of academic enrichment forums offered by the Department of Education to students from all over Pennsylvania. Great, great program, but we simply cannot afford to fund it this summer.

Looks pretty bad. This was released today. I love his ignorance: "week-long." Aren't they all five weeks? It's a pretty significant mistake considering that they're one of his favorite programs...

Does anyone know if it is in his power to cut funding for the summer 2009 schools?

I can't imagine them cutting the budget so close to the program, but Rendell's press release says "this summer," so it looks like if he can shut them down this year, he will.

how do you guys think the selection committee will handle it, like if he decides to cut the summer 2009 program? do u think they'll send a letter or something to all applicants?

this is soo stupid, the state is just going to end up shooting itself in the foot...

jsun. amen to a fellow elitist!
Rendell doesnt seem to get that cutting such vital programs will really really hurt the state- frivolous spending could be cut elsewhere. Robbing from the minds of children is not a good call. DARE may have been annoying and all but i think some kinds really need it, like they wouldn't know to "say no" without it being drilled into their head. And taking away even more opportunities from the gifted students is not cool, did i mention that no child left behind is dysfunctional... ahhh!! its not closing the gap when you drag down the upper levels....

sorry- strong opinions...

Thanks for the link CrystalPineapple ... I just emailed my two cents for saving the program.

My daughter is applying to the PGSE program for this summer and we also emailed our local representatives.

There's a facebook growing in opposition to cutting the PGSE programs here:

It's been getting some press and is a good location for information.
