PA Governor's School 2009

it would, indeed, be in his power as the governor...though he still must get the bill passed by state level house and such.
For those who applied this year, I think we are safe, but this could be the last year. As the quote said, the cuts would be for the 09-10 fiscal year--which means gov school 2010 would be the first one cut--as October 2009 start's that year.
This is such a shame--i'm sure many other less beneficial programs could be cut than this.

What gets me is that i've read articles where those in support of the cut say that they need programs to benefit "a broader range of students" when there are three times as many learning support programs than there are ones for high achievers. To reach a broader range, shouldn't we cut BOTH those programs at the top and the bottom? Basically, this is BS

Wouldn't a program that benefits a broader range of students be bigger, and therefore MORE expensive? And why not have a program for top students? If Rendell really wants to make PA competitive like he says he does, he needs to make sure that the people with the most potential are given the tools to realize it. Far too often, these tools are determined by money and school circumstance. This is what makes governor's school so great, it is not determined by either of these things. I think this whole thing boils down to NCLB. The kids can already crush the standards, why improve them at all? Makes me sick, makes all my teachers sick. By the way, people talking about cuts to special needs I don't think are looking at it the right way. Like I've said, I love the idea of the program. But it prepares students for greater success, not simply living a productive life as most special needs programs do. I think what we should cut is programs that try to bring disabled kids up to NCLB standards. What is the point, these kids are not going to go on the college (the vast majority anyway). They should focus on preparing them for LIFE after graduation, not on having them meet "averages" for high school graduation that are impractical to them.

Did I mention how much I hate No Child Left Behind? I have yet to meet a teacher or a student who likes it. The only person I have ever heard defend it (in-person) was an aide to someone. I'm saying she was stupid, but this is a sample conversation:

(Pat sitting there reading The Davinci Code)
Her: That book is full of lies, white lies!
Pat: Well, it is fiction...

So yea. /rant

You know, if they took 1.2% of the 300 million dollar education tax relief proposed in the budget, they could fund governor's school.

Or a tiny fraction of the 550 million increase in tuition relief. Cutting a program as small as governor's school is just for show, it has no real effect on the budget (it is .0012% of the budget).

I'm just hoping for some miracle that will allow this to happen this summer; I handed in my applications already! ah!

Goddamnit. I just got an email that PGSE has officially been canceled for this summer.

I can't believe it. All that hard work for nothing. I didn't even apply to any other programs...now I might be wasting my summer doing nothing.

^^ Ditto

this sucks.

Are the PGSE programs really cancelled? I have not heard of anything besides what has been written in this thread. If someone could produce any form of official documentation, that would be incredibly helpful. I will be truly furious if they cancel the programs this summer!

^Someone posted the email I was referring to in the Governor's School Canceled thread.
