I will ask about the hyperbaric chamber treatments.
@mominva, thanks for the CDC suggestion. It’s Candida auris. Kind of scary - a new strain that’s known to be drug-resistant. It says the patient’s room is to be meticulously cleaned each day with a special disinfetant. The CDC is also supposed to be notified for guidance. I’m going to see if that’s been done. I doubt it.
@MaineLonghorn what a shock. And you heard the infection was not in the bones, then pus near the lungs, then infection in the bones, all in such a short time.
Did they discuss taking him off his leukemia meds?
I can’t imagine having to tell your father and your mother. I wonder if you could talk to hospice first. They could help with that or advise you-?
I agree about hospice, but I think if I mention that concept now my sister will freak out. The doctor is supposed to tell them today. Still waiting to hear.
So sorry about this. I went through this with both parents as the out of state person with only a sister who was local to my parents. It can be overwhelming and confusing. Do you have any possibility to get there in person to help figure this out ?
Hospice doesn’t mean imminent death. Does your sister know that? My mother and so many others I know have been on and off for years. They are just so helpful in knowing how to handle things.
@MaineLonghorn so sorry to hear about your dad. I do hope they are mistaken or that there will be a successful treatment. It’s so scary to realize how little control we can have when loved ones are hospitalized
My mom’s at home now and Medicare will pay for some PT and nurses to help for showers but that will end. Looking at this company to help with showers kind of thing. She’s 90, lives at home and my sister is a few blocks away but getting her in and out of the bath after hip replacement might be to much for my sister to do.
@Knowsstuff I used Right At Home briefly. Imho there are several agencies of this type and many are franchises. So it really matters how the local office is run. Even if I had a fabulous experience, you might have a terrible one with a different owner/manager.
I also used a non franchise single owner agency that I loved. In both cases the key was an owner who was compassionate and available.
@surfcity. I appreciate the information. We don’t need the help yet and will look into this further and other agencies. I noticed after they are franchises so know what you mean. Thx
@Knowsstuff We used Right at Home before my mom went into her MC. The office in our town in OH was super. The one near my parents in FL, horrible. Totally depends on the management and staffing.
Don’t be afraid to interview multiple agencies. Your local department on aging may be a good resource as well.
@Knowsstuff@momofsenior1 has a good point about interviewing agencies. I did that over the phone. A bigger piece of advice is the two places I interviewed were recommended by my parents ALF. So those staffers had seen the agencies people daily as they worked for other residents.
Also the hospital social worker recommended some agencies but her recs may not be as helpful if she doesn’t see the actual care given or if she recommends because she gets a lot of attention from a sales person etc.
Right now she has someone that comes through the hospitals out patient program that Medicare with BC secondary pays for. She might not need anyone later but this is all great information…
My dad had physical therapy ordered by his physician. When the Medicare authorized visits ran out, we kept the same physical therapist and we pay her directly. Possibly you can pay the people who are coming now directly, if you like them and want to continue.
